Directed by: James McTeigue
Written by: Ben Livingston, Hannah Shakespeare

Studio: Relativity Media
Genre: Thriller

Plot: When a madman begins committing horrific murders inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's works, a young Baltimore detective joins forces with Poe to stop him from making his stories a reality.

Review:

Having been a big fan of Poe in high school, I had been curious to see this one, James McTeigue has been a pretty solid director and being a fan of V for Vendetta I was curious to see how this one would turn out. I know critics didn't like this one very much...[more]...

As you mentioned, The Last Stand has a very '80s feel to it: from the dialogue to the plot's events. For some fans, that retro approach is not going to work.
Fortunately, Arnie gets to redeem himself in Escape Plan during September.

Nite Owl
Nite Owl at 11:28 AM May 19

I found it serviceable. Decent enough for what it is, which is Arnie just dipping his toe back in the water. Hopefully The Tomb and Ten make a bigger splash and bring him back into the fold in a big way though.

yeah I'm with you... I give it the same score, just thought it was disappointingly mediocre... the comedy was hit and miss and more than anything the action wasn't anything special... I was expecting so much more, in terms of violence too what with an R rating and the I saw the devil director....

agreed, I thought it was really good, great even, but not fantastic or a masterpiece or anything. I'm with you on the length, it really did not need to be that long... I thought they could've just cut out the final 20 to 30 minutes and it would've been better and just as satisfying.

the Waterboy

1998-poster-waterboy-1

Directed by: Frank Coraci
Written by: Tim Herlihy, Adam Sandler
Cast: Adam Sandler, Kathy Bates, Fairuza Balk, Henry Winkler, Jerry Reed, Larry Gilliard Jr, Blake Clark, Peter Dante, Jonathan Loughran, Al Whiting, Clint Howard, Allen Covert, Rob Schneider, Todd Holland
Studio: Touchstone Pictures
Genre: Comedy
Official Site:
Plot: A waterboy for a college football team discovers he has a unique tackling ability and becomes a member of the team.

Review:

Checked this one out on Blu Ray, hadn't seen it in quite some time...

For starters, this movie is just simply a guilty pleasure...anyone other than Adam Sandler trying to pull of this movie would fail miserably. The premise and story are pretty stupid and the dialogue delivered in any way other than Sandler's would be brutal...This movie is essentially Happy Gilmor with football. Swap out Weathers for Bates, Golf for Football, Love Interest and Antagonist and you pretty much have a similar movie.

Casting was decent, Kathy Bates was excellent and I'm still to this day surprised at how well she fits in, Henry Winkler is also great and probably owes Sandler some credit for resurging his career. The rest of the cast is pretty much filled with Sandler regulars.

The Blu Ray was decent, there's punchy chroma and then there's The Waterboy...damn those uniforms were bright. It's almost as if they were glowing. Not sure if that's a negative, but the disk looked decent with the exception of some over compensated chroma at times.

Overall, it's silly...but it's a fun mindless time when Sandler was near the top of his game.

21 Jump Street

21jumpstreetnewposter

Directed by: Phil Lord, Chris Miller
Written by: Michael Bacall, Jonah Hill
Cast: Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, Channing Tatum
Studio: Sony Pictures
Genre: Action
Official Site: www.21jumpstreet-movie.com
Plot: A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring.

Review:

Watched this one for the first time the other night, have to say it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be.

Usually movies adapted from Television shows don't turn out so well, especially when they're comedies. With this one, they certainly seemed to get a lot of things right.

The premise was pretty stupid, but the movie just worked. You have to give the writers credit. Taking a stereotypical plot from the 80's and adapting it into a full blown movie that doesn't come off stupid, doesn't drag and is pretty damn entertaining.

The comedy was decent, great mix of situational comedy, gags, one liners all mixed with some decent action sequences. Let's face it, Channing Tatum doesn't exactly have the best track record when it comes to movies...but comedy?! I was pleasantly surprised. Jonah Hill also had some great timing and chemistry with Tatum which is what made the movie work so well. The addition of Ice Cube was excellent and he clearly stole every scene he was in. Also, some great little cameos sprinkled throughout to keep momentum going.

The blu ray was excellent, no complaints at all.

Overall, a surprisingly decent comedy that is probably one of the funniest movies I've seen released in the past couple of years. Definitely need to watch this one again!!!

yeah I thought the pacing in the first act was poor as well, it took too long to kick into gear, namely with the whole sequence with the dwarves in Bilbo's home. I mean, I hope and assume they'll flesh out the dwarves more in the next two movies, because even with all that time in the house it really didn't distinguish the dwarves from one another that well, but still not a huge deal. I absolutely loved it, more than I thought I would -- and can't wait for the sequel!! Nice review man

50/50

50-50-movie-poster

Directed by: Jonathan Levine
Written by: Will Reiser
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas-Howard, Angelica Huston
Studio: Summit Pictures
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Official Site: www.50-50themovie.com
Plot: Inspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.

Review:

Got around to watching this one on Blu Ray, had heard some good things about it and the cast looked decent.

The plot which was inspired by true events is pretty straight forward. JGL and Rogen are best friends, JGL gets diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and proceeds to go through life. Pretty much every single element of this movie is forseen coming by anyone who's seen their fair share of these type of movies. No real twists, a few good chuckles along the way and a feel good ending.

It's a good way to kill a few hours and was entertaining, probably not a movie I'd revisit on a regular basis, but was certainly worth checking out. The acting was great, everyone did a decent job with Anjelica Huston stealing most of the scenes she was in
. The dialogue was well written...I think it's just the overall plot that falls a bit flat.

The Blu Ray looked decent, nothing that would blow you away, but no complaints either. Sharp picture, detail blacks and tones were great.

Overall, glad I watched it. I'm going to hang onto this one...not sure if I'll watch it very often, but just in case.

Clear and Present Danger

1994-clear-and-present-danger-poster1

Directed by: Phillip Noyce
Written by: Donald Stewart, Steven Zaillian, John Milius
Cast: Harrison Ford, Willem Dafoe, Anne Archer, Henry Czerny, Benjamin Bratt, Thora Birch, James Earl Jones
Studio: Paramount Pictures
Genre: Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: CIA Analyst Jack Ryan is drawn into an illegal war fought by the US government against a Colombian drug cartel.

Review:

I have always had a hard time trying to distinguish which of the Ford outings of Jack Ryan I like better.

Ford was at the top of his game in this one and as we all know he's not the most versatile actor in the world, we do get standard Ford line delivery, the charming facial expressions and even a few memorable speeches all of which make his performance excellent...the plot is a bit more intricate than Patriot Games and makes up for less action with a bit more drama, politics and story. The supporting cast was excellent, James Earl Jones and Anne Archer, both in limited roles were excellent and Willem Dafoe was awesome as he always is.

The blu ray was sharp with nice details and decent for a movie of this age. No haze, tones, chroma and blacks were all great. No complaints at all.

Overall, it's a personal favorite of mine and certainly a movie I've seen many times and will see many more times in the future. It was a bit of a no-brainer picking this one up. Certainly a must have in my collection.
