2011 Golden Schmoes Thoughts

1. Very surprised to see that Harry Potter did not make it into Favorite Movie category. I didn't nominate it, but it sounded like it was going to be a shoe in.
2. Does Transformers 3 and Hangover 2 really meet the criteria to be considered overrated? I think they are pretty accurately rated by the general audience
3. I love that Drive made it into both Overrated and Underrated categories
4. Damn, Stake Land got no love in the Horror movie category
5. Nice to see Fassbender, Levitt, Nolte, Mulligan (although I thought she was better in Shame), and Olsen get some acting love.
6. Jessice Chastain gets shafted in all 3 performance categories (including breakthrough). Her Take Shelter co-star Michael Shannon got shafter too. Damn! I really thought the Schmoes would have more love for them.
7. In the best action sequence, most memorable scene, and best line categories, only 1 of my nominees each made it.
8. The best line category all around I find to be pretty forgettable
9. I especially wasn't a fan of the Drive quote that got picked.
10. C'est la vie. I am mostly griping for the sake of griping. Don't take me too seriously

#4 Holy shit! You noticed that omission too. Maybe, Stake Land is more for heavy-duty, hardcore horrorheads.
#3 I noticed the same as you did. Apparently, Drive is a very good film to discuss.
#8 "Noooo!" to quote Caesar
#1 Now that you mention it, Deathly Hallows's exclusion surprises greatly. MFC has consistently called the final Potter the best of 2011.
#6 Yeah, Schmoes should like Chastain. She is in our favorite movies; she kicks ass; and, she's pretty. Chastain is even quite good in Texas Killing Fields (if someone needs to see her in more work).

I dont think enough people got a chance to see Tinker Tailor. It just opened up in my local theater 2 weeks ago. When I saw it, I had to drive 30 minutes away.

5. Watlz in here, dressed like some sort of cattle rapist, waiving a cleaver, and reeking of what I hope to God is meat, and that's all you have to say?

Lucille
1. I have a plan to stave off intruders [holds up an air horn and a fire poker] First I blow him then I poke him.
2. Well, apparently, mood-altering medication leads to street drugs. That's what this very handsome young doctor said on the Today Show. [That was Tom Cruise, the actor.] They said he was some kind of scientist
3. (Regarding a gay protest) Everything they do is so dramatic and flamboyant. It just makes me want to set myself on fire.
4. I don't know. Maybe it's because I went off my post-partum medication. [You were still taking that? You had Buster thirty-two years ago.] And that's how long I've been depressed about him
5. [Hi, mom! Good news, I have the entire afternoon free.] Oh really? Did "nothing" cancel?
6. If it's an idiot on a scooter in the middle of the night, it must be Gob
7. Oh who knows what they were saying? It's probably because a seal ate his hand. Apparently, the army is giving out medals for being food now.
8. Buster! Stop playing with Mother's rape horn. Yes, I have a rape horn, Michael, because you took away my mace.
9. How much could a banana cost? Ten dollars?
10. Michael, the little Korean is here, and I don't know what to do with him. At least I think it's a him. You've got to strip them down to next to nothing before you could even tell.

Random Thoughts About Southland Now That I Am Caught Up

1. The production value and quality of content definitely went up after their move to TNT
2. The cast varies from an ok to awesome job. Its rarely categorically bad.
3. It is a strange mix between single serving tv (like Law and Order) and seasonal serial tv (The Shield). It makes for a crowd pleaser.
4. I hate Regina King's most recent partner.
5. I'm guessing the lack of focus (multiple lead characters in multiple plotlines) has probably made it hard for audiences to invest
6. Kevin Alejandro will be missed.
7. I hate C Thomas Howell
8. This is Shawn Hatosy's best role. It might not be saying much, but I think his character is really good and I look forward to his character development
9. Action sequences are more than decent considering its tv.

@cerealkiller-I accidentally spoiled Christopher Meloni's departure from Law & Order: SVU for another schmoe on here. Even though his departure was posted on various sites including this one months before the 13th season premiere, it wasn't known to this person. I don't want anyone getting upset at you, I wasn't trying to be pushy. I'm sorry that it came out that way.

@Suit Sorry. I found it horribly contrived and inconsistently acted. Beyond my own contempt for the Texas football cult community, I found, outside of the Chandler and Gilford characters, they followed (and seemed to prefer to follow) characters I didnt care about namely Street, Rigs, Tyra, Smash, and Lilah. Their stories made me want to rip my hair out of my head.

1. When you found out I was Jewish, you invited me to a 'pool party' that turned out to be a Baptism.

3. I'm not a relaxed person Britta. I think ahead. I prepare. I don't improvise my life like Caroline Decker, who probably has really bad credit and an unfinished mermaid tattoo.
4. It's called a stress headache. I got my first one when I was four.
5. That African American police chief character Abed was playing is right, we should have worked as a team
6. [mocking Britta] Oh, I obviously don't need boys for anything. That's why I wear stripper boots during the day and eat only celery and mustard for lunch.
7. I was so unpopular in high school, the crossing guards used to lure me into traffic!
8. He's acting like the impression of him we do behind his back.

Random Observations on Mad Men Not That I Am All Caught Up

1. Jon Hamm and Elizabeth Moss are pretty much the only actors who don't act like '60s parodies. Jared Harris is pretty good too actually. I am glad he became part of the main cast.
2. Pete Campbell has such an insufferable voice pattern. Luckily I think we are supposed to hate him so it works.
3. Betty is a bitch. I hope something bad happens to her.
4. I hope Sal makes a return. Despite them laying his feminity on pretty thick, he was an enjoyable character to watch.
5. Early on in the series, the allusions to modern day were tacky. Saying "next you'll say smoking will kill me" type stuff makes me cringe
6. The episodes that capture historical events are excellent
7. I feel like they keep bringing up women's deodorant and how women would rather use their man's. I'm waiting for that episode where someone comes up with "Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman" slogan
8. I was also missing Paul Kinsey last season. I hope he comes back in some capacity. Maybe as working for a client of SCDP.
9. Hamm's identity issues are one of the best recurring plotpoints. The scenes with the original Mrs. Draper were charming and heartfelt.
10. The show is almost entirely made of talking and the episodes fell much longer than 40-45 minutes Netflix told me they were. Regardless, the lack of action has not stopped it from being completely engrossing.

Random/Dorky/Embarrassing Facts About Me

2. I feel an obligation to see every comic book adapted film

4. I still watch cartoons, especially if they are based on comics
5. I am a lazy comic reader. I very rarely stray from DC and Marvel
6. Even though I consider myself a geek, many geek things escape me including: Dr. Who, Lord of the Rings, most anime except for Cowboy Bebop, and expanded Star Wars/Star Trek novels
7. I refused to watch horror movies because I was too scared until like half way through high school, maybe later.
8. Any free time I have, I daydream action sequences between my favorite superheroes
9. I am socially inept when it comes to the opposite sex. So fucking embarrassed about that

Just the fact that these sequels are in the works makes him somewhat of a go to guy for sure, otherwise they wouldn't be greenlit if they didn't think the movies would turn a profit or that he could carry a movie/action flick. All of them have been really successful especially on video. the first time he talked about Riddick 3? uh... dude, they're already filming it?

Do not agree with Goss and Adkins being modern day action heroes in the slightest. They have potential but haven't put out the quality movies yet though some of them have had, like them potential. If you're saying a Twisted Metal movie would be direct to video that's just crazy talk, Sony would never let a full fledged live action movie from one of their first party franchises be handled in such a way. They're either gonna go big with it, or go home.

cerealkiller182
cerealkiller182 at 03:18 PM Nov 22

Riddick already filming? The only news I can find on it is they offered actors part with no confirmations that they'd take it dated Oct 31st and Nov 2nd. Before that they were supposed to start filming over the summer but got delayed to TBA date.

You also need to look up what a summer blockbuster is, because a low budget surprise hit released before the big summer push is not a summer blockbuster. To say Vin Diesel is a go to guy for summer blockbusters is factually incorrect because he does not star in summer blockbusters.

The quality of Goss and Adkins movies does not excuse the fact that the two are working actors appearing in action movies. They are absolutely modern day action heroes. This isnt the 80s where action movies are the best thing and everyone knows the actors involved. Its a really good chance that the next super hero will probably also do a romantic comedy, so there is no go to action hero.

And yes, if Twister Metal movie is going to be made it will be either a DTV or DTV quality. The concept does not lend itself to being much better. Its about crazy people killing each other with cars. It is bound to be rated-R, and will never have enough money to look the way it should. It could be more extravagant, but that would certainly be a surprise, not an expectaiton

I'm starting to think you simply are granting modern day acton movies with way more clout than they actually have.

WP-DFA
WP-DFA at 03:40 PM Nov 22

yeah they were filming last I read. A summer blockbuster is really just a big action blockbuster/popcorn flick which Fast Five was.

They may be action actors, but they haven't achieved action hero status from my point of view. They could still do it, but haven't got there yet.

Like I said there's no way Sony would allow it to be a low budget dtv movie, they're either going big time or nothing at all. It could definitely work as a full fledged theatrical flick, Death Race is a very good example of how it could be done.

10 Aspects of DC's new 52 I Don't Like

1. The Green Lantern and Batwoman titles are just business as usual, while everyone else had to get some kind of reboot
2. Barry Allen and Clark Kent have lost their love interests despite Iris and Lois being long considered each hero's "one and only."
3. Tim, Connor, Cassie, and Bart of the Teen Titans who had one of my favorite friendships in DCU are now strangers
4. Green Arrow is basically Marvel's Ultimate Hawkeye
5. They are making Cyborg a founding member of the JLA instead of a Teen Titan who earned his spot.
6. Wally West, Black Lightning, and all the Batgirls that came after Barbara seem to not exist.
7. Martian Manhunter has been estranged from the rest of the 52 and made a member of Stormwatch.
8. Batwing wreaks of PC cash grab while preexisting black heroes get pushed aside for the Steel/War Machine of the Bat-family
9. Batman and Catwoman don't know each others identities implying that their tumultuous on-again, off-again romance is just beginning again rather than reaching a resolution
10. Starfire's innocent naivity has been warped into sexual promiscuity
WalkAway
WalkAway at 12:26 PM Nov 08

There was nothing about Batwoman TO reboot. She barely had anything to begin with.

dead anchoress
dead anchoress at 12:34 PM Nov 08

Dude, there is so much to love about The New 52. The Batwoman, Catwoman, Animal Man, Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. books have been amazing and Batgirl is the shit. I don't know what you were expecting but we're only about 3 issues into each series. Give it some time.

cerealkiller182
cerealkiller182 at 01:49 PM Nov 08

@WA, my point wasn't why didn't these books get a reboot, its why did all these others have to, espcially with how arbitrarily each of the characters' clocks were wound back.

@DA, this is not a condemnation of the entire concept. I have enjoyed a number of the books. Frankly, except for Batgirl, the books you mention have really not been that affected by the reboot. They are all directions the books could have went regardless of overall continuity.

Asking me to give it time just sounds silly though. If you give it time it just becomes the DCU. The problem is they so arbitrarily restarted characters at completely different aspects in their lives that logistically the concept has weak points. I mean Barry and Iris, Batman and Catwoman, and Clark and Lois barely know each other, yet Batman is on his fourth sidekick and Hal Jordan still has his 40+ years of backstory.

My thoughts on DC's 52 Part 3

1. All-Star Western #1 - Good Jonah Hex story with ok art. 1860-ish Gotham City isn't really the Old West
2. Aquaman - Its a cool book. A great portrayal of Aquaman. I hope it brings a level of concept and mythos that Johns brought to Green Lantern
3. Batman: The Dark Knight - I really dig Daniels art, but not always his writing. It seems out of sync with the rest of the universe. Plus how many Bat-books do you really need.
4. Blackhawks - What the GI Joe movie should have been. Way more charm and personality. Probably stick around for a little while.
5. The Flash - It felt so nuetered, and I am super bummed by the apparent dismissal of Wally West. By the point they decided to bring Barry back, I found Wally to be more interesting. The whole sidekick graduation angle is very interesting.
6. The Fury of Firestorm - Meh, I'm going to save my money
7. Green Lantern: New Guardians - A meh issue but I want to see where its going.
8. I, Vampire - Looked like a Twilight bandwagoner. Read like a mix of classic vampire romanticism and modern horror. I'll stick with the first arc.
9. Justice League Dark - Very much looking forward to the rest of this series
10. Savage Hawkman - More interesting than I thought it would be.
11. Superman - This was good. Not great, but good. Kinda pissed at how they erased the Clark and Lois relationship though.
12. Teen Titans - Like Tim Drake, but they changed so much of Cassie and Conner. I guess I'll check it out.
13. Voodoo - One of the least interesting books to come out of the relaunch.
14. For money sake, I am going to have to cut way more.

My thoughts on DC's 52 Part 2

1. Batwoman - Too meh and I need to save some money (be prepared for this excuse)
2. Deathstroke - Too meh and I need to save some money
3. Superboy - Its not the Connor that I grew to love, but it may be interesting
4. Batman - Really good, loved the interaction between the Robins
5. Birds of Prey - I don't know most of these characters. Wheres Huntress and Lady Blackhawk. At least give me Shiva or Misfit.
6. Blue Beetle - Too meh and I need to save some money
7. Captain Atom - It seems they are trying to be more like Doc Manhattan's power set but with the modern Cap's mind. Unfortunately it is also sniping a lot of Firestorms powers
8. Catwoman - It was pretty wild and sexy. I might stick around although I miss the Gotham Girls trio
9. DC Universe Presents - I believe this is going to be one-off arcs spotlighting different characters. My purchases will probably be based on what characters are the focus
10. Green Lantern Corps - Its Guy and John so I'll stick around, but they need more to happen
11. Legion of Super Heroes - Too meh and I need to save some money
12. Nightwing - I don't like the idea of Dick going back to Nightwing so soon. I was enjoying him as Batman. This nonetheless was a good book
13. Red Hood and the Outlaws - Some funky art. Always like this rough around the edges kind of teams so I am going to stick with it for now.
14. Supergirl - Too meh and I need to save some money
15. Wonder Woman - Great first issue. Definitely moving forward with this.
16. The Flash - Did they really need to break up Flash and Iris. Oh well, i'll stick with it hoping it gets better.

16. Deathstroke - It was pretty good, but lacking something. I think Im going to drop it.

22. Mr. Terrific - Meh!
23. Red Lanterns - Had some of the least expectations for this book but it may end up surprising

I'd have to go with:
1) Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrell. It was his first movie that I saw, and it still resonates today.
2) Snatch
3) Sherlock Holmes
4) RocknRolla
5)Revolver - just because it's 5th on my list doesn't make it bad, don't sleep on this movie.
always going to be last) Swept Away - the sex scenes were done good, but other than that this movie was garbage, especially for Guy Ritchie.

Thoughts on Rescue Me Now That its Over

1. What started out as a game changing drama definitely did not keep the same level of quality throughout the entire run
2. The chemistry between the firefighters was some of the best on television
3. Lt. Kenny Shea is one of the best TV characters ever
4. Tommy's sex life was one of the worst parts of the show because if he wasn't with Janet or Sheila, he was considered irresistable. Ugh!
5. John Scurti, Daniel Sunjata, Dean Winters, and Steve Pasquale really entertained me and I hope they get work elsewhere
6. This show needed more Maura Tierney
7. I thought it was weird that they eventually forogt about Billy Warren. I think they mentioned him a few times.
8. I always thought they did quiet ending moments really well.
9. This show was a little too kill crazy. When they got too far in a dramatic funk, they seemed to kill someone
10. The actualy firefighting has been some of the most intense scenes I have ever seen
Bitto529
Bitto529 at 09:56 AM Sep 08

1. True
2. True
3. True
4. It was due to the fact he was a firefighter and the stereotypical bad boy.
5. DW is "Mayhem" in those Allstate insurance commercials
6. You got that right
7. They did mention him a few times after his death. They also kind of neglected to mention Chief Jerry Reilly more than they should have
8. Yes
9. It's part of the job
10. Good call

1. True. Although it wasn't consistent in the latter years, it did have some very memorable episodes in between.
2. Hell yes.
3. Damn right.
4. When you're not only the star of the show but one of the lead writers too, well...um, can you blame the guy?
5. I agree on all counts especially Winters.
6. Tierney was just a piece of the awesomeness that this show had with guest stars. From Michael J. Fox to Susan Sarandon, cameos were always entertaining.
7. Yeah, that's true. And Fineberg's memory loss from earlier in the season just flat out disappeared there at the end.
8. Cue that music and grab the kleenex. It's my allergies, I swear.
9. Yes, at the end of the first 4 seasons, they killed off a member of the Gavin family.
10. Great special effects for an FX TV show.

Outstanding television.

"Hotties" That Are Overrated In My Opinion

1. Paris Hilton - She is disgustingly skinny, dresses like a dirty whore, has one of the worst personalities ever, and obviously fakes her high pitched voice
2. Lindsay Lohan - There was a time, but that time is long long LONG gone
3. Eva Green - Her smile makes me cringe
4. Cameron Diaz - I just dont think she is aging gracefully and has really ruined her somewhat curvy body from The Mask that gained her fame
5. Fergie - She has an amazing set of stems but suffers sever butter-face
6. Malin Ackerman - I feel like her head is dis-proportioned to her body and her hair is always sitting on her head awkwardly
7. Mandy Moore - Incredibly boring
8. Angelina Jolie - I was asked to guess her age once, I was almost 10 years off, that kind of ruined it for me.
9. Jessica Alba - I suppose I see the appeal, but everytime I see her I care less and less. I dont think she ever looks comfortable in her own skin.
10. Evangeline Lilly - I think she is pretty, one of the best smiles I have ever seen, but some people are a little too crazed about her. So I think shes overrated but not "not hot"

Top 10 Dave Chappelle Quotes (Happy Birthday Dave)

Dave_chappelle
1. The girl says "Oh uh-uh, wait a minute! Wait a minute! Just because I'm dressed this way does not make me a whore!" Which is true. Gentlemen, that is true. Just because they dress a certain way doesn't mean they are a certain way. Don't ever forget it. But ladies, you must understand that is fucking confusing. It just is. Now that would be like me, Dave Chappelle, the comedian, walking down the street in a cop uniform. Somebody might run up on me, saying, "Oh, thank God. Officer, help us! Come on. They're over here. Help us!" "Oh-hoh! Just because I'm dressed this way does not make me a police officer!" See what I mean?
2. Somebody broke into my house once but I didn't want to call em, Uhhh uhhh. House was too nice! And in a real nice house they'd never believe I lived in it... "He's still here! Thump! Ohhh my god! Open and shut case Johnson! I saw this once before when I was a rookie. Apparently this n**** broke in and hung pictures of his family everywhere. Well... lets sprinkle some crack on him and get out' a here."
3. Every group of brothers should have at least one white guy in it. Im serious for safety, cuz when the shit goes down someone is gonna need to talk to the police.
4. From now on, I smoke weed exclusively with white people. You got good weed conversation. All white people talk about when they get high is other times that they got high. I could listen to that shit all night. "Dude, remember at Franks last week, I was fucking smashed, man." And catalogs everything they drink. "I had two shots of Jager, tequila, four bong hits, man... beer, cheeseburger." That shit is great. The only bad part is... You cannot pass out around white people. Every time white dudes pass out around each other... They always do some borderline-gay shit when the guys are sleeping.
5. I don't even know why people listen to me. I'll say anything. I've done commercials for Coke and Pepsi. I don't give a fuck what comes out of my mouth. I say what it takes. Whatever it takes, thats what I'm saying. If you wanna know the truth, cant even taste the difference. Surprise! All I know is, Pepsi paid me most recently so... it tastes better.
6. Remember that commercial for Sunny Delight... when all the kids run in from outside playing... and they all run to the fridge? "All right, I got some purple stuff, some Sunny D." As soon as they say Sunny D all the kids go, Yeah! Watch the black kid in the back. If you see that commercial, look at that black kid. He'd be like, "I want that purple stuff."
7. I almost protested the war in the beginning. Almost. Till I saw what happened to them Dixie Chicks. I said, Fuck that. If they'll do that to three white women they will tear my black ass to pieces.
8. I turned on Sesame Street. And I was, like: "Oh, good. Sesame Street. This is much better cause now he'll learn how to count and spell." But now I'm watching it as an adult and I realize that Sesame Street teaches kids other things. It teaches kids how to judge people. And label people. That's right. They got this one character named Oscar. They treat this guy like shit the entire show. They judge him right to his face. "Oscar, you are so mean. Isn't he, kids?" "Yeah. Oscar, you're a grouch!" He's, like, "Bitch, I live in a fucking trash can! I'm the poorest motherfucker on Sesame Street. Nobody's help in' me."
9. And we're watching Pepe Le Pew when I'm old now and I'm like Ohhh god! What kind of fucking rapist is this guy?!?
10. And I didn't know he was taking me to the ghetto at first. I started looking out the window, see gun store, gun store, liquor store, gun store, where the fuck you taking me?

It's nice to see some JRE fans in here. Best stoner podcast on the net.

I'd probably put Duncan Trussell as my favorite. He sounds so childlike and goofy, yet crazy smart at the same time.
