PROS:

+ Toothless is just awesome. He's adorable and he's badass. They really made me feel for character in a way I haven't felt in years and years
+ great varied visuals
+ fun, fresh story and universe
+ cool characters, both human and dragon alike
+ great voice work from a fantastic cast
+ pretty edgy for an animated film in a few areas, also pretty dark

CONS:

- while I loved it initially, it wasn't as great the second and third times around
- the dragon design is too cartooney and silly for the most part. Very, very few of them actually seem mean, menacing or ferocious, instead just seem goofy, which takes away from their impact and the impact of certain scenes in the movie.
- the climax is disappointing, a great concept for a climax but once again design gets in the way. The big dragon at the end once again looked goofy when it should've looked scary. It should've made a big impact but fell flat unfortunately, instead of looking like something from Reign of Fire which it should have, it looked like something from a saturday morning cartoon.

OVERALL:

it's an entertaining movie and a great new world to jump into, for the most part it's technically well made but is troubled by some of the design choices in terms of the look of many of the dragons, which takes away from their impact and with that, the movie's impact. Originally would've given this movie an 8 when I first saw it, but after a few more viewings the score has to come down to a 7 for the reasons above. Still, looking forward to the sequel very much. Recommended.
