The Final Destination is mediocre, at best. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to see it the way it is intended to be seen, in 3-D, however I got the distinct impression that I wasn't missing out on much. Perhaps it would have enhanced the viewing pleasure the littlest bit, but I believe with the poor acting and downright lack of plot, the 3-D wouldn't have made a difference anyway.
With each new chapter in the Final Destination films, they have seemed to lack more and more. Each film has been slightly lesser than the previous one. I understand that this film was a last-ditch effort to pump some life back into this franchise, but, for me at least, it didn't. Placing a bunch of no-name actors in a situation I've seen three times before is hardly original or exciting.
Basically this franchise depends upon its ability to develop new and original ideas of ways to make people die. And don't get me wrong, they do. But at some point you have to realize that you are watching (almost) the same film you've seen three times before.
I think the original Final Destination was groundbreaking for what it was. I even see the second as a strong sequel and worthy addition to the franchise. Hell, I even found the third film to be somewhat enjoyable, at points, but watching this fourth film made me realize that a second, third and especially fourth installment was never even necessary to begin with.
I am giving this film a rating of 4/10 for some fairly decent and gory death sequences (which have become standard in a film such as this) and that is about it. The storyline is poor and the acting is even worse, but if you have 82 minutes of your life to waste you might want to check this one out.
So, was it really "The Final Destination"? Or did taking the opening slot in the box-office this weekend over Rob Zombie's Halloween II (which was far better than this film in my opinion) open the eyes of greedy studio execs who are ready to green-light a sequel? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
