On this day in 1977, a movie called Star Wars first opened in theatres. It continues to enchant audiences and reaffirm our love with the fun and excitement and, shit yes, the MAGIC of film. May the Force be with you all.

Daily Ebert Round-up: April 2013

Dailyebert1
1. **** Baraka - "If man sends another Voyager to the distant stars and it can carry only one film on board, that film might be "Baraka." It uses no language, so needs no translation. It speaks in magnificent images, natural sounds, and music both composed and discovered. It regards our planet and the life upon it. It stands outside of historical time. To another race, it would communicate: This is what you would see if you came here."
2. *** Evil Dead 2- "There is one shot in the film that is some kind of masterpiece..."
3. **** Animal House- if the misconception of critics being stuffy, pretentious, and only like depressing foreign films is an empty beer can, then Ebert crushes it against his forehead with this four-star rave review.
4. *** Jurassic Park- "You want great dinosaurs, you got great dinosaurs."
5. *** Conan O'Brien Can't Stop- "I appeared many times on his original program, most memorably being attacked by a man in a bear suit. I always liked him."
6. * The Waterboy- he didn't like it.
7. ***1/2: The Insider- "There is, I admit, a contradiction in a film about journalism that itself manipulates the facts. My notion has always been that movies are not the first place you look for facts, anyway. You attend a movie for psychological truth, for emotion, for the heart of a story and not its footnotes."
8. ***1/2 The Hunt For Red October- "Somehow we feel this is more than a thriller, it's an exercise in military and diplomatic strategy in which the players are all smart enough that we can't take their actions for granted."
9. ** Clue- "The way Paramount is handling its multiple endings is ingenious. They're playing each of the endings in a third of the theaters where the movie is booked. If this were a better movie, that might mean you'd have to drive all over town and buy three tickets to see all the endings."
10. ***1/2 I'm Not There- "By creating this kaleidoscope of Dylans, Haynes makes a portrait not of the singer but of our perceptions."
11. *1/2 Kazaam - The Shaq classic. "... As for Shaquille O'Neal, given his own three wishes the next time, he should go for a script, a director and an interesting character."
12. (ZERO STARS) North- "I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it."
13. **** Five Easy Pieces -"'Easy Rider' proved in 1969 that Jack Nicholson was a great character actor. 'Five Easy Pieces' proved in 1970 that he was a great actor and a star. This is the film, more than 10 years into his career, where he flowered as a screen presence, as Jack the lad, the outsider, capable of anger, sarcasm, self-pity, also capable of tenderness and grief, ready for violence but not very good at it."
14. *** 1/2 Collateral - "Mann allows dialogue into the kind of movie that many directors now approach as wall-to-wall action. Action gains a lot when it happens to convincing individuals, instead of to off-the-shelf action figures."
15. **** May - "It follows the traditional outlines of a horror or slasher film, up to a point--and then it fearlessly follows its character into full madness. We expect some kind of a U-turn or cop-out, but no; the writer and director, Lucky McKee, never turns back from his story's implacable logic. This is his solo directing debut, and it's kind of amazing. You get the feeling he's the real thing."
16. * Bad Boys II - " a bloated, unpleasant assembly-line extrusion in which there are a lot of chases and a lot of killings and explosions. Oh, it's all done with competent technique. Michael Bay, the director, is a master of this sort of thing, and his screenplay was labored over by at least four writers, although there is not an original idea in it."
17. ** My Name is Bruce - "If you don't already know who Bruce Campbell is, it will set you searching for other Bruce Campbell films on the theory that they can't all be like this. Start with "Evil Dead II," is my advice. Not to forget "Bubba Ho-Tep." In fact, start with them before "My Name Is Bruce," which is low midrange in the Master's oeuvre."
18. *** Beavis and Butt-head Do America - "It would be easy to attack B&B as ignorant, vulgar, depraved, repulsive slobs. Of course they are. But that would miss the point, which is that Mike Judge's characters reflect parts of the society that produced them. To study B&B is to learn about a culture of narcissism, alienation, functional illiteracy, instant gratification and television zombiehood. Those who deplore Beavis and Butt-Head are confusing the messengers with the message."
19. *** Permanent Midnight - "Last month I saw a revival of Otto Preminger's “The Man With the Golden Arm,” the first of Hollywood's drug movies, with Frank Sinatra in the title role. Sinatra got an Oscar nomination for the role, in which he portrayed the pain of withdrawal. Stiller, playing Stahl, makes it look incomparably worse. Either the drugs are getting stronger, or the actors are."
20. ***1/2 All The President's Men- "Who'd have thought you could build tension with scenes where Bernstein walks over to Woodward's desk and listens in on the extension phone? But you can. And the movie's so well paced, acted, and edited that it develops the illusion of momentum even in the scenes where Woodward and Bernstein are getting doors slammed in their faces."

What were the worst installments of these Franchises?

250px-attackoftheclones_novel
1. Star Wars- Episode II: Attack of the Clones. "SAND. SAAANND. SAND MAKES ME SOOOOO SAAAAADDDDDDDD" no. Even the title is redonk.
2. Saw- I didn't see all of them but the one where the guy gets his head clomped by the blocks of ice was pretty dumb and I found myself falling asleep during it.
3. Alien- AVP:R. Aliens and Predators invade suburbia and as an added bonus it's lit worse than a phillipino whorehouse, I assume to cover up the cheap effects. Fuck yourselves, Strauss brothers, then go fuck each other, fuck each other as hard as you fucked the fans. Burn in hell.
4. Mission Impossible- Maybe II actually because it was just after Woo's peak. Lots of slomo and little of anything else.
5. Nightmare on Elm Street- THE FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT REMAKE
6. Indiana Jones- They're all excellent but Temple of Doom is probably my least fav.
7. Halloween- Resurrection. So goddamn pointless. "TRICK OR TREAT MUTHAFUCKA" no.
8. Rocky- V...yeah. definitely V. Not that I hate it with a passion but it's the weakest for sure.
9. Friday the 13th- Jason Goes To Hell. WTF were they smoking?
10. Texas Chainsaw Massacre- SHOCKER I have actually not seen them all. But probably the one with Zelwegger.
11. Child's Play- Seed of Chucky. OH HAHAHA WE'RE SO META. Such a masturbatory, lame, unfunny dried turd. But Jennifer Tilly's cleavage was nice.
12. Harry Potter- All EXCELLENT but my least fav is Order of the Phoenix.
13. Twilight- I only saw the first one on a bootleg DVD that I bought in Chinatown that was clearly filmed with a camera at the theater but it wasn't that good.
14. Underworld- I don't think I've seen any of these.
15. Star Trek- I haven't seen every single Star Trek motion picture but Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was pretty meh.
16. Pirates of the Carribean- I literally fell asleep during both Dead Man's Chest (at the actual theatre!) and At World's End and I haven't seen the 4th one but probably Dead Man's Chest is the worst.
17. James Bond- Quantum of Solace. Even the worst of the Roger Moore Bonds at least felt like they were James Bond movies. Quantum of Solance does not feel like a James Bond movie. Actually, it doesn't feel like a movie in general at all.
18. Fast and the Furious- I don't think I've seen any of them but Tokyo Drift.
19. Batman- Batman Vs. Plant Lady, The Ice Puns, and Latent Homosexuality.
20. Superman- VI quest for peace. Yikes.
21. Resident Evil- They're all really great I don't think I can choose.

The Last Exorcism > Paranormal Activity

Lastexposter
1. There's an actual legitimate reason why everything's being filmed since it's a documentary and you can suspend your disbelief that they'd keep the cameras rolling a lot easier.
2. It has an actual plot instead of just long scenes of absolutely nothing happening followed by a fucking jump scare.
3. It has actual character development and good acting and doesn't feel like the filler scenes of a porno.
4. It has interesting themes and invites the viewer to actively participate and think about what they're watching and decide whether or not what's happening in the movie is supernatural or not.
5. Oh gee it actually feels like it was written and directed and filmed professionally and doesn't feel like it should be uploaded under a Youtube video with the title ****ACTUAL GHOST FOOTAGE, CAUGHT ON CAMERA!! 100% REAL********
6. None of this is at the cost of being creepy or scary. It is.
WalkAway
WalkAway at 10:02 AM Oct 30

While these people are the epitome of stupid, I have also experienced a form of micro naps. I don't know if that's what they're called, but one time I stayed away for almost 60 hours and I ended up being so tired I'd fall asleep without even realizing it. I'd be watching TV and a second later open my eyes not even realizing they'd closed. That doesn't make NOES the remake any less god awful, I just thought it was interesting.

The Royal Tenenbaums

Dudleysworld
1. This was the first Wes Anderson movie I ever saw, though I remember vividly having the chance to see Rushmore but deciding to see The Faculty instead.
2. I can't watch the opening scenes where it shows Margot's birthday party without expecting Angelica Huston to blow out the candles on the birthday cake and have her hair catch on fire (this is a blooper on the special features, not part of the movie, but damn).
3. Every time I watch it it never ceases to baffle and enrage me that Gene Hackman wasn't nominated for an Oscar for his performance...easily in his top 3. HUGE snub.
4. Oh and it's defnitely the best thing Luke Wilson's ever done, for what it's worth. Probably Paltrow too.
5. The movie doesn't get enough credit for its lesbian scene with Gwenyth Paltrow making out with a topless French chick.
6. Wes Anderson CLEARLY hates dogs, or something.
7. MAJOR PLOT HOLE VIA IMDB'S GOOF SECTION: During the tent scene, a The Rolling Stones record is playing. The two songs played consecutively are "She Smiled Sweetly" and "Ruby Tuesday". It is clear that no tracks are skipped. Although both songs are on the Rolling Stones' album "Between the Buttons", these songs have never appeared consecutively on any Stones' release.
8. (spoilers) When Raleigh finds out about Margot cheating I always thought Bill Murray was saying "You've made a cock out of me." But he's actually saying "cuckold," damn you Wes Anderson/Owen Wilson with yer fancy college words.
9. Because of this movie Owen Wilson is an Oscar-nominated writer, think about that one.
10. I didn't mention Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller in #4 because Zoolander, duh.

Batman Begins

Dawwws
1. Ra's Al Ghul shows up into the movie literally before the 5-minute mark which is interesting.
2. The Tumbler is fucking awesome, I've always loved it. Maybe not as sexy as the Batmobile from other movies, specifically Burton's but it is a beast and awesome and I still think the chase scene with it is one of the highlights of the trilogy.
3. Katie Holmes was really good in the movie. People are too hard on her. Maggie Gyllenhaal is unquestionably the better actress but Katie Holmes is competent in the role. I know that's not the hugest praise in the world but I'd argue against anyone who says she has no business in the movie.
4. People make fun of Bale's Batman voice in TDK and to some extent TDKR. Does that mean people think he does the best voice in this movie? I thought it was good but sue me, I actually like the gruffer sounding voice of The Dark Knight the best.
5. In a lot of ways this is obviously the best of the three but in other ways I'm a huge fanboy of TDK so nevermind.
6. Liam Fucking Neeson.
Weapon X
Weapon X at 09:33 AM Aug 03

My problem with Holmes' Dawes wasn't so much the performance as her stilted dialogue.

Terminal_83
Terminal_83 at 09:41 AM Aug 03

For me Maggie was just more convincing in her role than Katie was.

goNADSgo69
goNADSgo69 at 03:43 PM Aug 03

Maggie is a better actress, but I have to agree: I think Katie is fine in the role. I hate saying she is the weakest actor in the first film, because I think she is still pretty darn good.

While I prefer Maggie in the role, I like the way Rachel was written in the first film more.

2. An Asian kid dressed up as Alfred, with the bowtie and everything
3. Some dude with a Scarecrow bag over his head (possibly Asian)
4. Two very flamboyantly homosexual men dressed as Batman and Robin with the hugest crotch bulges I have ever seen, they may have been stuffing socks in there
5. A girl with Joker makeup
6. A white dude as The Riddler
7. A girl in a Batman cape
8. Generally a lot of Batman T-shirts, natch

There was a full-costume Batman and Joker sitting next to each other in my theater. At one point they joined hands and started singing Bohemian Rhapsody. Before that, the Batman encountered a full-costume Bane in the lobby and briefly engaged in a mock-fight before exchanging an "I love you, MAN!" hug.

Also, nearby the Joker Lady I photographed, there was a male Poison Ivy.

The Meaning Behind My numerical rating system

Bakerboys
1. So bad that I would give it a 0 but since we don't have 0 I would give it a 1 but the meaning behind the rating is that it's the lowest possible rating, that's how bad it is.
2. Really bad but not so bad as it deserves a 1 which technically would be a 0 but close enough.
3. Bad but maybe someone somewhere out there could find some good in it in which case I kind of feel bad for it so even though it's not my thing I should at least throw it a bone and give it a 3, that's the least I could do.
4. Not quite good enough to be sort of good.
5. Sort of good but not really, EG. "I'd give it a 5"
6. Good movie that is worthy of a 6 but not a 7.
7. A movie that is very good as in a good movie being worthy of a 7.
8. Good movie that is better than good like a different kind of good other than normal standard good which would probably be around a 6 or a 7.
9. Super good movie that perhaps surpasses all normal good and even could be considered great but for whatever reason doesn't quite reach the criteria needed for a 10/10 but is very close to that rating, much closer than 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, or 1.
10. MacGruber level good.

Ranking the best films about the Vietnam War

215px-apocnow
1. Apocalypse Now
2. The Deer Hunter
3. Full Metal Jacket
4. Platoon
5. Born on the Fourth of July
6. Actually you know what... I think I'm content to stop at five movies in this list. I really don't want to start reaching and start putting down shit I don't really believe in like "durr We Were Soldiers and some parts of Forest Gump, that's close enough, teehee." No. These five are good. Excellent fucking movies. But yeah Apocalypse now is pretty much the easy number one, there's really no beating it and you can argue it all you want but you're pretty much just being an asshole and being wrong and not recognizing it as one of the finest pieces of cinema to ever grace the screen in the history of the medium. So fuck you. Fuck you and your unique opinion. Apocalypse Now.
7. Also you can judge me if you want for including two Oliver Stone movies but he's a great filmmaker and the guy knows his shit.

Thoughts on my mindgrapes while watching The Deer Hunter on Blu-rizzle

Deerhunterwithbambi
1. The transfer is magnificent.
2. During the opening credits I always expect the film to cut out to a video of my girlfriend cheating on me. Yes, this is an obscure reference to Jarhead. But it's stuck in my head every time now.
3. Chris Walken's very first line in the film is a dirty joke (did you hear about the happy Roman? He was glad'he'ate'er).
4. John Cazale is a legend.
5. This is a movie that's noteworthy for many reasons, but one that occurred to me is that this movie took Meryl Streep's Oscar virginity. Out of, what, 17 Academy Award nominations in her career, this was the first. Pretty cool
6. It was kind of weird watching this so soon after having watched Watchmen...This movie is a blunt, uncompromising and devistating account of the war and the effect it had on real people, meanwhile Watchmen uses it almost as a novelty, albeit a thoughtful one.
7. I remember the episode of Friends where Ross is arguing with Tom Selleck about The Deer Hunter and Coming Home. Ross thought The Deer Hunter starred Jon Voight instead of John Savage, what a fucking idiot you are, Ross. Stick to dinosaur knowledge.
8. Christopher Walken never ceases to knock me out with his performance, not to diminish the performances of everyone else, they were all top notch, but it was an Oscar well earned on Walken's part.
9. The Russian Roulette scene still holds up, incredibly gripping.
10. Ah, who am I kidding? No one's reading this right now, The Walking Dead is on right now. I can pretty much say whatever I want. Cock fart! Titties!
Mr.Blizzo
Mr.Blizzo at 08:42 PM Mar 11

Made Up Movie Roles in Made Up Movies I Want to Play

Gregorybookman
1. Gregory Bookman- World's Greatest Detective The character I play would be a down-to-earth comic book store owner who sees a mysterious woman in a wig night after night until finally he discovers it's Anne Hathaway and then he bangs her.
2. Raleigh Potter- Harry Potter and the Pane of Time I would play Harry Potter's long lost brother who discovers a magical spell that can open a window into an alternate universe- my character discovers that in another reality, the real life experiences of Harry Potter and his friends is just a work of fiction and that they have even based movies on it. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson will all play themselves as characters in this universe and my character will bang Emma Watson.
3. Brad Youngston- Get a Grip My character would be a grip working minimum wage who is working on the set of the 2010 film Black Swan and while cleaning up the set for the day after everyone has left encounters Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman rehearsing the lesbian scene and then bangs them.
4. Eric Jafoe- The Canadian A Canadian boy moves to Hollywood to try to make it into show business and after a long period of little success he runs into Scarlett Johansson at a Starbucks and then goes back to her apartment and bangs her.
5. William J. Bellerstien- Easy B: I play a top-ranking movie reviewer for a successful newspaper who gives Emma Stone's new movie a poor review. Emma Stone becomes obsessed with the bad review and then tracks him down and demands he give it a good review. He agrees to give the movie a good review but only if she bangs him, at which point they bang.
6. Dr. Emmett Klein- The Big Bang Theory My character plays a brilliant scientist determined to discover the meaning of the universe. Night after night he researches and theorizes with the aid of his assistant played by Christina Hendricks. They are about to bang but then he discovers he was a ghost the entire time. Written and directed by M. Night Shamaylan.

Favorite Disney Animated Films

Aladdin_and_genie
1. Aladdin because I'm a boy and yeah I guess it's one of the more boy-centric Disney films. Also Robin Williams is a god and he did some monumental voice acting which I don't think he is given enough credit for when considering the effect and role it played in animated productions in general. Also I fucking swear I tear up every time Genie says "you'll always be a prince to me, Al."
2. The Jungle Book because of super nostalgia and the fact it was one of the first Disney movies I ever watched.
3. The Beauty and the Beast because Gaston is all man.
4. The Lion King because it's The Lion King.
5. These are the ones I feel strongly about.

A list for no reason

1. One good thing about this chilly weather is that I can realize I've left my zipper down a lot faster
2. Out of the Married With Children cast everyone has had pretty good careers and remained current except for David Faustino, who I can only remember seeing on an episode of The New Addams Family, and that was like 10 years ago
3. Glen Taranto was a good Gomez Addams DAMNIT.
4. A friend pressured me into making a tumblr account but all I could think was "this is alright but it's no MFC"
5. In a past life I was a lunch lady.
6. You are now singing the Adam Sandler song "Lunch Lady Land" in your head.
7. I'm afraid of elevators and while I haven't seen the movie Drive yet I hear there is some crazzzyyy scene in an elevator so that makes me not want to watch it.
8. There are never enough hours in a day.
9. I could post 10 items but I think 9 should be fine.

Feel-good movies IMO

Mrs_doubtfire
1. Any Batman movie- I like the fact that they can be so different in tone so there's always a Batman movie to choose depending on my mood, so if one day I'm like, "hey, I feel like watching a horrible fucking movie but one that has Batman in it," Batman & Robin will do.
2. Any Freddy movie- I know it's horror and has gruesome murders and stuff but watching a Freddy movie is like cinematic comfort food to me. Except the remake which I hate and oh my god don't get me started.
3. Mrs. Doubtfire- I think I'm always in the mood to watch this no matter what. This movie is the prosthetic tits.
4. Dumb & Dumber- This is actually a good break-up or girl-trouble movie because I think the underlying message of the movie is that when it comes to women, men are stupid idiot morons of borderline retarded levels like Harry and Lloyd
5. Die Hard- it's Die Hard
6. Pretty much any John Hughes movie - I mean come on. Obvious.
7. The 40-year-old Virgin- I think it has magical powers to make me smile
8. Back To The Future- a large nostalgia factor but it's an A+ movie no doubt
9. Evil Dead trilogy- kind of the same as #2
10. Almost any animated Disney movie which is also fairly obvious just because of general movie quality and again nostalgia. Aladdin is definitely high on my personal fav list tho.
11. I'm probably leaving out a lot but this is just the top of my head here

Villains I'd like to see in a Batman movie once Nolan's trilogy is over

Clayface8_super
1. CLAYFACE- One of my favourite characters. It would be interesting to see how they could handle it once the more reality-based Nolan films are done with. It would be cool from a special effects perspective, and I think it's a villain worth exploring, as he has a little more depth to him and has a classic tragic backstory like with most of the best Batman baddies. And wouldn't it just be the bee's tits if they got Ron Perlman to play him?
2. MR. FREEZE- I want the fucking awful taste of Arnold Schwarzenegger's pun-happy Freeze out once and for all. What does it say about this character when his best incarnations have been in the cartoons and video games? Way back in '97 names such as Ben Kingsley and Patrick Stewart were thrown around to play him, and if they were still game I'd love to see either of them do it. Either choice would be excellent IMO.
3. SOLOMON GRUNDY- I was obssessed with this character as a kid, particularly in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #39 where Grundy terrorizes and camping trip and it's up to Batman to stop him. Yes, he's just kind of a big, hulky, grunt, but the way he's been presented in some incarnations is almost like a classic Universal monster that's scary, threatening, but also sympathetic. It would be perfect for Batman. Hmm, if only Tim Burton came back?
4. MAD HATTER- Uh, leave Tim Burton out of this one, though.
5. DEADSHOT- Alfred brought up a nifty notion in Arkham City, which I'm sure must have been used as a tagline in some comic at some point: "The World's Greatest Detective Vs. The World's Deadliest Assassin." Come on, there's a movie there somewhere. Added to the fact that the character totally rocked the shit in Batman: Gotham Knight and was arguably the stand-out story, I think if in the right hands it would make for a kick-ass Batman flick.
6. THE PENGUIN- I never understood why so many people would never shut up about wanting Bob Hoskins to play The Penguin in a Batman movie but once I saw how awesome they could make the character in Arkham City, I can see exactly what they had in mind, as it is probably the closest thing we will get. If they were to reboot the franchise, he would actually be a very good place to start, since he's still a fairly average crime boss type and he plays an important role in the conception of Gotham City.
7. ANARKY- Again this stems from my taste in the Shadow of the Bat series, which is where I was first introduced to this character. He looks pretty cool IMO, kind of a rip-off of V in many ways, but I like the fact that it is just a young kid. Kind of like more of an opposite of Robin than of Batman. I don't see him headlining the entire picture or anything but he would make for a good side character, caught in the middle of the conflict, classically torn between good an evil.
8. ZSASZ- Well let's say they want to go in a totally different direction and make the Batman series crrrraaazzzyyyy gritty, he would be perfect. He deserves more than just a 3 second cameo, doesn't he? I could totally see it working if they wanted to set Batman's tone more to the tune of something like Se7en or Saw, which, by they way, feels kind of like what they're doing with the new Detective Comics. Maybe this new DOLLMAKER villain guy will be filmable, too?
9. MAN-BAT- Giant fucking bat. Kind of werewolf-y story-wise. It could be cool. I mostly remember this character from The Animated Series and I think it could work if it isn't a CGI peice of garbage.
10. THE JOKER- Simply because I can never get enough Joker. Heath Ledger seems impossible to top, sure, but we have to face the fact that the character did not die along with him. It's not like it would be disrespectful to his memory. It's a great character and The Joker will outlive anyone who has or ever will portray him on film/in media. I know a lot of people would love to see him finally team up with Harley Quinn on the big screen, that could be interesting.
JohnLocke2342

this is a phenomenal list and I love all of these choices.. especially Deadshot.

OldKingClancy

Last movies purchased from Blockbuster before its close.

Blockbusterbye
1. The Town (Blu-ray)
2. Blue Valentine (Blu-ray)
3. Animal Kingdom (DVD)
4. Somewhere (DVD)
5. The Last Exorcism (DVD)
6. Exit Through The Gift Shop (DVD)
7. The haul came to about 50 bucks, which averages out to approx. 8 dollars per movie. Not a bad deal. Not GREAT, but pretty good. It was more kind of a sentimental thing anyway, this was my last chance to grab some movies from Blockbuster's "Previously Viewed" wall. It was something I loved doing for years and I'll never be able to do it again. If I had more money, believe me, I would have bought A LOT more. Very bummed out about this, to be honest.

Why I will still buy the Star Wars Blu-rays

Darth_vader_nooo_7675
1. Star Wars is still Star Wars. Star Wars is still awesome. Even the compromised versions.
2. I don't own any of them on DVD, I only own the originals on VHS and the 1997 special editions on VHS. I had the DVD set once but I lost it or something.
3. If they're going to make us all double dip the movies for the millionth time at least there's something a little new to them. And hell, maybe some of the changes will be good. Personally I'm hoping they finally get Jabba done right in A New Hope. The '97 version actually looks better than the 2004 version, WTF?
4. If you really want to get the true nostalgic feel of your childhood you should be watching the VHS versions anyway, most likely it's the way you viewed it when you grew up. You can get them on ebay or any second-hand shop for under 10 dollars.
5. People are speculating the original unaltered versions will eventually be available on Blu-ray, just like what happened with DVD. But I don't know. I just have a gut feeling it will never happen, regardless of the high demand. If anything it will be available on the format via painstaking fan projects, that will only be available on bootlegged BDs, and the only way you'll be able to find copies will be if you like, know a guy who knows a guy. It will be like a quiet rebellion against the evil empire, so to speak.
6. The packaging is pretty cool isn't it?
7. I love Star Wars.
8. I am a tool.

Bad luck I've had with DVD/Blu-ray purchases over the last year or so.

Img0889
1. Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Blu-ray Collection: for some reason it includes the Dr. Strangelove disc from a 2009 BD release of the film. Will most likely exchange it tomorrow. (Best Buy)
2. Ed Wood: damn thing started skipping in the middle of the movie. I went to get it exchanged, but they had no more copies so I just got a refund. Too bad, cause I was really enjoying the movie and had never seen it before. (HMV)
3. Roseanne Season 1: missing the second disc in the set. Returned and exchanged. (Wal-Mart)
4. Alien Anthology: one of the images in the booklet was upside down. Didn't really realize or care that much. It was the image of the CGI alien from Alien Resurrection about to jump up from the water. Not a big deal, really. Kept it. (HMV)
5. The Exorcist Blu-ray: the entire inside of the booklet is upside down. As in, you look at the cover and it seems normal then open it up and everything inside is upside down. Disorienting. It was the last copy and I didn't feel like going through the whole painful ordering process. Kept it. (HMV)
6. The Office Season 2: every single episode plays fine except for the very very last one, "Casino Night." Pretty important episode too. Unfortunately I threw out the reciept so I just downloaded the episode and burned it onto a writable DVD and stuck it in the inside slip. (Wal-Mart)
7. Home Improvement season 6: first disc didn't work at all. A few episodes worked on disc 2 but then the rest all skipped horribly. Didn't bother checking disc 3. I exchanged it. TWICE. Same problem each time. Fuck. Got a refund and I am Home Improvementless. (Wal-Mart)
8. South Park season 9: episode "Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow" doesn't work. I just didn't give a fuck. Kept it. (Wal-Mart)
9. Grindhouse Collector's Edition: both discs just play the first 10 minutes of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas then the screen just goes blank. I dunno, I was alright with that. Kept it. (Okay I made that one up.)
10. Keep in mind these are all new purchases. None used. I buy plenty of used movies and have had no problems with any of them. I guess I should just avoid HMV and Wal-Mart, no matter how tempting the deals may be.

I stand by my opinion that Beverly Hills Cop needs a 4th sequel. For one, the third was god awful. R-ratings have been getting more attention lately. Eddie Murphy needs the save and he has stayed in relatively good shape for his age, he could totally take it.

WP-DFA at 08:49 PM May 10

@yoshi - pshh I know! I'm just saying, it was a pretty stupid idea for the quality of VHS, but it was smart in the business sense, easy money for the studios with people wanting to buy the new version. Truth be told though, it looked like shit... especially back then when the rich people bought the best TV's, which were just giant tube TV's, so it showed the quality even more... and then for all the normal people with normal size TV's, the widescreen thing was just like 'wtf'? lol

Thank god for DVD and blu-ray (and HD TV)

Some reasons why The Faculty is awesome...

The-faculty-robert-patrick1
1. Frodo, the T-100, Jean Grey, Carrie's mom, Lillith from Cheers, Hyde from That 70's Show, Shooter McGavin, and Harry Knowles for some reason- all in the same movie? Wrap your mind around that shit.
2. It has the best creepy naked old lady scene since The Shining.
3. I love how the coach is doing the "Hey I am not an alien even though I am totally an alien" routine throughout the first half of the movie.
4. The start of Usher's embarrassing acting career. He said he was going to give up music and only act and then after appearing in like a 5 second role in this and then maybe 2 other movies he went back to music. Ha.
5. So much water-drinking in this movie. I had to pause it like 14 times to go to the washroom.
6. The drug dealing bad boy is of course a genius and gets with the hot teacher.
7. Kevin Williamson cannot write a movie without including at least one scene where a character is being chased by the bad guy and throws a bunch of shit at him.
8. References to naked footage of Neve Campbell and Jennifer Love Hewitt, heehee.
9. Daniel Defoe is being discussed in the English class.
10. "If you were gonna take over the world, would you blow up the white house Independence Day style or sneak in through the back door."
11. Some rockin songs on the soundtrack. And the rest of the music sounds like the leftovers from Scream's musical score.
12. Salma Hayek gets ear raped.
13. John Stewart gets eye raped.
14. They pretty much ripped off the blood test scene from The Thing except with taking drugs and nowhere even close to being nearly as tense, but Elijah Wood's tweeked out giggling more than makes up for it.
15. Clea Duvall is hot. Whatever happened to her?
16. Cool late 90's CGI.
17. "Casey, since when did you become Sigourney Weaver?"
18. Alien queen T&A. Nice.
19. Drugs save the day.
20. It isn't afraid to have a super happy ending, even though there are people who should technically be a lot deader than they actually are in the end. LOL @ the end credits and John Stewart with the eye patch!
BigEvil84
BigEvil84 at 02:23 AM May 07

I really love this movie but I do have a minor problem with the movie: Why is Jordana Brewster hiding in a bus waiting for Elijah Wood and how did she know that Elijah would be in that bus trying to hide from the aliens in that scene near the end? I still don't understand it.

I recently caught this on Syfy or something and forgot how fun it was. Its really just a goofy movie with a really fun cast, just going for it. Jon Stewart as the teacher was awesome.

Ideas for future straight-to-DVD Scream sequels...

Lindsay-lohan-scream-5-movie-poster
1. Sidney, officially sick and tired of psychopaths stalking her, goes off the grid and no one can find her. Luckily, she has a long lost half sister that the killer decides to go after.
2. Ghostface lets loose his killing spree during the production of Stab: The Stage Musical.
3. Ghostface in Space, duh.
4. It turns out that Ghostface is actually a supernatural entity all in its own, and all of the killers from the previous movies were posessed by his evil. In actuality, he is an indestructable killer like Freddy or Jason. And he can kill you in your dreams. Yeah, why not.
5. The original cast reunites in another 10 years as Ghostface terrorizes a nursing home.
6. The new group of movie nerd teens discuss the rules of dead franchises that go straight to video. "Simple rules are, production values are way down, we're looking at second-rate here, the killer is looking to underwhelm and phone it in."
7. A shot for shot remake of the first Scream. No acknowledgment whatsoever.
8. The killers turn out to be the Weinsteins.

Thoughts.

2001
1. I should stop by the store and pick up something to drink. What was it that I wanted earlier? Oh yeah, Nestea. But do I really want Nestea? No, I want something carbonated. Yeah, something that feels cool and bubbly on my tongue.
2. I wonder how I should act when I get in? What is me acting normal? I don't know, cause you always change the way you act all the time cause you're a freak.
3. They should scare kids out of doing drugs by making more newscasts where there was some horrible accident or death and say "Police are baffled, but the coroners have reported that marijuana was found in his system."
4. I don't want to listen to this song, it reminds me of how much a pussy I am.
5. I don't want to listen to this song, it reminds me of how I'm going to hell when I die.
6. This one, too.
7. Damn, I have strange taste in music.

10 reasons you should watch The Venture Bros.

Brock2004812-05_1092303677
1. It's funny as hell.
2. A great collection of characters: Dr. Venture, Brock Samson, Hank, Dean, H.E.L.P.E.R., The Monarch, Dr. Girlfriend, Orpheus, Molotov Cocktease, I could on and on.
3. It has a really cool storyline that pieces over through the episodes, so it is worth watching from the very beginning and on, it's the perfect show for marathoning.
4. It is extremely geeky. So many references to films, comics, songs, video games, etc.
5. Brock Samson is the ultimate badass, and voiced by the equally awesome Patrick Warburton.
6. There are ridiculous super villains-galore.
7. David Bowie is a key character (celebrity voice impersonated).
8. For a cheaply animated Adult Swim show, it has surprisingly good action scenes.
9. It is very rewatchable, there are still many things I miss and catch when re-watching it, and I've gone over seasons 1-3 at least 4 or 5 times now already.
10. The packaging on the DVDs is pretty badass, too.
Derek237
Derek237 at 05:13 PM Apr 03

I will also be honest and say I'm not really all that much into Adult Swim to begin with. I don't get The Cartoon Network anyway and I got into Venture Bros. through DVD. But the show is sooooo worth checking out! For really really reals!

Firsts, Ones, & Prefers (An epic collabo with Horrorfan23)

2-17-201110
1. First ever Rated R movie - Terminator 2 I think?
2. First PG-13 movie - Probably Batman. Yeah, Batman sounds right. Batman is awesome.
3. First Animated feature - I'm thinking Land Before Time. I think I may have even seen it in theatres, but I don't know for shizzle.
4. First ever NC-17 movie -We don't have that rating in Canada.
5. First UNRATED movie - Evil Dead.
6. First Foreign movie - I don't remember the name of the movie but it was about some kid in some poor country that enters a race in order to win shoes because he can't afford shoes and he runs the whole race barefoot, if this sounds familiar to you let me know.
7. First movie you stood in line for more than 30 minutes or camped out for - Spider-Man, and I do think that was pretty much the only time in the history of my entire life I've waited in line for a movie for that long.
8. First movie to make you loathe Hollywood - Hmm, good question, I'm not sure.
9. First movie to make you cherish Hollywood - I'll let you know.
10. First movie to give you nightmares - Alien 3.
11. First movie that made you horny - The Witches.
12. First MANLY movie - Terminator 2 I guess.
13. First CHICK flick - Titanic maybe?
14. First movie that made you fall asleep during - Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, at the drive-in...but I woke up to What About Bob? which was awesome.
15. First movie to get your blood pumping with excitement - Die Hard!!! Yippie Ki-yay Motherfucker!!!
16. First movie to make you curse aloud and scream what you thought of it - Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
17. First movie that made you so depressed about humanity - Meet The Spartans.
18. First movie to inspire you - The Graduate perhaps, what it inspired, I do not know.
19. First movie you had a lengthy, educated, discussion about with another individual - The Exorcist maybe? It lead to a lot of questions I had about faith and evil in the world.
20. First movie you had a short, stupid conversation about with a moron - Brokeback Mountain, I picked up some DVDs from a store that was going out of business and selling titles for cheap and I ran into a friend of mine who saw the bag of DVDs and asked what I got and when I showed him Brokeback he looked irked and said "This belongs in the garbage."
21. One movie trailer that still gives you goosebumps - Requiem For a Dream.
22. One movie you LOVE, that everyone hates - I Am Sam.
23. One movie you HATE that everyone loves - The Ring.
24. One movie that you think Never deserved an Oscar - Just one???
25. One movie you think should have won an Oscar but didn't - Say what you want about the movie itself and even though it's not a major major category or anything, but the fact that the AMAZING art/set decoration for Scorsese's Gangs Of New York lost to Chicago is a damn shame. 10 nominations and 0 wins, ouch.
26. One movie that exists that REALLY FUCKIN SHOULDN'T - Rebecca Black: The 3D Concert Experience. What's that you say? That movie doesn't exist? Just wait.
27. One movie that should've had a sequel but didn't - Anchorman, but I am still holding out hope.
28. One movie that had a sequel that shouldn't - There are quite a few, aren't there? Too hard to decide.
29. One movie you wouldn't mind seeing before you died - The Dark Knight Rises, coming summer 2012, followed by the apocalypse, coming winter 2012.
30. One movie you would watch first if you were ever reborn - Monster's Inc?
31. One movie you'd re-do to make it better -A Nightmare On Elm Street (remake)...I understand that it's pretty much impossible to not remake/reboot such a popular franchise, especially since everyone else is doing it, but Freddy deserved so much better. They fucked everything up so horribly. The story, the characters, the entire atmosphere-- clearly they had no respect for the original films and above all no respect for the fans (Samuel Bayer told fans to "get a life" in an interview, which still pisses me off), if it HAD to be done, it should have been done much better. And it still would have made money. It would have made money if it were really good, and it would have (and did) make money if it was bad (which it was). I would rather it be good.
32. One movie with Too many "Movie Mistakes" -Superman IV: standing for truth, justice, and glaring budget cuts.
33. One director that you want to disappear forever - Samuel Bayer. Fuck you, buddy, how bout you go get a life? Twatface douchebag.
34. One director that you want to grow and succeed -Duncan Jones. The Bowie runs strong in him.
35. One movie you would take if you were stuck on a deserted island - Star Wars.
36. One movie that you wanted to be around during its production - Evil Dead II.
37. One Novel you want to see made into a movie -The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay. With the huge huge popularity of comic book movies these days, I feel this is a story that needs to be told. Last I heard Anthony Minghella and Sydney Lumet had expressed interest in bringing it to the big screen, but I suppose the project died along with them, at least for now.
38. One Comic Book you want to see made into a movie - The Maxx.
39. One celebrity or fictional character you want to have a Passionate Night with - ScarJo in the Black Widow outfit, plz.
40. One celebrity or fictional character you'd beat the shit our of if you could get away with it - Sean Penn because he's currently banging ScarJo.
41. Sequels or Prequels? Sequels.
42. Reboots or Remakes? Reboots.
43. 3-D or 2-D? 2-D.
44. Sequels, Trilogies, Quadrilogies, or Series? A well-done trilogy is a sign of integrity and lack of selling out.
45. Directors Cuts, Extended Cuts, Unrated Cuts, or Theatrical Cuts? Theatrical, how about we get it right the first time, huh?
46. Oscars or Golden Globes or Golden Schmoes? Mix all three together and you have a hell of an Award Show...James Franco isn't invited though, unless he brings some really awesome weed for everyone to share.
47. TV stars turned Movie Stars or Movie Stars turned TV Stars? TV stars turned Movie Stars, the other way around seems like a demotion. At least, maybe it did 10 years ago. Now I would say they're just about equal. But I'd like to see an actor tackle both TV and movies at the same time, like the wonderful and talented Katherine Heigl.
48. DVDs or Blu-Rays? Combo pack, baby!
49. Charlie Sheen Crazy, Mel Gibson Crazy, Gary Busey Crazy, or Tom Cruise Crazy? Gary Busey Crazy.
50. Sensual Love Scene or Sexy Sex Scene? Both mixed together with canola oil.
51. Armageddon or Deep Impact? Deep Impact.
52. Dante's Peak or Volcano? Volcano.
53. Post picture of your favorite movie or TV character (fictional or real)

Some of these are a little outdated so don't feel bad. The ones I personally think you NEEED to see are 8,16 & 25. 8 1/2 ia bit overated IMO but still great, that one you have to get that film nerd crad back!

Ive only seen 2 of them...dont feel bad.
Kramer vs. Kramer and Annie Hall
both are good.

Quotes I'm always quoting

232980-jar_jar_binks_large
1. "Okie-day" - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
2. "I'm Batman" - Batman (well, er, pretty much any Batman movie really...I usually do it Bale style, yo)
3. "Hoo-hah" - Scent Of A Woman
4. "I've had one foot off the merry-go-round" - The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
5. "Appy Polly Logies" - A Clockwork Orange
6. "Yeah, well, that's just like, your opinion, man" - The Big Lebowski
7. "The power of Christ compells you!" - The Exorcist
8. "Faaaaack you" - Departed style, yo
9. "The customer's always right!" - I Am Sam style, yo
10. And of course I try to work in any quote no matter how well known or how obscure from any of the Alien movies into my life.

The thing about #1 is that I always say it by accident. Like, I guess I'm trying to say "okie dokie" but it comes out "okie day."

A little ashamed, but it's #1 for a reason, it happens quite a bit.

Oscar nom wishlist

Inception_lg
1. INCEPTION to lead the nominations. At this point, I doubt it will win best picture, but considering all the technical marvels of the film, I hope its victory will at least be in getting the most nominations of all the best pictures.
2. GREENBERG to get some love. Best actor? Hmm, doubt that one. Best actress? Stranger things have happened. Best screenplay? Seems like a category suited for films that are well-recieved critically but not so much commercially, like this one.
3. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO to be nominated for best actress, best foreign language film, and possibly adatped screenplay.
4. SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD to get a nomination for ANYTHING. At the moment, it seems like its best bet is for visual effects. Throw it a bone, FFS.
5. TRUE GRIT to get acting nominations for Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld. The best actor category seems to be pretty tight this year and considering they gave Bridges the award last year they may not feel bad about snubbing him, but the fact is it's one of his best performances ever and it should be honored. And with Steinfeld, whether she's nominated for leading or supporting, I don't care, just recognize her great work.
Derek237
Derek237 at 04:10 PM Jan 24

Never say never, The Academy is nominating 5 films for Best Visual Effects this year and Scott Pilgrim is one of 7 finalists in the running for a nomination. It really could happen...

*won the award

Also, while searching some of these songs and the category for the award I learned that the Eric Clapton song "Tears In Heaven" was nominated for a Golden Globe, since it was on the soundtrack to the 1991 film RUSH. I did not know this. I didn't really want to add it to the list...somehow it feels wrong that such a personal, heartbreaking song would be slapped on to such a mediocre movie.

Things the Golden Globes at least did better than the Oscars.

20080114234850jim-carrey_with_his_golden_globe
1. Nominating WONDER BOYS for best picture, and best actor- Michael Douglas.
2. Jim Carrey winning awards for THE TRUMAN SHOW and MAN ON THE MOON, while not even being nominated by the Academy for those roles.
3. Gene Hackman winning best actor (comedy) for THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, yet he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar!!!
4. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN winning Best Picture, while CRASH wasn't even nominated.
5. THE AVIATOR winning over MILLION DOLLAR BABY, also Leo winning best actor.
6. LEAVING LAS VEGAS nominated for Best Picture.
7. Awarding Sigourney Weaver a Best Actress statue (though she was tied with Jodie Foster and Shirley MacLaine).
8. Nominating Steve Buscemi for Best Supporting Actor for GHOST WORLD.
9. Nominating Uma Thurman and David Carradine for their roles in the KILL BILL movies.
10. Nominating NATURAL BORN KILLERS for anything (it was nominated for Best Director).
11. Nominating and awarding much better original songs than the Oscars, this could practically make its own list. Actually, I think I'll make one!

My Favourite Roger Ebert Reviews (No Particular Order)

Roger-ebert-memoir
1. Superman (Great Movies edition), Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight (people give him a hard time for his review of Kick-Ass but the fact is the man knows his comic books, and knows the evolution of their adaptations on film)
2. Marie Antoinette (an excellent review praising a film most critics damned, it's admirable, straight to the point, and beautifully written)
3. Garfield: A Tale Of Two Kitties (the infamous review written through the point of view of Garfield the cat)
4. E.T. (Great Movies edition, written as letter to his grandchilden)
7. Mean Streets (Great Movies edition)
8. Lost In Translation (Great Movies edition)
9. The Longest Yard (2005) (a very amusing review where Ebert struggles with himself for giving a favourable a review to a movie that maybe he shouldn't have given a thumbs up)

My Pre-Christmas Dinner Holiday Themed TV Show Episodes Marathon

9594
1. FRIENDS: "Phoebe's Dad" - Joey and Chandler buy presents at the gas station. They give Monica some condoms. "They're ribbed, for your pleasure!"
2. FAMILY GUY: "A Very Special Family Guy Freakin' Christmas" - Stewie is paranoid about Santa watching his every move and Lois freaks out after Christmas goes terribly wrong. Back when the show was still funny and unpredictable.
3. NEWSRADIO: "XMas Story" - Nothing brings on the Holiday spirit like the store Santa threatening to kill Bill McNeil.
4. ROSEANNE: "White Trash Christmas" - Tacky Christmas decorations and Sarah Chalke in a hooters uniform. Yum.
5. BATMAN, THE ANIMATED SERIES - "Christmas With The Joker" Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg, the Batmobile lost its wheel, and The Joker got awaaayyy!!! Classic.
6. FRASIER: "Perspectives on Christmas" - A series of interconnecting vignettes of the Crane family's disatrous Christmas experiences. Oh Holy Hilarity!
7. SOUTH PARK: "It's Christmas Time in Canada" - Matt and Trey so accurately portray life in Canada, it's almost frightening.
8. 30 ROCK: "Ludachristmas" - A Christmas episode as only 30 Rock could bring us. I particularly liked Andy Richter as Liz's brother, stuck in a mental state of the day before his ski accident in high school. "So in his mind, Reagan is still president. You lucky bastard."
9. THE OFFICE: "Christmas Party" - Michael Scott continues his quest to be the best boss ever and the best friend ever. Secret Santa Gifts exchange run amok and booze coming to the rescue, merry Christmas!
10. COMMUNITY: "Comparitive Religion" - Sure, the newer Christmas episode is much more memorable, but this one reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas: beating up Anthony Michael Hall.

Movies with really stupid twists

7xsl000z
1. REINDEER GAMES- What could have been a pretty decent holiday themed caper turns into an absolute joke in the last act when there's at least like 3 different twists that are each more mind-numbingly stupid than the last. They're ridiculous and barely plausible and you gotta sit there rolling your eyes as the characters stand there explaining what the twist is and what the motivations are behind it. Ugh. Oh well, the movie isn't a complete loss: there's some good action scenes and we get to see Charlize Theron's tits.
2. SMOKIN' ACES- It's been a while since I've seen the movie so I can't fully remember the moronic twist at the end, but be honest: do you remember it either? And do you fully understand it? And if so, do you really care enough to comment below and explain it? I sure hope not. It's one of those twists that's thrown in just to get the movie to end, and it does it in the most fucking underwhelming way possible.
3. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2010- Woah...wait a minute! So does it turn out that Freddy was actually innocent of molestation all along, and that he was unjustly murdered by the mob of parents?? Turns out...nope. He definitely diddled those kids and took pictures, too. Yeah, big surprise. Is it even considered a twist when you know the red herring is bullshit anyway?
4. THE BONE COLLECTOR- Not only does this twist come out of fucking nowhere, and not only could they have revealed the killer as just about any schmuck in the background, and not only does the killer monologue about his evil plan and reasoning (which is really cheesy btw), but the killer is so bumbling and idiotic he can't even kill a paraplegic.
5. THE BLACK DAHILIA- The movie runs out of steam after the first 20 minutes or so anyway and the whole thing is a struggle to give a shit about, so when there finally is the "grand reveal" you're thinking, "Oh, so THAT's who did it! Uh...who was that? Why? Oh, whatever, I don't care. I just don't care."
6. SOUL SURVIVORS- I was going into this expecting some kind of horror flick but it barely even qualifies as one. It's not scary, or interesting, or entertaining in any way, shape, or form...and the twist at the end is so predictable it's difficult to even label it as one. It feels like a poorly written student film.
7. FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING- So for the whole time I guess you're supposed to be wondering whether or not Tommy Jarvis has gone insane and started going around dressed as Jason killing people, or if maybe Jason really actually is alive and back, but no, it turns out it was that one guy you saw in 2 scenes earlier in the movie. Mrs. Voorhees and Jason= creepy. Ambulance driver guy= lame.
8. U-TURN- People trick and screw over other people for money, you don't know who to trust, twist, twist, twisty twist twist...we've seen this kind of thing a million times but it's particularly aggravating with this movie because from Oliver Stone and Sean Penn, you'd just expect so much better.
9. PLANET OF THE APES 2001- How do you top one of the greatest twists in the history of film? Well, you can't. Yeah...you can sort of piece together what happened and why it ends the way it ends, but it is not a shocking revelation at all, it's just a shitty way to end a movie, even if you don't compare it to the original.
10. MOVIES THAT EMPLOY THE "SUPRISE! MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER LOL!" GIMMICK- it is lazy writing, it is cheap, and it's usually very predictable. Yes, there are exceptions...but like 75% of the time I find this kind of twist very insulting.
drc5145
drc5145 at 06:07 PM Dec 07

Planet of the Apes 2001 was a pretty stupid ending. It doesn't help that Burton doesn't even have a clue what's up with it (someone on YouTube posted the ending with Burton's commentary over it)

Even thought of a channel name - Retron

BEFORE THEY WERE STARS...They had bit parts on Roseanne!

Roseannedvd
1. GEORGE CLOONEY- His character was actually pretty important in the first season, playing Roseanne's boss and Jackie's would-be boyfriend. He got fired from the plant then mysteriously disappeared. He mysteriously RE-appeared a few years later. Only to mysteriously disappear again.
2. LEONARDO DICAPRIO- Before Growing Pains, even before Critters 3, Leo was on Roseanne, playing a classmate of Darlene's. He has no lines but you can see him in the background in a classroom scene.
3. JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT- Playing one of DJ's friends..an odd little boy who collects coins.
4. TOBEY MAGUIRE- Playing a random jock, a friend of one of Darlene's potential boyfriends.
5. ALYSON HANNIGON- Playing one of Becky's interchangable school girlfriends.
6. STEPHEN DORFF- Playing Becky's first boyfriend. He looks so young and dorky, I didn't even recognize the guy!
7. BILL MAHER- Playing a budoir photographer who takes sexy pictures of Roseanne. Ooh la-la!
8. STEPHEN ROOT- Playing a clueless personal injury lawyer.
9. BRAD GARRETT- Playing a banker who gives Dan and Roseanne a loan.
10. JENNA ELFMAN- Playing a rock-star wannabe hitchhiker.

Best Thanksgiving scenes (in non-Thanksgiving-related movies)

51ppnxvl3ql
1. SCENT OF A WOMAN- Pacino makes everybody uncomfortable and a fight breaks out.
2. THE DOORS- The turkey is burnt, everybody's drunk and or high, and a fight breaks out.
3. GRINDHOUSE- The trailer for "THANKSGIVING" fills you with the holiday spirit.
4. ROCKY- Rocky and Adrien's first date, d'awww...
5. THE ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES- A more accurate depiction of American History...
6. AMERICAN GANGSTER- Denzel has a lovely dinner while junkies die in the streets.
7. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN- Things get tense between Jack Twist and his father-in-law. Mustaches and electric carving knives FTW.
8. SPIDER-MAN- Harry Osborne puts two and two together and realizes that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Also, Aunt May slaps him on the hand for sneaking a bite before grace. You can tell that really pissed him off.
9. WALK THE LINE- The dinner gets tense between Commodus and the T-1000.
10. THE ICE STORM- Cristina Ricci says grace (what is it with Ricci ruining thanksgiving??)

If these movies get remakes I would boycott them indisciminately.

Alienbig
1. ALIEN (Yeah I know there are many people who are iffy about the prequel, but as a die-hard fan I am profoundly thankful they're taking this route rather than going for the remake)
2. THE EVIL DEAD (Anyone remaking Evil Dead obviously wouldn't understand what makes it so awesome in the first place. It would be a guaranteed fail right from the get-go)
3. STAR WARS (Give me 100 Clone Wars animated films before a remake, seriously)
4. GONE WITH THE WIND (70+ years without a remake, so far so good)
5. THE EXORCIST (Yeah..I can just imagine, horrible demonic CGI effects. Kill me now.)
6. DIE HARD (It's already been knocked off dozens of times so why even bother, other than to completely shit on Bruce Willis' signature franchise?)
7. FIRST BLOOD (Let me guess: Rambo as a grizzled IRAQ veteran? Played by an ex-wrestler trying to make his way in to movies? Fuck the fuck off!)
8. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (Could you imagine the balls someone would have to try to remake what is possibly the best-regarded science fiction film of all time?)
9. BACK TO THE FUTURE (Those rumours of Justin Bieber starring in a BTTF remake really made me wanna puke)
10. GHOSTBUSTERS (Who you gonna call? How about a fucking studio that can come up with an original idea!!!)
MadMyke17

The MOVIE was better than the BOOK (IMO)

The_shining_face
1. THE SHINING (Nothing against King's book, it's great by its own rights, but by the end of it all it kind of plays out like an anti-drinking melodrama while Kubrick's film is much more enigmatic and unrelenting)
2. THERE WILL BE BLOOD (I'm still trying to get through Upton Sinclair's "Oil!" and I bought it in 2008)
3. A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (apparently the story goes something like this: an intern or agent or something gave the graphic novel to Cronenberg to consider adapting and he said "Are you fucking serious?")
4. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE ("Q & A" laid out the groundwork and concept but Danny Boyle's film flows much better and feels grander in scale, and ends much better)
5. PRIMAL FEAR (William Diehl has pretty much established himself as a low-rent Tom Clancy, with Martin Vail as his own Jack Ryan...but Primal Fear has a GOOD story that's escalated by GREAT performances)
6. MILLION DOLLAR BABY (Took the strongest short story of a collection of "behind the ring" tales that varied in quality, Eastwood/Haggis worked their magic to extend upon it and make the Oscar-winning film that we all know today)
7. JAWS (much improves upon the novel and wisely removes some of its "adult situations")
8. HANNIBAL (Yeah, most people don't care about the movie but could you IMAGINE the reaction if it were more faithful to the book, especially the ending? Uncomfortabbbllleeee)
9. ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (lol I don't care about Chief's point of view, sorry)
10. THE 10 COMMANDMENTS (Boy, don't get me started on the source material. Talk about preachy)

Sequels I like to ignore

Avp
1. Alien Vs. Predator 1 & 2 (I do not view them as prequels to the Alien movies...fuck that)
2. Terminator 3 & Terminator Salvation (Everything was tied up nicely with T2, everything else is bullshit, and don't get me started on the TV show)
3. Spider-Man 3 (I'd rather try to remember the hopes I had for a 3rd after seeing #2 than accept this goofy crap)
4. Halloween Resurrection (Despite some flaws, H20 ended the series on a high note, I even prefer the Myersless Halloween III over this shitty, insulting sequel)
5. Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (Ugh.)
6. Batman & Robin (almost goes without saying, doesn't it?)
7. Son Of The Mask (I mean come on)
8. Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (Another shitty sequel to a funny Jim Carrey movie that shouldn't have bothered)
9. The Omen IV: The Awakening (not even straight-to-video bad, it's straight-to-TV bad!)
10. Pretty much any straight-to-video Disney sequel (Though I kind of liked the Aladdin sequels)
Fabster
Fabster at 01:28 PM Nov 20

Batman & Robin has to be up there as one of the worst big budget commercial films ever made...in terms of quality not box office. Painfully brutal.

TeamZissou
TeamZissou at 04:50 PM Nov 20

The Sarah Connor Chronicles was legit. I stuck with the show to the end of season 2. It only improved over time and was substantially better than Terminator 3 and Salvation. Far from a TV sci-fi classic like Battlestar or Babylon 5 but had the balls to take itself seriously as opposed to fighting one ridiculous robot after another every week.

I'm still working on Ghostbusters, actually. I check back in with it every once in a while but it's not a game I'm super-eager to complete. Mostly because I feel like I have to play really close attention to it, as it almost works as a movie...it's really plot heavy. Not really the quality I look for in games. But for what it is, it's decent.

I thought the same thing, it would have been great as the 3rd Ghostbusters movie, but didn't work so well as a game.

Tips on writing a review for MFC, the DEREK237 WAY!

Image_c78d901e5
1. Make sure to write your reviews IN YOUR OWN WORDS, even if you're not 100% confident in your writing style. We're all friends here. Everyone's opinions are valid. But if you're even considering plagiarising someone else's work, you shouldn't be writing a review in the first place. We don't need another Tom S. Perkins.
2. The "Plot" section of your review isn't actually requesting that you outline the plot of the movie you are reviewing, rather it's just for confirming whether or not the film does, in fact, have a plot. Most of the time you should type in "Yes" but when it comes to the films of directors such as David Lynch or Gus Vant Sant, a simple "Maybe" or "I'm not sure" will suffice.
3. I strongly encourage rambling on incoherently for as long as possible, regardless of its relevance to the movie you are reviewing. If you need to go on tangents about what happened during your day or complain about some bitch that dumped you in high school, it can only make your review stronger.
4. Your reviews should be as vulgar as possible. This isn't the IMDb comment section for God's sake, there's no censorship. Take advantage of it. If you feel that Julia Roberts came across as a cunt in her newest movie, MFC is the perfect arena in which to express your opinion.
5. Be sure to make up words to make yourself sound super smart. Some examples: serenitive, inabsurdity, artesque.
6. Try listening to music to gain some inspiration. I reccommend listening to the works of Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Slayer, and Reba McEntire.
7. If you're sober while writing your review, you're doing it wrong.
8. Always give the film a 10/10 rating, regardless of its quality or whether you enjoyed it or not.
9. Always chuck for spelling mistakes.
10. Remember, THE CAPS LOCK KEY IS YOUR FRIEND.
11. Once your review is published and on the site, be sure to submit it to the Pullitzer Prize committee. Because you never know.
Nite Owl
Nite Owl at 10:56 PM Nov 10

I just ramble incoherantly for 3 paragraphs and click submit myself.

I'm going to print this out and post it above my computer. Great list.

darthpaul64
darthpaul64 at 10:35 AM Nov 11

You do make some good points, but I really hope the 10/10 thing was a joke...the majority of the time I just look at the number rating. I'm likely to read it if someone disagrees completely with me or it's a movie I was mixed about. But if I see the same person grading on a 7-10 scale, I usually skip right over it...

Oh and NO SPOILERS! Even some things that aren't considered spoilers I consider spoilers.
If someone uses the word depressing or sad, you know a main character you like is going to die at the end.

10 things that went through my mind while watching ALIENS again for the umpteenth time

Aliens-poster-0
1. Jones the cat is pretty much the only character in the series to go on to live a normal, happy life.
2. I can really relate to Ripley because we both wear Reeboks.
3. I love how Apone has the cigar ready with him in cryosleep.
4. I love how much Ripley fucking hates Bishop and acts incredibly passive aggressive to him for the first 2/3 of the movie ...it's actually pretty funny.
5. Hudson never fails to crack me up.
6. Vasquez is kinda sorta hot but not really. It's weird.
7. Some people will complain that Newt is annoying but come on it's not like she's Shortround or anything.
8. I still can't watch reruns of Mad About You cause of that fucker Burke.
9. I'd like to see the events of the film through the aliens' point of view. You know, like their planning their infiltrations and all that, maybe the queen could give some Patton-esque speech or something...could be humorous.
10. OH MY FUCKING GOD THEY DIGITALLY REMOVED LANCE HENRIKSON'S TORSO PEEKING OUT OF THE HOLE IN THE FLOOR.

Ya know what really annoys me? My mom will go to the video store and rent a movie that I have suggested for her, THAT I OWN, instead of borrowing mine! Why? "Because you have that messed up version. When I watch it, I want to see the whole picture." Yes... I have tried to explain it to her.

Best Cameos (spoilers)

Zmblandposte
1. ZOMBIELAND: Bill Murray, as himself. Best fucking cameo ever. I feel sorry for anyone who had it spoiled.
2. HALF BAKED: Bob Saget, as the guy who "used to suck dick for coke." (Jon Stewart, Willie Nelson, and Janeane Garofalo were great, too)
3. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN: Gene Hackman, as the blind man.
4. AUSTIN POWERS IN GOLDMEMBER: Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny Devito, Steven Spielberg- good shit.
5. THE EXPENDABLES: Arnold Schwarzenneger, as Trench, appearing onscreen in an angelic glow as if he's the second coming of Christ.
6. HOT SHOTS! PART DEUX: Martin Sheen, basically reprising his role from APOCOLYPSE NOW and passing by his son Charlie on a boat.
7. SCREAM 3: Jay and Silent Bob, such a WTF moment, but good fun.
8. WAYNE'S WORLD: Robert Patrick, once again playing the T-1000 in search of John Connor. LOL!
9. PLATOON: Oliver Stone, as a soldier who falls victim to an enemy's kamakazi attack. Whether you love him or hate him, it's fun to watch Stone get blown the fuck up. Best director cameo of all time IMO.
10. WEDDING CRASHERS: Will Ferrell, as Chazz Reinhold. Ferrell's no stranger to popping up unexpectedly, but this is his best cameo. He singelhandedly saves the movie in its lagging final act.
11. MEN IN BLACK 2: Michael Jackson, as an alien lobbying to become "Agent M." Shit movie, but a fun cameo.
12. PAPARAZZI: Mel Gibson, as the man in the lobby waiting to see a therapist. Timeless.
13. THE AVIATOR: Willem Dafoe, as Roland Sweet. Not a particularly funny cameo or anything, but it was amusing to see him randomly show up in the middle of the movie.
14. DODGEBALL: Chuck Norris, as himself. "Fuckin' Chuck Norris." 'nuff said.
15. JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK: A whole bunch of great cameos, too many to list!
Derek237
Derek237 at 07:48 PM Aug 23

NOTE: While making this list, I did a google search of "Best cameos of all time" and stumbled upon a thread I started here 3 years ago, where I listed some of the cameos mentioned here, told a user to go fuck himself, and went on a strange tangent where I called Jay Leno a "class act." Oh, 2007 Derek, you're so goofy.

10 things you may not know about your buddy Derek237

Derekchaplin
1. I'm half Italian and half Irish. Just like Henry Hill, bitches.
2. When I was a kid I wore 3D glasses too long and out in the sun. To this day I see a light tint of red in my left eye and blue in my right.
3. I became a huge Stanley Kubrick fan at age 11. So much so that I wanted my confirmation name to be Stanley. However, there were no saints named Stanley. So I went with the closest thing: Stanislas. *facepalm*
4. I suffer from migraines.
5. I had braces until I was 21.
6. I've met like, half the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation.
7. I became a minor local celebrity last year, being known as "The Free Spring Roll Guy."
8. I'm a distant relative of famous author Daniel Defoe, but not related to Willem Dafoe.
9. I have no tattoos or piercings of any kind. But I dyed my hair once. Jet black.
10. I tried converting to Scientology but it was too expensive.
randychico
randychico at 02:10 PM Aug 17

Is #2 really true? about you seeing a light red & Blue tint? haha... oh and ditto on #5

Derek237
Derek237 at 04:11 PM Aug 17

Yep #2 is absolutely true. Most of the time I don't notice it but it will be hard for my eyes to register images that contain a lot of red and blue. They almost pop out at me as if I were still wearing the glasses. And it's particularly bad if it's really bright out, but in that case, I'll just pop on my shades anyway. ;)

You know it never occurred to me until writing this list but maybe #2 and #4 are somehow related lol.

Derek237
Derek237 at 04:15 PM Aug 17

Hmm I wonder if that dude from Back To The Future ended up having similar problems. He must have worn those damn things for hours on end while filming.
