Review:

After years and years I finally caught one of my favourite movies again.

Unfortunately it wasn't as awesome as I remember it, like most movies that you loved but haven't seen in a while, they're always better in your head. That's not to say it's not still entertaining, far from it, but there were just certain parts I remembered as being cooler, such as the final dogfight sequence, which I remembered being a lot bigger than it actually is.

The script is very well written, and although simplistic really comes through in terms of impact of dialog with great memorable serious lines throughout. The comedy as works really well as well, and still holds up today. However there are a few corny and sometimes odd dick references that seem unintentional, aside from the ones that were actually meant to be jokes, but all in all it just adds to the charm of it all.

What makes this movie amazing though is the music. Just an absolutely phenomenal theme song and score based off it, complimented by memorable and fun 80s songs that just get you in the mood for flying and having fun. This is really a movie that's cheesy at it's heart but more than anything just wants to have fun, and wants the viewer to have fun and that's what it does -- it entertains. Perhaps also a movie that could've only been made in the 80's as well, if they made a movie like this nowadays it the music would be subpar and bland, the actors and chemistry wouldn't be as good, the story would be over complicated and in short, it just wouldn't be this fun.

Overall it's still a great movie, with a solid script that hits a few unintentional bumps in the road but ultimately recovers every time. The actors all do a great job throughout. The duo of Cruise and Edwards is great but maybe even moreso is the supporting cast of characters such as the ones played by Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside and James Tolkan. It'll make you laugh, it'll make you excited, it'll be you sad and more than anything it'll make you just have fun. Highly recommended.
