Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a groundbreaking film. It manages to entertain all audiences and does so in a new, exciting and innovating way.
The best way I can describe the film is a mashup of LA Confidential and Pulp Fiction. It takes a lot of cues from detective stories of old, giving us an old school mystery with crazy occurrences and wild twists. But that is not a hindrance to how this film tells its story. If anything, the film takes the limitations and tries to bend them, steering viewers towards its conclusion in a subtle and fun way. The narration by Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) is something we've never seen in a movie before, with hints of it in films like Fight Club and The Emperor's New Groove. This film does so many new things that it is hard to pick one that really works. They all work perfectly.
The dialogue is brilliant, the characters are fun, the mystery keeps you guessing, there's almost nothing to complain about. It's a great ride from beginning to end. You'll love it.
