Reasons why Theoden is my favourite LOTR film character:

1. His voice - Clear, commanding and inspiring. I wanted to charge into battle with him.
2. Grace under pressure - "When last I looked, Théoden, not Aragorn, was king of Rohan." While Aragorn was a key focal point, if you think about it, he was not king of anything yet so if he failed, while all would be lost, he would just fade into obscurity. Meanwhile, Theoden had his forefathers to live up to and his people to inspire...and inspire he did.
3. The beard - Seriously, have you ever seen such a perfectly coiffed and full goatee. It should have been a character onto itself.
4. His armour - Purely my opinion but it was totally boss. Haldir's battle elves were a close second.
5. His dialogue - 'So much death. What can men do against such reckless hate?' I separate this from his actual voice/ability to deliver. His lines/monologues/speeches were IMO the most moving of the films.

Some good points. Especially the beard, in a world full of facial hair his was some of the most kingly.

Bond facts:

1. Although popularly associated with the Aston Martin, Bond's personal car is actually a modified Bentley Continental.
2. Although the first movie, Dr. No is actually the 6th book.
3. The primary nemesis for Bond in the early novels is actually SMERSH (the Russians) and not SPECTRE.
4. Goldeneye is the name of Ian Fleming's Jamaican estate.
5. The novel The Spy Who Loved Me is the only one written from someone else's perspective and Bond does not appear until about halfway through the book.
6. Bond kills Bloefeld in the novel You Only Live Twice.
7. In the novel Casino Royale, it is Baccarat that Bond plays versus Le Chiffre not Texas Hold'em poker. It is also what Bond is playing when we first see him in Dr No although it is referred to as Chemin de Fer which is an early version of Baccarat.
8. "The World is not Enough" is the Bond family motto as stated on its coat of arms. This is revealed in the novel On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
9. In the novels, Bond is forced to switch to the Walther from his trusted Baretta because of the closing incident at the end of the 5th book, From Russia with Love, where he almost dies.
10. One of my life goals is to properly mix and then consume a Vesper.

Random thoughts on a lazy Sunday:

1. I really don't want a Batman reboot for at least 10 years.
2. IMO, the Punisher as a character has no redeeming value.
3. The Avengers is a great example of a comic movie not having to be Nolan-esque to be fantastic
4. The 70s is one of my favourite movie eras.
5. I am doing my first triathlon and I totally want to put a bat symbol on my wetsuit.
6. The Man of Steel teaser has me intrigued. I love being intrigued.
7. While I love and have read LOTR several times, I didn't really like The Hobbit when I read it.
8. I need some new books to read.
9. I love that my 8 year old has discovered the 60s Batman TV episodes on Youtube.
10. I am very excited about Skyfall.
Fabster
Fabster at 02:24 PM Jul 22

@JohnL...I have this cool small framed watercolour picture that shows Superman as a small figure flying alone in the sky. The quick scene of him flying in the teaser reminded me of that picture and the lonliness/isolation it implies.

Nite Owl
Nite Owl at 02:34 PM Jul 22

As far as the comics go I guess it just depends on whose writing the character. The common misconception on the character is that he's a heroic figure, but if written right he should come across as someone whose kind of unsettling like a Travis Bickle or a John Rambo. Rambo from FIRST BLOOD, not the sequels where he pretty much just became an action hero.

A spoiler free list of what I enjoyed about The Avengers:

Img00116-20120421-1536
1. The pacing - There were no flat moments for me. It was a non-stop ride.
2. The Shield agents were not cannon fodder. I liked that Hill, Coulson and Fury are portrayed as skilled soldiers as opposed to second fiddle fodder beside the heroes.
3. The balance -each of our favourites got a chance to shine. A difficult thing to accomplish.
4. The power of Thor - the one thing that I did not like about the individual Thor film was that I did not feel that you got enough of a sense for how strong/powerful he was independent of his hammer. This is rectified.
5. Similarly for the Hulk - the power level we have been accustomed to in the comics was clearly showcased
6. Cast chemistry - you can see it both on and off camera. It reminded me of what you saw similarly with the Ocean's 11 films.
7. The peril - I liked that the peril was not white-washed. You really got the sense that they needed to overcome something significant.
8. Made for all - I love Batman and particularly I loved The Dark Knight but it took a while before I would let my kids watch it. I loved that the three of us could enjoy The Avengers equally.
9. Black Widow - honestly, I think the movie did a better job of highlighting the importance of the Black Widow better than I have seen in the actual comic books.
10. ...ok, that's all I have...other than how cool are the Avengers LEGO toys??!!??

Current comic book musings, 2nd edition:

1. I love Batman, but he has too many titles.
2. I was skeptical at first but I am really liking Wolverine & the X-Men.
3. Dear Marvel, please stop splitting up Kitty and Colossus. For crying out loud give them a chance!
4. I have never liked the concept of a Robin and Damien Wayne especially. He is supposed to be 10. My son is 10 and you can train him all you want, he is not kicking anyone's ass.
5. The New Avengers has been consistently good. I like the added levity as well as the character mix.
6. Aquaman has been really good but after making another run at it I have dropped both Superman titles.
7. I said this before, Colossus as Juggernaut...great concept, terrible execution.
8. Whether you liked Civil War or not, at least I could get behind the topic of debate. I am not feeling that with the Avengers vs X-Men.
9. I am not liking X-Force at all.
10. Semi-off point, just as I think that you could not portray Batman any better on the big screen than what Christopher Nolan has produced so far, the same goes Joss Whedon's production of The Avengers. It was like one of my comics just came to life...but better.
JohnLocke2342
JohnLocke2342 at 12:08 PM May 08

#1 - Agreed.. way, WAY too many titles. I love Batman as well but how badly can DC milk his name by now?
#2 - same
#6 - same as well, yet I haven't picked up Supes
#10 - I'm inclined to agree, even though we don't know what the future will bring to us. Nolan's Batman movies are borderline perfection and The Avengers is perfect in every way.. it was literally a comic translated to the screen.

Terminal_83
Terminal_83 at 07:31 PM May 08

10. I'm very much in agreement with you. WB is going to allegedly return to Batman's fantasy roots, so the reboot so far promises to just be another aping of Tim Burton's style. Which is sad.

Current comic book musings:

1. I love that all four Batman titles are of such high quality. I hope that it can be maintained.
2. I am liking Norman Osborn as a key Avengers foe.
3. I don't like the current line up of the main Avengers.
4. I am not digging the Secret Avengers either.
5. I much prefer the New Avengers to the whole bunch.
6. I wasn't liking the whole Schism thing but Wolverine and the X-men is actually pretty enjoyable.
7. Stop killing Thor please.
8. I struggle wth Superman but Aquaman is turning out to be a pleasant surprise.
9. I liked the idea of Colossus becoming the Juggernaut but they are ruining it with indecision. Sometimes he has the power, sometimes he doesn't. The helmet appears and disappears...all stupid.
10. Too many Hulks...dumb.

Ha Laksmikanti, sadly no. Although I do fly BC a lot now, this list is spread over 15 years and through most of it I didn't. I would get in the lounges because I had frequent flyer status. Everything stated here is very well said. Plus, I admire the fact that your list is so down-to-earth, non-superficial and realistic! I especially appreciate your number 4... no one is "that" pure, and I wish people would stop setting the bar up so high where they can't even see that everyone has some type of nuance or flaw. Manly things about me...I had to give this a whirl.

1. My kids are my priority. Any man who abdicates the responsibility of his children is not a man at all.
2. Wallcrawler said it best...I love women....but none under 30...not that you are not pretty, it just seems wrong.
3. I believe in chivalry.
4. I love to drive fast.
5. While I like both I would pick The Dark Knight over Titanic every time.
6. Similar to the above with meat versus vegetables.
7. I have hair on my chest...luckily, none on my back.
8. I carry my own fork (a la Joey) and sharing food is not my first instinct.

10 movies that made an impact on me growing up (not in any order).

1. The Three Musketeers - the 70s version with the all star cast. My dad used to work shifts and sometimes take me to movies during the day if I was not in school. It was so epic and set the tone for me loving big movies.
2. The "Carry On" films - my dad took me to a few of them. My first exposure to British slap and tickle humour. I always loved them. Sydney James was always a favourite.
3. The Godfather - a must growing up in an immigrant italian household. I loved not having to read the subtitles.
4. Robin & Marion - because my dad took me (common theme). Sean Connery, Robert Shaw and Audrey Hepburn...says it all.
5. The Man Who Would Be King - Sean Connery and Michael Caine...my dad liked Sean Connery.
6. The Bond films - cool guy flying having adventures around the world. What's not to love? A coindidental bit of life foreshadowing for me.
7. When a Stranger Calls - my brother told this story on a rainy night at my nonna's when I was little. Years later I was home alone when the commercial played....then the phone rang.
8. Raiders of the Lost Ark - the only film we saw together in the theater as an entire family.
9. Superman: The Movie - went to see it with my best friend. First time I saw a movie without parents (they dropped us off and picked us up). The exploding Krypton was very cool.
10. Batman (1966) - I would check our TV guide every week to see if this was playing on one of the local channels we picked up via antenna. If it was and I could not watch it, I would cry. My kids can watch it anytime they want on DVD and refer to it as the colourful Batman.

2. My brothers are 6'2" and 6'5". I am 5'8". Same parents.
3. I had to list all the countries I have been to in the last 10 years for my Indian Visa application. I needed a lot more space than they provided.
4. JoBlo.com is the first site I go to in the morning while having coffee.
5. When playing role playing games on my laptop or my 360, I can never bring myself to playing as a villian.
6. As a kid, I wanted to be Batman when I grew up...still do.
7. I love Coke Slurpees...it has to be Coke.
8. I bought my son his first Batman Lego set when he was only 3...I totally wanted to play with it.
9. Have two tattoos and am contemplating a third but have never ever wanted to pierce anything.
