Finally got around to seeing this film and am actually pretty disappointed I didn't get a chance to see this sucker on the big screen.
The movie is one that could've easily gone downhill quick, one that could have easily been doomed from the start or fell apart as soon as it began if it had bad, or even mediocre direction behind it. However James Mangold does a brilliant job here by not only bringing and holding all the pieces together, but also amping it up and giving the audience quite the above average treat.
The performances all around are great, with varied characters but more importantly layered characters, from the ones with the most screentime to the ones with the least, they always manage to have shape to them. The score is fantastic and really adds to the experience as well.
Overall I had a blast with this movie. It was somewhat simplistic in plot, but the script was intriguing, well written and just fun. The performances and music were great and the action was violent, well set up and well shot. All in all the movie came down to the direction, and James Mangold did a terrific job putting this all together, a movie that could've easily fell apart immediately, but was instead held together above and beyond because of the great direction. Recommended.
