Times Have Changed
(This is something that has been getting on my nerves lately, maybe it's been bugging you too.)
For the past few years, it has been one of my goals to go to school for Film Study. Except, unlike a few of my upper class, money to throw around having friends, I have been stuck here. Stuck in a shitty town in what I call "A purgatory of working to get out of debt so maybe one day I can get out of this shit town and actually achieve some of my life goals." I'm not really complaining about that, though, 'cause at least I have the internet, where I can write and talk to like-minded movie fans. No, this is a rant about a few of my friends who I can no longer stand watching movies with. Friends that have gotten so picky about shit in movies after taking film study classes that they bitch about all movies made after the French New Wave movement.
I don't know if this is just the way film study classes are taught around here, which is entirely possible, since I live on the outskirts of Boulder, CO, where people are often rich, uppity, bitches. Either way, I am getting sick of hearing statements like, "Oh, I like the angle they used here," or "this transition could have been a lot better if they used..." Shit like that, coming from kids with zero experience in film making, and only a couple community college film study classes. Now, I am not disagreeing with their statements, it's usually the cunty, holier-than-thou tone they use when they say it. I talk to, and am friends with a lot of real film critics, people who actually get paid (or try to get paid) for their opinions on movies, and they rarely ever say shit like that.
Look, I like French New Wave movies, I have spent a lot of time making my way through the Criterion Collection. However, we don't live in those times, and technology has changed. It's changed a lot. There aren't a lot of film makers creating artsy films on that level anymore. In 99.9% of cases, it's totally pointless to even compare current mainstream movies with the films of Italian Neorealism, French New Wave movement, or even Classic Hollywood.
Shit. I got pretty sidetracked, and forgot where I was going with this rant. How about you people (And I mean that in the most racist of ways), do you know people like this?! Or is it just a couple of my friends have become cunty, artsy fools?
(Don't read this wrong, I am not talking shit about art house or foreign films. I watch them all the time!)
AngryHaving been an art major i can tell you that professors will try to feed you their way of thinking and anything else is amateur or idiotic. They try to make you feel less for having a opposing opinion. My brother and I always talk about how school kills creativity and promotes conformity. How the best artist do it for themselves, no need of outside help. Although have influence.
It all depends on the student though. If you go to school just to sound cool, to have knowledge as an intellectual conversation piece. Then you most likely end up talking like an artsy fool. But if you go in with a grain of salt, knowing half the shit they say is just that shit, you'll be able to get an understanding of the ideas and appreciate them without being brain washed.
Maybe this is the reason why Paul Thomas Anderson left NYU so quickly lol.

Do we live in the same place? lol
It's a stereotypical thing. The films are good, but people think that by citing them as the second coming, that they look good or better.
You know the truth. Lots of the kids in film school are pretentious little bitches who don't care for the opinion of the average.
