IT gets only a 6/10 here.

IT is fun, tense, well-acted, and imaginative. Go see the show. However, IT is the best horror film of the year--for non-horror fans.

This pretty good offering benefits from a great trailer, September dead zone at the cineplex, and certain hype (possibly, from general audiences). Often, the character development is engaging and admirable too.

IT suffers from some bad CGI overly used throughout the movie. I am not bothered by CGI use in and of itself, but these effects are cheesy and distracting.

IT also suffers from playing it too safe. Often, good art is not safe. Much memorable horror is not safe. This 2017 release dances all around the ugliness of racism instead of bluntly presenting past ugliness for what it was. Seemingly, this product does not want to challenge or offend general audiences. Also, director Andy Muschietti hesitates to explore the exploitation of children. And, that discretion can be a good thing. However, in IT, this redaction means that some of the story does not even make sense. At least acknowledge some of these icky things in dialogue. Perhaps, original adapter Cary Fukumaga intended to tackle tough material in his planned NC-17 version. Muschietti could have shown off his skill and guts in this movie. But, he does not, whether presenting gore that could shock or adult themes that could make audiences feel uncomfortable. Other memorable horror dares to disturb its audience such as The Exorcist, The Fly-1986, Misery, Pet Sematary, I Spit on Your Grave, The Woman, or Re-Animator. King's book went "there"; perhaps, Muschietti's movie should have dared horrify as well.

IT has a few cliches contaminating some otherwise highly imaginative text. So, those cliched moments harm the film a little.

Be sure to read other reviews about IT that laud the film more than my review has. This movie does deserve praise and patronage. I simply cannot say that IT-2017 reaches its potential, and I cannot say that it is the best horror flick of 2017 for those who know and love their horror.

I enjoyed the film quite a bit . Is it the year's best horror ? not even close . A coming of age tale with some horror themes sprinkled throughout . A well told tale , but not a terrifying one . I AM looking forward to what they can bring to the table in the adult section though .
