Daily Ebert Round-up: April 2013

What were the worst installments of these Franchises?

Based on a list by TheChanges23
I'm glad you explained your choices Derek. These are pretty good. OH and the saw you were thinking of was Saw IV.
Alien vs. Predator Requiem was the worst thing ever made. I almost regret loving movies for a second, but then I just watched Predator with Arnold, and it was all better.

The Last Exorcism > Paranormal Activity

1. Michelle films everything all the time. So I'm willing to believe someone else would also be into filming their lives, especially if weird stuff started happening.
I understand the reasoning but it's a lot easier to swallow with Last Exorcism IMO

While these people are the epitome of stupid, I have also experienced a form of micro naps. I don't know if that's what they're called, but one time I stayed away for almost 60 hours and I ended up being so tired I'd fall asleep without even realizing it. I'd be watching TV and a second later open my eyes not even realizing they'd closed. That doesn't make NOES the remake any less god awful, I just thought it was interesting.
Movies I watched on my 4-day weekend.

The Royal Tenenbaums

Cool list. I will always remember watching this movie for the first time with my pop.
My favorite Wes Anderson movie. And yes, definitely one of Hackman's best performances.
My fav eps of Batman: TAS

Batman Begins

My problem with Holmes' Dawes wasn't so much the performance as her stilted dialogue.
Maggie is a better actress, but I have to agree: I think Katie is fine in the role. I hate saying she is the weakest actor in the first film, because I think she is still pretty darn good.
While I prefer Maggie in the role, I like the way Rachel was written in the first film more.
Cosplay I saw at my TDKR midnight showing
There was a full-costume Batman and Joker sitting next to each other in my theater. At one point they joined hands and started singing Bohemian Rhapsody. Before that, the Batman encountered a full-costume Bane in the lobby and briefly engaged in a mock-fight before exchanging an "I love you, MAN!" hug.
Also, nearby the Joker Lady I photographed, there was a male Poison Ivy.
a lot of batman shirts, a few kids dressed up as batman (which is wtf, why is your 5 year old up at midnight), etc
First movie of a franchise I saw in theaters.

Ranking the best films about the Vietnam War

Have you seen Stone's 'Heaven and Earth'? It came with an Oliver Stone dvd set I bought a few years ago and I still haven't seen it.
Apocalyps e Now was one of the first dvds I ever owned and was one of the best experiences I ever had watching a movie.
@Blizz I have seen it, only once actually, and it was pretty good. Not up to snuff with some of the other movies Stone has done but IMO it's worth watching just for Tommy Lee Jones who is great in it.
Thoughts on my mindgrapes while watching The Deer Hunter on Blu-rizzle

Couldn't agree more with #4. Cazale was indeed a legend...unbelievably talented. Have you seen "I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale"? It's a great little doc on Cazale's life and career.

A list for no reason
what pisses me off is how they at least extend alternative options for european internet users but i guess canadians are just chopped liver
For real? That blows. Anyway the gist is that Faustino is a badass super spy that turns down major blockbuster films to fight terrorism. You know, that old chesnut.
Having seen Drive I'd say you should be more afraid of Ryan Gosling than elevators.
Feel-good movies IMO

Mrs. Doubtfire. Only Robin Williams in drag can bring such happiness and laughter.
Villains I'd like to see in a Batman movie once Nolan's trilogy is over

this is a phenomenal list and I love all of these choices.. especially Deadshot.
I think Zsasz would be a great villain, the fact that his kills are random would make him such a threat.

My ranking of the Star Wars films

@MJZ - so? I'm just commenting like everyone else, people have mentioned they've loved Empire plenty of times, and they never get a comment like that, come on - same deal, just different opinion ;) cheers
Lol @ MJZ's comment.
Anyway I'd rank Attack of the Clones over Phantom Menace, but great list either way.
Last movies purchased from Blockbuster before its close.

I loved almost all of these movies, and still need to see Blue Valentine.. great haul!

Why I will still buy the Star Wars Blu-rays

I'd probably agree... if I had a blu-ray. Now I don't have to give a fuck and I can wait till someone makes an HD copy out of it with fan corrections
DVD shopping list for September

As much as I love the movie I'm fine with the DVD for right now, not a huge priority.
My ranking of the Planet of the Apes films

Keep in mind I haven't seen the director's cut and only have the compromised theatrical version as a reference. But either way I feel like Escape, Rise, and Conquest feel about equal. This list in pretty much ranked as 1 masterpiece, 3 really good movies, and 3 "just alright" movies. I can't say there's any I hate. Not even the remake.
I need to sit down and have an Apes marathon very soon. I've only seen the original Planet of the Apes, the 2001 remake, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes which I saw last night. Very good movie!

I have Super Star Wars, Donkey Kong Country 1 &2 and Super Mario World all for SNES, some of my all time favorites.
All titles I still own, with box and manual on SNES. I'm fuckin ancient!
Things I hope to accomplish on my vacation next week
Bad luck I've had with DVD/Blu-ray purchases over the last year or so.

#1 Just checked my recently bought Kubrick Collection. I'm the same way. And I got mine on Amazon.
Trilogies that still don't have that awkward part 4 (...yet...)

Toy Story 3 owns, get the hell out of here.
Great list though Derek, the Back to the Future Trilogy is sacred to me.
I stand by my opinion that Beverly Hills Cop needs a 4th sequel. For one, the third was god awful. R-ratings have been getting more attention lately. Eddie Murphy needs the save and he has stayed in relatively good shape for his age, he could totally take it.
Widescreen VHS editions I own/have owned

^ There was no DVD at the time.
Now I feel like doing one of my own of these!
Cool list. I've got a few leftovers stored away, just cause I can't part with them, because I remember how happy I was to have found them in widescreen.
@yoshi - pshh I know! I'm just saying, it was a pretty stupid idea for the quality of VHS, but it was smart in the business sense, easy money for the studios with people wanting to buy the new version. Truth be told though, it looked like shit... especially back then when the rich people bought the best TV's, which were just giant tube TV's, so it showed the quality even more... and then for all the normal people with normal size TV's, the widescreen thing was just like 'wtf'? lol
Thank god for DVD and blu-ray (and HD TV)
Some reasons why The Faculty is awesome...

I really love this movie but I do have a minor problem with the movie: Why is Jordana Brewster hiding in a bus waiting for Elijah Wood and how did she know that Elijah would be in that bus trying to hide from the aliens in that scene near the end? I still don't understand it.
I recently caught this on Syfy or something and forgot how fun it was. Its really just a goofy movie with a really fun cast, just going for it. Jon Stewart as the teacher was awesome.
You could have added Satanico Pandemonium on your #1 :) and yes, that album is a classic!

4. - Sounds like some serious HALLOWEEN 6/JASON GOES TO HELL/NEW NIGHTMARE shit right there.
Hahahahahaha!!! These are hilarious, and your numbers 2 & 3, especially, made me LOL!
The Fast and the Furious

Upcoming movies I am eagerly anticipating...

Can't wait for both of these. I refuse to read any more articles about them, trying to go in as open minded/fresh as possible.
Yeah I'm hoping Prometheus is able to capture some amazing Gigerian imagery, I don't even care if it's CGI...Ridley Scott at least knows how to use it.
BEFORE THEY WERE STARS...They had bit parts on Arrested Development!

Just want to give Lynch some credit as she stood out in two of Christopher Guest's movies before AD oh and don't forgett Ann 2 (Mae Withman) who later became Evil Ex #3 in Scott Pilgrim :D
Guidelines to a Terminator marathon.

Thoughts.

Hahahaha!!! Nite Owl hit the nail on the head with that one! Anyway, you should post lists like this more often.. you're hilarious, dude! :-D
Just focus on walking. Left foot right foot... actually don't- one time I tried to just walk normally and focus on doing so and I have no idea what I was doing with my feet but it wasn't 'normal' walking by any means lol
10 reasons you should watch The Venture Bros.

I will also be honest and say I'm not really all that much into Adult Swim to begin with. I don't get The Cartoon Network anyway and I got into Venture Bros. through DVD. But the show is sooooo worth checking out! For really really reals!
This is my favorite Adult Swim show by a mile. Agree on everything on here - especially #4.

24. WHAAAAAT? Another all-time favorite <3 Eliza Kazan
25. OH MY GOD HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT? It's pretty good.
Some of these are a little outdated so don't feel bad. The ones I personally think you NEEED to see are 8,16 & 25. 8 1/2 ia bit overated IMO but still great, that one you have to get that film nerd crad back!
Ive only seen 2 of them...dont feel bad.
Kramer vs. Kramer and Annie Hall
both are good.
If you like 500 days of summer then you should like Annie Hall.
Quotes I'm always quoting

Based on a list by randychico
I love most of the quotes on here, buuuuuuuuuut... if your #1 quote had a face, I would punch it! hahaha Sorry, dude. Meesa hate Jar Jar!
The thing about #1 is that I always say it by accident. Like, I guess I'm trying to say "okie dokie" but it comes out "okie day."
A little ashamed, but it's #1 for a reason, it happens quite a bit.
Best Horror Films of the 1990s

"Complete Series" DVD sets I'd like to get...

Oscar nom wishlist

Never say never, The Academy is nominating 5 films for Best Visual Effects this year and Scott Pilgrim is one of 7 finalists in the running for a nomination. It really could happen...
Reeeeeaaaally? Well, that's good to know... there's some hope in this world, after all! :-)
I think it has a chance in the sound categories, even more so than the effects
Favourite movies starting with each letter of my name

Empire was almost on my list but I felt bad putting it under S for Star Wars
Great songs nominated for a Golden Globe but not an Oscar!

*won the award
Also, while searching some of these songs and the category for the award I learned that the Eric Clapton song "Tears In Heaven" was nominated for a Golden Globe, since it was on the soundtrack to the 1991 film RUSH. I did not know this. I didn't really want to add it to the list...somehow it feels wrong that such a personal, heartbreaking song would be slapped on to such a mediocre movie.
Awesome man! So apparently the Golden Globes do get somethings right haha My favorites are 1,3 & 7
Things the Golden Globes at least did better than the Oscars.

15. having ricky fucking gervais host. he was great last year and hopefully tonight as well
Awesome man, totally agree, especially with Jim Carrey and Steve Buscemi
My Favourite Roger Ebert Reviews (No Particular Order)

Love that he's a big proponent of Anime too.
Needs to change his tune on video games though..
Best of 2010

Macgruber was hilarious. Well worthy of any top 10 list. More people need to see it.
Revised, as much as I love McGruber and Toy Story 3, they are now omitted.
Top 10 best movies of 2010 (my picks!!!1) [gag list lol]

I figured it was a joke...but some of the movies on here are actually good so that's why I was a little puzzled.
Blu-rays, DVDs, and books I got for Boxing Day!

My Pre-Christmas Dinner Holiday Themed TV Show Episodes Marathon

You should probably watch Family Guy's "Road to the North Pole." It's absurd and hilarious and still very unpredictable.
That '' FRIENDS '' episode is up near the top of my faves . I agree with you on the '' FAMILY GUY '' thing , great episode, near the end of ' funny ' run . COOLIO !!
This year's American Dad christmas episode is going on my annual watch list as it was arguably one of the greatest Xmas stories ever told. Awesome list dude, loving #1.
Roles I Would Want to Play if I Was an Actor

Sequels that aren't really as horrible as everyone says (IMO, NPO, LOL)

I disagree so much with this list. except Predetor 2 that should be at the top.
I agree w/ you on Matrix Reloaded, Godfather Part III, Predator 2, Batman Forever and X-Men: The Last Stand.
Movies with really stupid twists

Planet of the Apes 2001 was a pretty stupid ending. It doesn't help that Burton doesn't even have a clue what's up with it (someone on YouTube posted the ending with Burton's commentary over it)
Sparaza was Heller, and they needed Buddy Isreals heart so that they could transplant it into Heller and he would reveal 50+ years of info on the mob or something ;{P
Best Albums of 2010

Ahh! will do! I was about to start asking what good songs had there beeen in 2010
My turn....i was thinking about doing this the other day. Thanks for the inspiration
Videos you probably don't want to purchase second-hand...

If I had to make a program schedule for a pretend TV Station using only TV shows I own in my DVD collection...

I thought about doing this with my movies & animated shows circa 1980-1995.
Even thought of a channel name - Retron
BEFORE THEY WERE STARS...They had bit parts on Roseanne!

Best Thanksgiving scenes (in non-Thanksgiving-related movies)

Loove it... but, isn't The Ice Storm a little thanksgiving related?? Still, great list :D
If these movies get remakes I would boycott them indisciminately.

If they remade BTTF with Justin Bieber, I would just stop watching movies all together. Then they cant shit on my childhood anymore.
GHOSTBUSTERS: THE NEXT GENERATION!
Starring Justin Bieber, Joe Jonas and Zac Effron!!! xD
The MOVIE was better than the BOOK (IMO)

JAWS, God yes! The affair between Hooper and Ellen was so ridiculously boring. To be fair, I haven't read it since grade 9 though. Now I'm in grade 29.
Sequels I like to ignore

Batman & Robin has to be up there as one of the worst big budget commercial films ever made...in terms of quality not box office. Painfully brutal.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles was legit. I stuck with the show to the end of season 2. It only improved over time and was substantially better than Terminator 3 and Salvation. Far from a TV sci-fi classic like Battlestar or Babylon 5 but had the balls to take itself seriously as opposed to fighting one ridiculous robot after another every week.
Favorite Film of Each Year since the Year I was Born

Games I own for the NES

Nice... I recall Super Spike V Ball as a great 4 player game. Ninja Gaiden and Super Sprint are good times... I once saw a guy beat Jason in Friday the 13th, I was very impressed... I thought it was damn near impossible.
You bought the Nightmare on Elm Street game wtf is wrong with you
15 what the faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack?! Like for real?! That's actually a thing?
oh and #7 hell yeah baby!
Games I own for the PS3

Derek, if you like those you should play God of War 3. What do you think of Ghostbusters? I wasn't too crazy about it, expected more.
I'm still working on Ghostbusters, actually. I check back in with it every once in a while but it's not a game I'm super-eager to complete. Mostly because I feel like I have to play really close attention to it, as it almost works as a movie...it's really plot heavy. Not really the quality I look for in games. But for what it is, it's decent.
I thought the same thing, it would have been great as the 3rd Ghostbusters movie, but didn't work so well as a game.
Favourite Fathers (TV)

Nice, I think I chose Hank over Danny Tanner because Danny never hit anyone yet both were very tidy.
Holy Shit...Franklyn Sherman was always fuckin hilarious! Cool list man!
Best films of the 1990s

LOL...I only thought of Silence of the Lambs because I remember the night it won the Oscar...my last year of University, drunk, with a hottie friend of mine...there was much adult content to follow.
Tips on writing a review for MFC, the DEREK237 WAY!

I'm going to print this out and post it above my computer. Great list.
You do make some good points, but I really hope the 10/10 thing was a joke...the majority of the time I just look at the number rating. I'm likely to read it if someone disagrees completely with me or it's a movie I was mixed about. But if I see the same person grading on a 7-10 scale, I usually skip right over it...
Oh and NO SPOILERS! Even some things that aren't considered spoilers I consider spoilers.
If someone uses the word depressing or sad, you know a main character you like is going to die at the end.
Strange title translations on my silly French Canadian DVDs...

Cool! I should do one of these for mexican translations.. Airplane: Where's the pilot? Thelma & Louse: An Unexpected Ending....
10 things that went through my mind while watching ALIENS again for the umpteenth time

1. - I hear he died of feline AIDS, unfortunately...
2. - Yeah, those super futuristic Reebok sneakers!
4. - Yep, she tells him specifically to stay away from her. And yet she has no problem going to him once it appears that they're all fucked, lol.
6. - They covered up all her freckles to make her look Mexican-ish.
7. - Jake Lloyd. 'Nuff said.

Top 10 BlU-RAYs that popped my player's cherry.

oh okay, thanks for clarifying...some of my first blu rays i still havent even opened lol
Yeah I guess my title for the list doesn't really make sense. I mean, technically only one could have 'popped my player's cherry,' (which was Star Trek), so yeah these are just the first 10 Blu-Rays I ever bought and watched on my player. Stay tuned for my next list: "Top 10 girls I lost my virginity to."
Top 10 DVDs that popped my player's cherry.

Not 100% sure on the exact order I got these, I can't really remember, but these are definitely among the first DVDs I ever purchased. The Alien Legacy set was my very first DVD purchase. 10 years ago. Oh, how time flies.
I feel your pain on The Thing, I paid $40 for mine. That's a nice list to be sure.
Best Albums of 2009

My Favourite Superhero Movies

Thank you for including Batman Returns on your list, it's my #1 favorite comic/superhero film.
Looks like you started something Dude cause now everyones making their list, me included. Nice picks.
Guilty Pleasure TV shows
You shouldn't feel guilty for #7, I think there's a fair share of people that think that's a good sitcom. I know I do... Love that picture as well.
Yes, I think #7 is genuinely funny. Im really a sucker for sitcoms so I have no problem with the others in the list.
Good Guilty Pleasures list man! I'mma make one cause I have quite a few! Though I'm glad you admit you watch Reba because I do too, one of the funniest underrated shows out right now...
DVDs I accidentally bought the Full Screen editions of. Arg.

Ya know what really annoys me? My mom will go to the video store and rent a movie that I have suggested for her, THAT I OWN, instead of borrowing mine! Why? "Because you have that messed up version. When I watch it, I want to see the whole picture." Yes... I have tried to explain it to her.
My most 'useful' IMDb reviews.

I've written like 2 reviews there in the past 5 years so they're all really old anyway. I guess back then it was easier to get your review ranked up there. Now I just troll the message boards.
My favourite Robert Downey Jr. roles

I loved RDJ, though I have always felt that Hollywood gave him too many chances...though I guess thats what happens when your talented. Cool list man!
Yep, as soon as I read "NBK" at #1 my eyes lit up. "Live! Interviews! Wayne Gale!" Definitely my favorite too!
Best use of voiceover/narration in films (IMO)

Just my personal preferences, of course. I know I missed some big ones, like for example you may notice there is not a single Morgan Freeman-narrated movie on the list, which kind of boarders on blasphemy, doesn't it?
I love the Brian Cox voiceover in the last scene of 25th Hour. Great list!

Best Cameos (spoilers)

NOTE: While making this list, I did a google search of "Best cameos of all time" and stumbled upon a thread I started here 3 years ago, where I listed some of the cameos mentioned here, told a user to go fuck himself, and went on a strange tangent where I called Jay Leno a "class act." Oh, 2007 Derek, you're so goofy.

Best Horror Movies Of The Decade (2000-2009)

My ranking of the Halloween films

I'm glad you have (2007) at #3 and not like #9. I feel like one of the only ones these days that enjoyed Zombie's re-imagining.
I can't say I like the RZ remake, but I deff respect it and appreciate his vision =]
I enjoyed Zombie's first Halloween film for sure. But the second one I could just not get in to.
My ranking of the Friday The 13th films

I really don't get why everyone hates Jason Goes To Hell so much, that's like, one of my favorite ones. Lol, I must be alone in this. Did this awhile ago, nice to see your rankings. :]
Certainly not threezy, I've backed you up on this before. We should join forces for our JGtH love!
My ranking of the Nightmare On Elm Street films

I'm VERY happy to see the remake last. I hated that piece of shit (well the half I saw of it)...but I would put part 2 higher =P Its a guilty pleasure of mine

Yep #2 is absolutely true. Most of the time I don't notice it but it will be hard for my eyes to register images that contain a lot of red and blue. They almost pop out at me as if I were still wearing the glasses. And it's particularly bad if it's really bright out, but in that case, I'll just pop on my shades anyway. ;)
You know it never occurred to me until writing this list but maybe #2 and #4 are somehow related lol.
Hmm I wonder if that dude from Back To The Future ended up having similar problems. He must have worn those damn things for hours on end while filming.
And @Changes23, you should totally do one! It's hella fun. And we should all get to know the big ol happy MFC family a little better.
Great movies I own on VHS but have yet to upgrade to DVD or Blu-Ray

Awesome list!! I think I can pull of a Top Ten list... I even have copies of films on beta!
I was just really into collecting at an early age I guess. And like an idiot I still would buy VHS movies even though I knew they were on the way out, simply because they were a little cheaper.
I still prefer to watch my Star Wars Trilogy on tape. Gives it even more of a nostalgic feel.
Best of the decade (2000-2009)

Great list. I've actually been in a Wonder Boys kick the past few weeks. It's a terrific picture. Very underrated.
