Review: Suck
A friend told me about this movie a few years ago and while it stayed in the back of my mind it wasn't one I was able to get my hands on until I saw it on sale on Blu Ray.
Half decent comedy. Not "bust a gut" funny, but a general light vampire movie with some gore injected, an entertaining story that has tons of cameos...Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins (rockin' a mullet), Moby & Alex Lifeson all appear and play memorable characters. All of them appeared to enjoy what they were doing on screen. Alex Lifeson would probably by the highlight as a border guard - When finding out the kids are in a band "I used to be in a band!" and having fun snapping on rubber gloves with an index finger extended...followed a close second by Moby as the lead singer of a Punk band...Cap that all off with Malcolm McDowell as a Vampire Hunter and the cast is pretty rounded out with talent. Also nice to see Dave Foley from Kids in the Hall pop up as the kids band manager...
This movie just screams Canada all over it - Apart from the fact it takes place in Canada it was Written, Directed and Starring Rob "Phil the Alien" Stefaniuk with tons of nods to the Great White North- It's a pretty decent attempt for Stefaniuk who clears to be getting better at this whole Directing thing. Some stylish effects and transitions throughout that add to the story without being distracting or cheesy. Also had some interesting scenes throughout that resembled album covers from classic rock bands. I caught two of them, but I'm sure there are more throughout...
Movie is Entertaining enough to carry for 90 minutes without dragging. It's a fun movie that shouldn't be taken seriously and can probably be appreciated by fans of Vampire flicks.
Blu Ray looked about as good as one would expect. They really had a bland color scheme for most of the movie once Vampires were introduced. When they did have color in scenes it was well saturated and really popped. Together it added to the viewing experience. Hadn't seen this one before, so have nothing to compare it to, but the Blu Ray was clearly worth it...
Glad I found it, glad i bought it, glad I watched it..
7/10
