The Two Faces of January

Two_faces_of_january_poster

Directed by: Hossein Amini
Written by: Hossein Amini
Cast: Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst, Oscar Isaac
Studio: Working Title
Genre: Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: While on vacation in Athens, a couple (Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst) find themselves on the run with the help of a American born tour guide (Oscar Issac)-

Review:

Viggo - I MISSED YOU SO MUCH (the last time I saw you was your impressive performance as Sigmund Freud in 2011's A Dangerous Method). He is more than capable here as Chester, a shifty businessman who's quickly in trouble over his head. Kirsten Dunst usually kind of annoys me but she is pretty solid here. As for Oscar Issac, between this film and Inside Llewyn Davis I can't wait to see what he brings to Star Wars Episode 7. He reminds me of a young Andy Garcia. A nice European thriller set to the backdrop of Greece, Crete, and Turkey-

True Blood has a lot to make happen in one hour to end the series.... I am really struggling to see how it is going to work.... Just don't fuck up and pull a shitty finale, I have watched this show from day one and we are owed something at least respectful to the characters. can't wait to catch the finale. OH YEAH and I have been pretty pathetic with watching films this year, due to watch the two seasons of Breaking Bad, 3 Seasons of Son's of Anarchy and current shows. I hate to say it I have even been watching a few network shows like Big Brother. My movie total is at 93 :( an ALL-TIME LOW

ONE OTHER NOTE THOUGH, I am currently working on my SECOND Feature length Screenplay, Through The Cracks. 50's tale set in Baltimore.

The Expendables 3 tanked at the box-office. Why? My theory: The PG-13 alienated the core audience (guys that are say 25 years old and up), they'll wait till the unrated Blu-Ray. And the leak nixed out the young demographic they were trying to nab in theaters - the kids downloaded it and saw it for free. All depending how it does overseas, this could be the end of The Expendables series. Too bad, as I loved Part 1 and 2 and liked this one. Wise move on Sly's part to jump into Rambo V right away. Just keep it an R man! Your audience are guys that grew up in the 80's/90's, not today's 13 years old kids.
Cochise
Cochise at 10:57 AM Aug 18

I really do not think the PG-13 rating affected it that much. Most people don't care about that. Some people are very vocal about it online, but in terms of the masses... I don't think they really care at all whether the film is R or PG-13, hell I don't think most people would even notice what the film is rated. They see the trailers, they see the action, they see the stars, they make their judgement. Most people don't judge based on an MPAA rating. If anything PG-13 brought in more people than it lost, with the additional 13-17 aged people.

The pirated copies probably had much more of an effect on it, but at the same time I don't think it has THAT much of an effect. I mean the same thing happened for X-Men Origins: Wolverine and that movie still did super well at the box office.

I definitely agree with Terror in that it was released at a dumb time. Their whole plan with the PG-13 was opening the film up to a new audience... yet they then decided to release it against Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... like what are they thinking? This could've been a perfect movie to open up the summer, an April movie or something when competition isn't nearly as intense and when Summer isn't almost over/Summer blockbuster fatigue hasn't set in.

grelber37
grelber37 at 01:07 PM Aug 18

I skipped Expendables 3 for exactly the reason you mention. The PG-13 rating was a turn-off. The unrated blu-ray will be likely the best edition of this movie.

MonsterZeroNJ
MonsterZeroNJ at 02:21 PM Aug 18

I loved it. Thought it was a blast. To me the PG-13 rating didn't harm it as it still had a really large body count. I don't think there will be an 'unrated' blu-ray as the film was filmed for PG-13 all along. Unless the add blood in post (like they did in pt. 2) and that always looks like crap

A Breakdown of an Iconic Scene

Courtesy of The Chive this morning...

“The scene that is so important and so central to me is the interrogation scene between Batman and the Joker in the film. When we were writing the script, that was always one of the central set pieces that we wanted to crack.”

“On the set, we shot it fairly early on. It was actually one of the first things that Heath had to do as the Joker. He told me he was actually pretty excited to tear off a big chunk early on, really get one of the Joker’s key scenes up in the first three weeks of a seven-month shoot. He and I both liked the idea of just diving in, as did Christian.”

“The scene starts between Gary Oldman and Heath with the lights out, and [director of photography] Wally Pfister literally just lit the scene with the desk lamp, the table lamp, and nothing else.”

“And then when the lights come on, Batman is revealed, and the rest of the scene plays out with a massive overexposure.”

“Wally overexposed like five stops, I want to say, and then printed it down to bring some of the color back in. But it’s this incredibly intense overhead light which let us move in any direction. We had a handheld camera and shot however we wanted, be very spontaneous.”

“It was a great set built into a location. It had all of the advantages of feeling that we were in a real place.”

“Nathan Crowley, the production designer, built these great mirrors and this long, tiled room that I really loved the look of; it had the feeling almost of an abattoir or something.”

“That all fed into the brutality of the scene. We wanted to be very edgy, very brutal.”

“We wanted it to be the point at which Batman is truly tested by the Joker and you see that the Joker is truly capable of getting under everybody’s skin.”

“I’m realizing this now about that scene — I haven’t thought this through before — the synthesis of all the different elements that I’m most interested in within filmmaking all come in that scene.”

Under the skin

Under_the_skin_us_poster

Directed by: Jonathan Glazer
Written by: Walter Campbell
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Paul Brannigan
Studio: Film4
Genre: Horror, Science-Fiction, Thriller
Official Site:
Plot: A gorgeous woman picks up random guys for suspicious reasons. Also, before anyone reads, there are spoilers or maybe they're not spoilers. I don't know, either way if you haven't seen it, maybe don't read it.

Review:

Under the Skin is a real work of art. Okay, someone might already be clicking the “X” button on their browser but hear me out. A lot of movies are works of art but this movie really really is working hard to be a piece of art. Like anything you watch, you have to react in some way regardless of your opinion of it. It’s not a right or a wrong way to see it. It’s your thought but the movie made you feel something. Many people seem to be very divided with this one and it’s easy to see why. That aside, Scarlett Johansson's naked in it. You got to see that so not all is lost, random person who’s probably reading this...[more]...

This review gives Schmoes further food for thought if they have seen Under the Skin. For example, everyone compares this movie to Kubrick, possibly because it emulates 2001 occasionally. However, Malick might be a comparison that had not occurred to people.

You compliment Johansson's performance rightfully. As you note, she does so much without words in this film. As you note, she makes the audience empathize with a cold character. It takes some real talent to play the character that she does in this movie.

You mention the alien's soul. Possibly, she questions her purpose and her being because she has a human-like soul. Therefore, like anyone with a soul, she must connect with others. I had not thought about that. In Under the Skin, the protagonist develops a nascent conscience. The movie's second half explores this evolution. I had examined this character development psychologically. However, a spiritual development is a most interesting one to consider.

Thanks for the review. I always enjoy reading your writing.

Amidst my TMNT marathon I didn't mention the HD transfers of the films, I did watch 'em on Blu-ray. Pic quality for the 1990 movie is...OK. Not the best but for the most part decent. In some instances there'd be a fluctuation of grain from one moment to the next. Screen would fill up with noise then clear up, pretty inconsistent. Otherwise it was awesome to see those Jim Henson costumes in full hi-res clarity, the tiny bumpy texture of the skin surface and little details like that are superb. The 2nd movie isn't better, in fact it's probably worse as far as grain goes. III is easily the cleanest, unfortunately it's the worst film. They're not much better than the DVD transfers quite honestly. Steve Barron has said that release of his movie more faithfully portrays his vision, as apparently they've upped the brightness for Blu. These films have been packaged across several different releases. Probably all the same transfers but I just wonder. Anyone happen to know?
