The Expendables 3

Directed by: Patrick Hughes
Written by: Sylvester Stallone
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes, Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kellan Lutz, Jet Li, Antonio Banderas, Dolph Lundgren, Harrison Ford, Terry Crews, Robert Davi, Randy Couture, Kelsey Grammer, Victor Ortiz, Glen Powell, Ronda Rousey
Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Action
Official Site:
Plot: On yet another routine mission, the Expendables stumble upon an old friend, Stonebanks, one of the original members of the crew and now, a vicious war lord. Can Barney look past the revenge and get the job done, or will it consume him until it's too late?

The Expendables 3 throws a lot at you and for the most part, it sticks. It follows the same formula as the previous films: open up with a big action set piece, introduce the problem, get the team together, suffer some form of defeat, band the team together again and shoot the hell out of everyone until the finish. What this film does better, is give the new members something to do and deliver on the action. The final sequence in this film alone warrants a watch in my books as it's the best action the series has delivered yet...[more]...

Directed by: Spike Jonze
Written by: Spike Jonze
Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Olivia Wilde, Rooney Mara, Samantha Morton
Studio: Annapurna Pictures
Genre: Comedy
Official Site:
Plot: A man struggling with connecting to woman as a result of a recent divorce decides to get an Operating System that manages to be self aware, intuitive and lovely. He falls in love with Samantha, as she calls herself. But can a human have a real relationship with an operating system?

I loved being in this world. Jonze creates an incredible world in which he depicts a future that seems not too far away. Bright colours and fashion from our history, such as high waist pants, blends awkwardly well with the advancement of technology showcased here. Not once did I ever think that in our near, or distant future, that we would not achieve what Jonze envisions here...[more]...

Evil Dead

Directed by: Fede Alvarez
Written by: Rodo Sayagues Mendez
Cast: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore
Studio: TriStar Pictures
Genre: Horror
Official Site:
Plot: 5 friends go up to a cabin in the woods to help one of them detox from some drugs. Going cold turkey proves to be more difficult when the uncover an ancient book of the dead, which is bound in human flesh and inked in human blood. When one reads from the pages, it unleashes an evil so grotesque and profound that nothing can stop it. Of course, someone reads from it....

Let me tell you where this review is coming from. I LOVE the original to death, it's my favourite horror film of all time. I've seen the red band trailer and I read the script, so I knew exactly what was going to happen. Did that hinder my enjoyment of the film? A bit, knowing some twists in the narrative makes the film lose some freshness, but I don't think the decision to stay true to the script was all that great a choice. The film is a flawed attempt from people who love the source material. I can still give this remake a passing grade...[more]...

The Expendables 2

Directed by: Simon West
Written by: David Agosto, Ken Kaufman
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke
Studio: Lionsgate
Genre: Action
Official Site:
Plot: While on a mission one of the "Expendables" gets himself killed, this leads the crew to go on a mission of revenge. But is it too much to handle?

I was severely disappointed in the first Expendable film, the mediocre action, the use of CGI blood and the unimpressive villain ruined the experience. So I was hoping that the second time around they would correct these issues. I can safely say, they did and they did it in spades. The big change is Stallone is no longer behind the camera, so he is more focused on his role of Barney and his mind isn't split between two separate places. The biggest change though is the tone, The Expendables 2 does not take itself seriously at all and neither did I, so I had a blast watching what is ultimately a parody of the action genre...[more]...

Kill the Irishman

Directed by: Jonathan Hensleigh
Written by: Jonathan Hensleigh
Cast: Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, Steven R. Schirripa, Vincent D'Onofrio, Ray Stevenson, Paul Sorvino, Linda Cardellini, Vinnie Jones
Studio: Anchor Bay
Genre: Action, Crime
Official Site:
Plot: Kill the Irishman tells the story of Danny Greene and his rise from rags to riches through the mob and their many attempts at killing him. Being of Irish decent, the aspect of this one Irish guy who kept getting on the Italian mob's nerves, it peaked my interest.

The film has a great story to tell and I can only imagine how amazing the film would have been if they had a director like Martin Scorsese behind the camera. That's what I kept feeling while I watched this film, that it was a Scorsese wannabe. That's not exactly a bad thing, because I did enjoy the film, but I wanted to enjoy it so much more...[more]...

Gulliver's Travels

Directed by: Rob Letterman
Written by: Joe Stillman, Nicholas Stoller
Cast: Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Amanda Peet, TJ Miller, Romany Malco, Billy Connelly
Studio: Fox
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
Official Site:
Plot: Gulliver thinks this woman in his office is hot and lies about being a writer so he can go talk to her. She gives him a task to write and he copies off the internet. Impressed with his "writing" she immediately gives him an assignment that takes him into the open sea. Long story short, he ends up in a land with a bunch of really tiny people and he becomes their giant leader.

This movie ranks as one of the worst films of the year 2010. The movie is an insult to the original film and the original book. Jack Black took a concept and re-worked it for a 12 year old with a crappy sense of humour. That's the biggest problem here, it relies too much on juvenile humour and special effects...[more]...

The Ward

Directed by: John Carpenter
Written by: Michael Rasmussen, Shawn Rasmussen
Cast: Lyndsy Fonseca, Amber Heard, Danielle Panabaker, Jared Harris
Studio: ARC Entertainment
Genre: Horror, Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: Kristen burns an abandoned home to the ground and is taken to a psychiatric ward to help with her obvious mental problems. While there she meets four other girls and discovers a secret that lurks in the shadows. A young girl is haunting the place and trying to kill the girls.

John Carpenter's last flick was the underrated and equally horrible, does that even make sense, Ghosts of Mars. That flick took such a beating at the box office and by critics that Carpenter hid away from making big budget films again. He would pop up here and there in the Masters of Horror series with a few short films, but it's with The Ward that he makes his return to the big screen and to scare up those horror fans. The genre has always been hit and miss, with more misses and with Carpenter back in the fold, I had hopes that The Ward would bring back the terror...[more]...
