The Thing (2011)
This movie is kick-ass, guys. It meshes perfectly with John Carpenter's movie. It is very similar, yet at the same time, so very different. Trust me when I tell you. I am as big a fan of JC's film as anybody on this site. It's a part of my childhood and my adult life. I went into this film with very high expectations, and came away feeling satisfied. I loved it. Forget what you have read about the horrid CGI. It's very good. And the effects overall are excellent. The Thing has an even darker and more claustrophobic feel to it than JC's movie. There are some similar scenes to the first film. The blood syrum test is in there. But a new and novel approach has been taken with it. Very cool.
The cast is bigger as well. Mary Elizabeth Winstead was surprisingly good in the lead role. She is very sexy. And I can't help but draw parrallels to Macready, She takes control of the team. It's a responsibility she doesn't want, or need. And like Ripley many years earlier, she handles the situation like a real heroine. But she doesn't do it for glory etc. She has to deal with it or else they will all die. More emphasis is placed upon the thing actually trying to escape antarctica in this movie. And at times its difficult to know who is really who. Who goes there? Hahaha. I also loved the fact that many of the team were actual Norwegians. This adds greatly to the feel and tone, and flavor of the film tying in with the 1982 version. Crazy Swedes! They're Norwegian, Mac. Lol. Infact, a few lines were exactly the same. This was handled well. And wasn't over-done. "Antarctica Winter 1982" We see those immortal words again. Very cool.
This new movie not only ties in perfectly with the JC 1982 movie. But it also manages to deliver some pretty decent shocking scenes. Rob Bottin would be proud? Perhaps. But not for one second do I dismiss his work in the original. It still stands as a monument of cult sci-fi horror classic films in my books. This new movie compliments it. It embraces it I think. One thing here. make sure you stay for the credits. If you don't you will be robbing yourself of some very cool closing footage. Not after the credits. But during them. The Thing fans will love this. I know I did. And it was very haunting. Not to mention I got chills from it. If they make a sequel. Which would in turn be a remake of JC's movie. I would go and see it if it is handled like this film was. But for me the original is the best. Um, the 1982 version that is.
Please, if you have doubts. Just go and see it. It is great fun. I was highly skeptical. But in the end I gave in and went to see it. The trailers helped alot in my decision. Apart from a couple of niggly bits which for me don't seem to match up, I have no problem with the 2011 movie The Thing. I am going to see it again next week. Oh, and one thing among many that I did notice, is that Mary gives us a nice black thong slip shot earlier on in the film. Don't the editors see this stuff? Oh, and it was great to have some females in the movie. For me this is one of the better horror movies that has been released in the last few years. I am so glad that they delayed it's release to fix up some issues with the production overall. Man and now woman is the warmest place to hide...still
I am going to give this film a solid 8/10
Original The Thing rating - 9/10
