I thought the remake was terrible...maybe I'll swap it out with something else. I forgot to put Pontypool on this list...I still wanna check that out.

DARTHPAUL64's BLOG #4: Why you should enjoy Transformers: Dark of the Moon

O-transformers-dark-of-the-moon-trailer

It is supposed to be fun! Leave your brain at the door and just enjoy watching explosions, car chases, and fighting robots for a couple of hours. Sure, character development and plot can be achieved in any movie, but in the end, is that what we really care about in a Transformers movie? No. If you are worried about all that "mumbo-jumbo," then go watch something that was nominated for a million and a half awards last year. Every movie is graded under the same criteria even though a lot of movies are vastly different from one another. This way of "reviewing" gives a ton of films a bad rap simply because some critics will automatically write a film off solely because of the genre of the film is one they are not fond of. Transformers: Dark of the Moon was about a half hour too long and some scenes/characters were completely pointless, but the visuals and action sequences alone make it all worth sitting through. By now, everyone should know Michael Bay loves "extra cheese," whether the consumer wants it or not; just let the man do his thing because in the end he comes out with a pretty entertaining movie. Not every film has to be "best picture- worthy" to be a good movie, and I could sit here and throw out countless titles that are worse than any of Bay's works. The internet has given everyone who "likes" movies the chance to be a critic, and once a small blog or forum gets a general consensus of a movie, they go crazy and begin to "hate" on a film because it is the "cool" thing to do. Don't get me wrong, if you didn't like "Transformers," that is fine with me, but there are plenty of other films out there that deserve just as much bashing, if not more than this fighting robot franchise. I'm a fan of all three Transformers films, and if Bay signed on to do another three, I'd be in theater for all 3 of them. These movies are supposed to be seen on the biggest screen, with the most ridiculous-looking 3D glasses, along with an XL coke and an oversized tub of popcorn in hand. It's supposed to be fun! The end.

averaging the scores like that doesn't make sense though, there are only 224 pro critics while there are 60,137 non-pro critics, averaging them would only make sense if there were equal amounts of people in both groups no?

darthpaul64
darthpaul64 at 01:52 PM Jul 13

True. But maybe pro critics scores can be weighted more heavily than the non-pros. Than it kinda makes sense.

It doesn't really matter. I enjoyed it as well as the other two movies. It's fun.

WP-DFA
WP-DFA at 04:28 PM Jul 13

I enjoyed it as well, but I disagree with what you said about the pro's opinions compared to the non-pros. What sets them apart? What really makes a 'professional' critic other than he gets payed for writing reviews? They're just opinions, in total there were 60,361 (224 + 60,137) opinions in total, each of them just as valuable as the next, no matter if the one before gets printed in a magazine -- it doesn't make that guy (or gals) opinion more accurate, truthful or valuable than the guy (or gal) who published their review on their facebook or blog, or who never even posted it at all. Why are we putting these people's (the 'professional' critics) opinions on a pedestal? That's all I'm saying.

DARTHPAUL64's BLOG #3: Why The Hangover Part II sucks

The-hangover-part-2-movie-poster1

I could sum this one up with one sentence: "It's the same exact movie as the first one, just not funny." The jokes, plot, characters, and everything else are completely replicated from the first film without adding anything interesting or new to warrant a sequel. The sequel is a complete cash grab. Instead of a tooth, it's a tattoo. Instead of a baby, it's a monkey. Instead of Ken Jeong as the "villain," it's Paul Giamatti. Instead of being drugged in the first one, oh wait....I wouldn't want to "spoil" it for you, if that's even possible. If I didn't get my point across, let me know and I can throw out a few more examples. There are plenty of them. I can't recall a sequel that is lazier than The Hangover Part II and I feel completely cheated that I even spent my time and money on this pile that we call a "movie." I'm not a screenwriter by any means, but I think most the writers in the business could have come up with a more clever script than the one the movie ended up with. When the third one hits theaters, expect stubborn ol' me to sit at home that Friday night because I refuse to support it. I am still a fan of the first one; I think it is one of the more funny comedies to come out in recent years. I am also a fan of Todd Phillips, but with his last two films, Due Date and The Hangover Part II, I feel like he is just milking Zach Galifianakis' brainless character he has created for every penny he can get until people grow tired of it. "It happened again." Give me a fucking break!

I don't get why it had to happen again, but I like these actors together, I dont see why they couldnt just do a completely different premise.

DARTHPAUL64's BLOG #2: Top 5 movies of 2011 so far...

Hobo_with_a_shotgun_blog

It is pretty much the halfway point of 2011, and although I have only seen 18 movies this year, I still feel the need to make some sort of "so far" list marking the "best" movies of the year to date.

1. I Saw the Devil - A brutal revenge flick about a man who reaches his boiling point after his significant other is murdered by a sadistic killer. With a half hour remaining in the film, my jaw literally dropped due to the story taking quite a surprising turn. I can easily consider it a masterpiece and it is by far the best film I have seen this year.

2. Hobo With a Shotgun - Out of all the new-age "grindhouse" films such as Machete, Black Dynamite, Death Proof, Planet Terror, this is my favorite of them all. The dialogue is almost too over the top, but it still works and adds to the entertainment of the film. In the midst of all the madness going on in "Hobo," there are a few touching moments that really make this film suprisingly endearing as well. The film gets pretty ridiculous towards the end, but by that time the viewer has already disregarded any sort of reality in the "Hobo" world and just accepts what is in front of them.

3. X-Men: First Class - An installment that revitalizes our faith in the X-men franchise. I liked how the action scenes were all earned and not forced like some summer blockbusters we see these days. There are also plenty of fine performances in this film, which is pretty rare when it comes to "super hero" movies. The climax is pretty massive in scale and wraps up everything to show the uninformed how things came about.

4. Win Win - A small and simple indie dramedy that hits every note. Great performances and a story that is easily to get wrapped up into. Next to Bridesmaids, it is suprisingly the movie responsible to making me laugh the most in the theater this year.

5. Fast Five - This franchise has definitely seen it's highs and lows. Who would have though these guys could get away with making five of these? Well I'm sure we will see at a sixth film in the next couple years and you can bet I'll be seeing it opening weekend. Fast Five may be the most entertaining film of the franchise yet, and although some of the stunts seem impossible, you forget to care within the first 15 minutes. It is pure entertainment and has enough "eye candy" for anyone to enjoy.

There you have it. I reserve the right to change the order of these or completely drop them off my end of the year list, these are just the 5 most memorable movies of the year so far in my opinion.

DARTHPAUL64's BLOG #1: Breaking the Ice

I recently heard "if you want to be a good writer, you need to write everyday." Sounds pretty harmless and more productive than some of the other things I tend to spend my time on. The subject of the writing is not so important, but I love movies so that is what the majority of my entries will be about. This is mainly for personal gain, but please feel free to read on if you have time.

The Couch Runners- May 2011: Directorial Debuts

Quentin_tarantino_film_director

The Couch Runners: darthpaul64, lordtyler912

For all of you who aren't too lazy to venture out of MFC please go to our actual page: www.thecouchrunners.blogspot.com

For now, we will only record our votes and see how many people follow along or want to be a part of it and then we may make it a little more public. For example: considering your votes into the winners of each marathon and letting others pick what marathon is next. This is basically a fun way for us to catch up on movies.

Best year in movies?

Now that the Oscars are over with as well as 2010...what do you guys think has been the best year in movies? You can go back as far as you want, but I'm only 22 so obviously I'm going to go with a year that's a little more recent. I'm sure this question has been asked before on here, but I'd like to see everyone's opinion.

My vote is 2008 and here is my top 5 for that year:
LET THE RIGHT ONE IN
THE WRESTLER
THE DARK KNIGHT
WALL-E
CLOVERFIELD

(Note that NONE of these were nominated for Best Picture.)

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is pretty amazing too.

2008, 1998, and 1994 are some of my favorites.
I love 1998 the most because of THE TRUMAN SHOW, HE GOT GAME, AMERICAN HISTORY X, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, AND A BUGS LIFE.

2010 really was a great year for movies personally. But 1999 had some of the best movies

Oh yeah 94,98,99 are all great, good calls!

But I still say 2008 was the best of the 2000s

A rough draft of my "Top 20 of 2010"

I am seeing True Grit and Black Swan this week. I also wanna catch up on a few others...look for a finalized one in the near future.

1. Kick-Ass- The most entertaining movie I've seen in quite some time.

2. The Fighter- Led by a cast of Oscar-worthy performances, The Fighter is the most satisfying movie of the year that has so much more to offer than just another boxing tale.

3. Toy Story 3- A bittersweet ending to a "story" we all grew up with and loved.

4. Inception- Caters to the Memento fans as well The Dark Knight fans; even with that said, I haven't seen anything quite like Inception.

5. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World- Kill Bill and Juno had a baby in the nintendo world; it's name was Scott Pilgrim.

6. Animal Kingdom- Unlike Goodfellas, Animal Kingdom doesn't revel in how "cool" it is to be a gangster; it actually explores how terrifying it can be.

7. Let Me In- A remake I can appreciate as much as the beloved original. It's too bad Twilight has tainted the vampire world.

8. The Town- The "one last job" story has been done before, but The Town perfected it.

9. The Social Network- Two hours of dialogue has never been more engaging.

10. Love and Other Drugs- Possibly the only "chick flick" this year with some substance that also has a believable duo at it's forefront.
_____________________________________________________________

11. The Loved Ones- A must-see for all fans of horror/revenge flicks.

12. How to Train Your Dragon- A beautiful journey through friendship and fantasy.

13.127 Hours- Danny Boyle's style and James Franco charisma are the two major components that make it possible to tell the incredible true story of Aron Ralston on screen.

14. The Disappearance of Alice Creed- It's a lot more thrilling than it's premise and trying to guess what's going to happen next is quite the challenge.

15.Shutter Island- Even though you see the "twist" coming, Shutter Island is a well-crafted thriller that demands a second viewing.

16. Buried- Ryan Reynolds keeps your attention for 90 minutes; the climax had me on the edge of my seat.

17. Frozen- Frozen has the ability to keep anyone from wanting to head up to the mountains.

18. The Kids Are All Right- A down to earth family dramedy with great performances to supplement it.

19. I Love You Phillip Morris- A romantic comedy that is actually romantic and funny...in a gay sort of way.

20. Alice In Wonderland- Tim Burton made me feel like I was personally submerged in that rabbit hole and created a perfect "Wonderland" world.

WEEKLY RUMBLE #11

Weekly_rumble_11

Two movies this year that both paid homages to nerds. To me, they were two of the most entertaining movies in quite some time and were both visually stunning. Are you gonna side with the super heroes or the gamers?

SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD vs. KICK-ASS

Weekly Rumble #10

Pretty simple this week. Two comic book trilogies that followed a similar pattern...I'm making this assumption by popular opinion.

1st movie good
2nd movie great
3rd movie meh

Which Trilogy do you prefer as a whole?

Idea sparked from fellow MFC member Karshe.

Ok fine... sorry Spidey, I love you but your movies are not that great, I had a very good time with #2 even then it's not that well made, while not as fun X2 is pretty solid and I don't get depressed by X3 like I do with Spidey 3. Dammit, now I need a pick me up... damm you Spiderman 3. Go X-Men, i guess.. whatever

My "27" days of Horror (I lost my drive the last week!)

Oct 1st- HATCHET II --- I'd still say the original is a bit better, but this sequel offered plenty of great kills and I really liked the ending. The only downer is the beginning gets bogged down by a familiar back story from the first one that is brought back, just more in depth. --- 7/10

Oct 2nd- THE FLY (1986) --- I thought the effects were great for an 80's film and Jeff Goldblum gives an oustanding performance. The Fly doesn't really turn into a "horror" film until the third act, where it gets a bit creepy. --- 8/10

Oct 3rd- FRONTIER(S) --- it feels like a lot of other films we have all seen, it reminded me a lot of the remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. It has some intense sequences and a badass third act. The dining room scene was easily my favorite part of the movie. I recommend this to any horror/revenge fans. --- 9/10

Oct 4th- MONSTERS --- I was expecting Cloverfield 2 and it was far from that. I was hooked for the first 15 minutes then after that I completely lost interest. I thought it was very boring and didn't really like the characters that you follow throughout the whole film. I will give the director some props for making it on a $15,000 budget though. --- 4/10

Oct 5th- ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE --- A simple slasher film with a twist. It has the whole high school vibe going, but in a pool of slashers, it doesn't stand out as anything special. Oh yeah, Amber Heard is pretty hot. --- 6/10

Oct 6th- AUDITION --- I did not love this by any means. I thought it was a little slow and took a long time to get to where it needed to be. The story was good, a little odd, but good. The third act was it's strongest point and the film definitely had some grotesque images to go along with it. --- 7/10

Oct 7th- MY SOUL TO TAKE 3D --- Lame kills, lame effects, lame 3D, lame killer, lame characters, lame jokes, mediocre twist. --- 2/10

Oct 8th THE HILLS HAVE EYES remake (re-visit) --- First off, I love the opening scene. The whole trailer torture sequence is so messed up; seriously. I know it's a movie, but I couldn't imagine going through something like that. I like the ending and think the director has got some talent. --- 8/10

Oct 9th- BLACK CHRISTMAS (original) --- I thought it was pretty good for a 70's horror film, but I wasn't amazed. The killer is creepy and I like the way they portrayed him. The ending was real solid. --- 7/10
Oct 10th- CABIN FEVER 2: SPRING FEVER --- Although it feels like more of a spoof of the original, I didn't think it was that bad for a direct to DVD sequel. The characters were complete stereotypes of a high school crowd and it was a bit cheesy. I did think it was rather funny and was still pretty entertaining. --- 5/10

Oct 11th - RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE --- This is sci-fi horror right? Well, it's got zombies in it, so it can be considered a horror film. I don't think this is as bad as everyone says it is and it may be my favorite one in the whole series (from what I can remember). As an action film, I thought it pretty good. There was some sweet action sequences and a lot of Milla Jovovich kickin' some zombie ass. The bad acting and overuse of slo-mo can be forgiven (some of the slo-mo was done tastefully.) If they decide to make a sequel, I am sure I'll be in the theater for that one as well. --- 7/10

Oct 12th- SESSION 9 --- This film definitely took it's time to get rolling, but once it did, I was hooked. It may be better on a rewatch because It gives you a lot more to think about than just your average horror movie. As for Brad Anderson, the director, I think I like Transiberrian more and I still need to watch The Machinist. Either way, I think he's got some talent and will be looking forward to any of his upcoming projects. --- 6/10

Oct 13th- THE THING --- The effects were great and I can't believe this was from the 80's. A great classic horror film that is genuinely creepy. The cast was great as well as the score. I really need to get caught up on some John Carpenter. --- 10/10

Oct 14th- THE LOVED ONES --- One of the best films of 2010 and one of the best horror films I have ever seen. The girl in it is fantastic and plays one of the most psychotic women on screen that I have ever seen. It was highly entertaining and kept going to places I wouldn't even imagine. The torture sequences were better than anything I have seen from the Saw franchise. The ending was pretty great too. I LOVED THE LOVED ONES. ---10/10

Oct 15th- CHILD'S PLAY --- I hadn't seen this since I was born so i figured I would revisit it. The origin of Chucky is a bit much, but I can forgive that. The doll has a nice blend of humor and creepiness. The little boy is excellent in this too. --- 7/10

Oct 16th- HOUSE OF WAX --- Well first off, Paris Hilton and Elisha Cuthbert are two fine looking ladies in this. I thought the characters were a bit weak and it was a little too long for a run-of-the-mill horror film. I did like the climax and thought the town/townspeople were creepy enough to keep my attention. Some bits were also a bit cliche and not very believable, but I can forgive them for trying. --- 7/10

Oct 17th- HORROR OF DRACULA --- I have no other 'Dracula' films to compare it to, but I did still find the story engaging despite it's flaws. I thought Christopher Lee did a good job of being Dracula; I just would have liked to see him have a bit more screen-time. I did also like the ending; I thought it was very climatic. I don't really like the cheesy music or stage-like acting. --- 4/10

Oct 18th - THE DESCENT (revisit) --- I mainly watched this again for the ending I never saw. This has to be one of my favorite horror films of all-time. The Descent bulids great suspense and uses very little lighting and space to create a feeling of entrapment. The use of the camera and the effects are great as well. I'm glad the director didn't
try and make CG creatures. --- 9/10

Oct 19th- JOHN CARPENTER'S HALLOWEEN --- I waited too long to see this film. First off, the camera work and music are so effective. There are so many little details and effects that Carpenter used to really make something great out of nothing. It's great to see a horror film be creepy without the overuse of blood or special effects. I love scene when Annie gets into the car to go get Paul. So great. --- 10/10

Oct 20th- INSIDE --- This has to be one of the most brutal films I have ever seen. The kills were great and there was nothing sympathetic about it. The title of this movie should have been THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Jesus Christ. I liked the reveal and the ending a lot too. --- 8/10

Oct 21st- THE VILLAGE --- I think M. Night gets too much hate. I loved the idea of it, even though it suffered from being a little slow. The "twists" all worked for me and I wasn't let down by the ending. --- 9/10

Oct 22nd- PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 --- I like where they went with this one and thought it was cool how they kept it a secret until it was released. It's a lot liked the first one and uses the same tricks to scare the auddience, but it still works. I still prefer the original just because I didn't know what to expect. --- 6/10

Oct 23d- MY BLOODY VALENTINE (original) --- Even though I saw the remake first, I still found this one quite enjoyable. It was nice to see the twist being something different then the remake. I would say it's better than FRIDAY THE 13th, but not as good as HALLOWEEN in terms of classic slashers. --- 8/10

Oct 24th- CABIN FEVER (re-visit) --- What a shitty situation. Cabin Fever is a fun and effective horror film that pays tribute to such classics like Evil Dead. I love the fact that Eli Roth made himself not only one, but two characters in the film. Oh, and that shaving scene makes me cringe like no other! I thought it was highly entertaining and a great debut for Mr. Eli Roth. I need to buy the director's cut blu ray now. --- 9/10

Oct 25th- THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (original) --- The whole "leather face" family is so creepy and one of the most disturbing families I have ever seen in film. There are some great chase sequences and for it being so old, still captured my attention incredibly well. I can't decide if I like the remake more or not --- 9/10

Oct 26th- MARTYRS --- The story itself was more intriguing than the actual film itself. The first half was very intense and had a good twist/reveal to it. The last half was drawn out and somewhat anti-climatic. I did like the very end, but all the torturing seemed a bit unnecessary. --- 6/10

Oct 27th- THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE- A great revenge flick with horror elements. It felt a lot like THE ORPHANAGE and PAN'S LABYRINTH, but was still original on it's own. 8/10
