The Roommate is the latest Screen Gems Rip-Off to come out in recent memory last one being i believe "The Stepfather" (which i somewhat enjoyed) The Roommate is yet another dull PG13 film watered down with bad talent and performances that a 5 year old could accomplish. The whole film is a bunch of clueless college students un-aware of the events happening around them. Some of the material proves to be good and could have made for a decent flick , but instead we get these actors we have never heard of (With some mere exceptions). My Expectations of the film were not that high and by the end of film i was not disappointed with the overall product. A Campy un-original predictable mess. The Roommate is to complex for itself for godsake - you just want to slap the main protagonist mainly because of her personality. The other main problem is the Roommate herself its so tragic the person they casted as her because i swear she should be up for a Razzie this year , partially because you can't stand her , and other she is just a total Bitch. Which i guess would be ok because thats what there going for. For the films main target line (cuz its PG13 rating) Which will be Teens and early College students its not worth it even for them .. including myself (IM 17) and i hated this film just as much as a 15 year old film , but there will be those people that will think this movie is the scariest film they have ever seen?. I beg to differ.
A Now College Freshmen Sara (the very gorgeous but dumb Minka Kelly) is now finally going off to college and when she was young had to deal with the death of her sister (Emily) which we never get to know more about her?. But she has never really had a roommate and is really stoked to have one. After staying out late the first night she returns home to see her Roommate Rebecca sitting there waiting for her. They meet and instantly connect with one another and become best friends. They pretty much have been doing everything together but when the boundaries of friendship and Crazy are being pushed Sara begins to investigate and do some digging to find out a dark and deep secret past , which will push Rebecca to reach the edge and finally full-fill what she has done in the best .. with the help of Sara's new Boyfriend Stephen can they stop the madness?!
The Story here i guess is based on another film? which i have never heard of in my life so i cant comment on that , but the source material which is a roommate going insane and trying to almost murder the previous roommate. Thats pretty interesting and will grab most people's attention and will drag audiences to the theaters to see it. But the acting and the star power come nothing close to what the films is trying to accomplish which is trying to thrill you can scare you .. which can't be done probably because its highly restricted to its PG13 so no little kiddies have to sneak in just to get a glimpse at what is already nothing to begin with. The Directing is from a unknown director i have never heard of anyway?. The Shots are the college are nice for the visuals and some of the final scenes moments are pretty shocking and intense but other than that this film is nothing to brag about .. to your friends or anybody for that matter. But parents tho its PG13 it does at points push those lines a couple times.
Overall: Tho The Grimace and premise make for an interesting story and minor "jumps & creeps" here and there. But With the lack of good performances and a predictable final scene Roommate proves to be one thing ... dumb , idiotic and extremely unsatisfying. That pretty much sums it up i can't believe all the money and time that went into this movie , and the thing is if this film makes money there will be a direct to dvd sequel. Its stupid how many lame films they can fit into one year. I mean we had Stepfather and Roommate now whats next? The Stepbrother or The Mother all pointless and will never attempt anything other than minor chills and creeps which for the money Americans are paying to go to the movies nowadays we deserve better and this is just not it. Sure for the time being this film will be talked about or YES! go see this movie but thats about it. Next Year comes along there will be another film just like this and will be just as interesting as this one and pointless this films come a dime a dozen and i must say the material is good but everything else is worthy of 2 stars which is what i am giving the roommate.
