Navy Seals is a fun movie plain and simple, but it's also one that's really flawed.
The movie is in the same vein as Top Gun. It's cheesy, it's funny, it's fun. However the one area where Navy Seals misses the mark that Top Gun didn't is the drama area, none of the emotion of the events come through due to the odd tonal shifts of the movie and perhaps most disappointing is the story, which is probably the most throwaway story I've ever seen. It just feels so unimportant and uninteresting, it's there just to be there and is quite generic and flat.
Where this movie shines though is with Charlie Sheen. His character is an absolute blast in every scene, even though for some reason he plays second fiddle to Michael Biehn's character and his story line which is unfortunate. Still, his character makes the movie worth a watch alone. That coupled with the other high points, the great super-cheesy 80's synthesizer score (and hair metal tracks) and some pretty solid action scenes make for a fun, lighthearted (though sometimes too serious) cheese fest.
Overall it's just a fun movie. It's flawed in a bunch of places, but it does one thing right and that it entertain. It's not the best movie out there but for the cheese factor and the fun factor, it's worth a watch. Recommended.
