I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien

District 9

This movie is now pretty cold if you think of what’s new and what’s hot but it still needs more minutes in the spotlight. The 15 minutes of fame will just not do for District 9.

When I went over to London to visit a friend they had a great marketing campaign for this movie. All phone booths were covered in warning signs that read “Only for humans”, magazines had similar covers and it looked really cool. Here, in Sweden, almost no one has heard of District 9 and then most who’s actually heard of the name District 9 thinks it’s a cream for STD’s.

Why I can’t speak highly enough about District 9 is because it really kicks some major alien ass when it comes to story and structure in a genre that really needs new air in both. For one, aliens in District 9 are here because they’re not allowed to leave! Great angle for an alien flick. The whole story is fresh because what they do is that they don’t treat is as an alien movie. It builds like a documentary that starts to turn more and more and almost end in complete action and Bruce Willis saving the world. Well, not the last part but it’s got some really great action.

I’m a strong believer in not spoiling movies. The less you know about a film the better it gets (yeah, fuck you trailers that show too much) and because of that I don’t want to get more into the story of District 9. However I want to point out that it is a great story and the depths that the main character, played by Sharlto Copley, goes to are just amazing.

The special effects are in some parts some of the best out there so far and I really can’t believe this was made for “only” 30 million dollars. I mean, that’s Tom Cruise’s salary!

Easily one of the years best movies but don’t trust me, or the 8,4 grade is has on IMDB. Just watch it and if you don’t like it just go back to whatever planet you came from!
