I think I am going to attempt to have a running list of all the debut movies I see this year and rank it an its entirety instead of doing a top 20. Mostly I want to do this because I am bored now, but hopefully I find something to do between now and the end of the year.

Monthly Cereal Box Award: Liam Neeson

Liam

I had this idea a long time ago to kind of make a bullshit lifetime achievement award awarding my favorite people and maybe even characters in movies and tv. My first thought was mock magazine covers, but than I caught a glimpse of a wheaties box in the supermarket that had a famous athlete on it. Considering my MFC handle, I figured it was a better idea. This will technically be for January in honor of Liam Neeson actually releasing a good movie in the movie industry's usual dumping ground month. Besides, I don't think anyone on MFC would be crying about awarding Liam Neeson with anything anyway.

By the way, if I do continue doing this get ready for some truly shoddy photoshop work.

Review: Hunger

Hunger-criterion

Bobby Sands, a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, leads a hunger strike while in prison.

The movie isn’t really interested in telling you anything. The dialog is kept to a bare minimum. A good portion of it appears in one scene (one amazing scene between Sands and a priest). It is far more interested in showing you something, specifically the ugliest side of prison life. Being set in a confined space allows director Steven McQueen a large amount of control, and he uses it to show chaos of piss and shit and food stuff. The horrors of prison life show on both sides of the fence. The prisoners attempt to hold on to their identities by shunning prison clothes and authority. The authority on the other hand is stuck looking over their shoulder when outside the prison and forced into aggressive behavior by uncooperative inmates on the inside. There is an attempt to be morally ambiguous. The political values of the Provos are not really introduced or challenged; the main protagonist, Bobby Sands, does not even show up for almost half the movie. Unfortunately, the underlying stigma of the IRA hangs over the movie’s empathy.

Bobby Sands is played by Michael Fassbender. Fassbender gives an awesomely complex and daunting performance. He is exactly the way one would think of a rebellion leader. He has a fiery passion that blazes behind a steely resolve. He is emotionally explosive who speaks from the heart that he wears on his sleeve. He believes in his movement and believes even more in his mode of protest. He depicts much of this without speaking. His physically daunting transformation speaks for itself. Fassbender dropped a lot of weight. Maybe not Machinist-Bale transformation, but damn close.

Regardless of its integrity, it is also a daunting watch. The overall speechlessness is obnoxious and does not hit the right chords until the focus shifts to Fassbender as opposed to his fellow inmates. They are mostly empty of any meaning or depth, and they are exactly what they are meant to be, visually disgusting and full of desperation. It is unfortunate because McQueen’s overall style is defined by his desire to stay with silent and lonely parts between the exciting moments that most directors focus on. This seems overcritical, but he also tends to lean on indie film gimmicks. For instance, in the beginning, when we are following one of the prison guards, he cherry picks the potent images and doesn’t show us how they connect until later. It adds nothing to the movie but runtime.

McQueen and Fassbender separately are exciting newcomers to cinema, and their combined effort proves memorable. McQueen’s visual style may be uninspiring, but his ability to tell a story and capture genuine human emotion transcends that flaw.

NOIRvember: Terriers Episode 3

Vlcsnap-2011-11-20-13h26m01s123

The noir sub-genre for all of its simplicity is also filled with lots of complexity. No case is ever as easy as you think it is. On this case, in order for Hank to get his home loan, he must do a job for the bank loan officer. Hank needs to find irrefutable proof that the loan officer's wife, Miriam, is cheating on him. So Hank and Brit go to work and find nothing. That isn't good enough for the loan officer, he knows his wife is having an affair. Hank and Brit try again, but maybe stay a little to close to her as they follow. She catches them and ends up spilling the beans.

She is not actually having an affair. Her husband simply as a masochistic fetish for being a cuckold. In other words, he gets off on his wife being with another man. She understands it, but doesn't want to go through with it, so she lies to him. Now, she feels like she might be in trouble with him for (in Hank's words) "deceiving him about deceiving him." The two strike a deal that they will set up the scene that Miriam and Brit are having an affair that way Miriam saves her marriage and Hank gets his loan.

Under almost any other circumstances this would be the dumbest idea ever. Something you are bound to see on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but Hank is a desperate man and Miriam doesn't seem all that sane either. Cast by the always awesome but severely underused Olivia Williams. She is a former psychiatrist who has fallen for one of her patients and sells it with such sincerity that you never really second guess the stupidity beyond the bigger picture.

All the while, Brit's old partner, Ray, is back in town. After robbing a bar, that includes Brit, he goes to Brit's home and surprises his girlfriend, Katie. Ray wants Brit to help him do a job, but Brit has made promises to both Katie and Hank to not do that sort of thing anymore. But Ray has some serious shit on Brit. The last house Brit robbed was Katie's. He saw her pictures and thought she was cute. He found her paystubs and visited the bar where she worked. It obviously went well as the two are now living together and seemingly happy together. Brit is scared of letting that rip it all down. Brit and Hank basically set up Ray so that he goes down for the bar robbery from earlier in the movie.

This is "TV 101" at its best. It is a great example of two separate plots mirroring each other. Even though Brit got rid of Ray, he told Katie anyway. And thank god he did. It is one of those times where you just want the character to come clean so that it is not always floating for his head, especially since he obviously cares for this girl. It is first met with dismay, but actress Laura Allen spins it with some very funny dialog when she asks Brit to go outside, wait for her to undress, and than pretend to break into the house. The truth does not end up well for Hank though. One thing leads to another and Miriam ends up really cheating on her husband this time, but with Hank. Later, she comes clean that everything had been a set up, and Hank's loan is cancelled. Hank, being a desperate man in a desperate situation, decides to take some very interesting actions. He first reinforces the contract that if he could prove infidelity he would get his home loan. He than sticks his fingers under the loan officer's nose and says he had sex with his wife dropping details one could only know from having sex with her. The officer signs the papers, but he forgot a page. Hank returns to his office to find a note that reads "I only intended to hurt myself" and screaming from outside. The loan officer had jumped to his death, and Hank traces his signature from his suicide note onto the last page.

While Hank is obviously feeling guilty, it is a hard place for a likable character to come back from. Certainly the loan officer wasn't the best guy, but he certainly didn't deserve to die. There is a level to Terriers that is not unlike the sitcom, My Name is Earl. Our two heroes are trying to make up for their past transgressions. What makes it so great is that they don't always succeed. There is a balance panning out. With every misdeed, a misfortune. Every good deed, a reward. But too far in either direction, and the universe gives these characters a harsh reminder of their role in it.

NOIRvember: Terriers Episode 2

Vlcsnap-2011-11-09-22h15m55s47

This episode starts fairly soon after the next one ends. The consequences of the first episode still boiling over. Hank and Brit are separated and questioned about their involvement in the arrest of real estate mogul, Robert Lindus. As part of their questioning, the check he wrote to them for their services in getting back incriminating evidence is taken as evidence. This is the noir world's way of keeping down Hank and Brit.

They need money, especially Hank who has a house to pay for. They sneak a peak at a bail jumper and decide to go get the bounty. It is for a rather large man named Montell. They visit his girlfriend and pretend to be mob guys running down her fortune teller business for cash to scare Montell out of hiding. It works since when they return they have their butts whooped by the massive Montell comically being thrown out the window. Yes, Montell is a gigantic man, but given how the two handled themselves pretty damn well in the pilot for some unkempt scuzzballs, I was hoping they would have endured a little more.

After that didn't really work out for them, they sought Denham, Montell's half brother. Hank and Brit stakeout Denha's house just in case Montell gets in touch with him. During the stakeout, they visit three MacGuyver-esque hacker/techies who spout off a bunch of technical mumbo jumbo that I couldn't understand, and I am not quite sure you are supposed. Regardless, they jury rig the cops actual phone tap and redirect it to themselves.

Montell and Denham are having a meet and Hank and Brit follow. Denham ends up shooting Montell grazing his arm when Montell gets physical. Brit and Hank jump in to rescue him without hesitating. Yes, they need the money, it it is seemingly all about the money every step of the way, but that seems like a sketchy reason for these 2 dudes to just run into what could possibly be a shootout for a man they hardly know. There is always that glimmer of hope in their actions that they aren't truly the cynical bastards that everyone has chocked them up to be. They even take Montell home and patch him up.

Montell than spills the beans about what was going on. Denham works for a horse track where he skimmed some money. He needed Montell's help moving it, but he ended up framing him as a patsy hiding all the money for himself. Now Hank and Brit want in. Montell promises them half of it, 10x as much as the bounty, to kill Denham. But Denham makes the same deal.

But like I just said Hank and Brit are not the cynical bastards everyone makes them out to be. They visit Denham at the track and try to run him down for money to let his half brother go. Denham cracks and yells. "You were supposed to kill him." That's when Hank's former partner, Detective Mark Gustafson, reveals himself. Hank was wearing a wire, sent Denham up the river, and got the bigger reward for returning the stolen money. They also went outside the law and helped Montell go on the lam.

Terriers looks to be one of those case of the week cop procedural, but the play with the characters emotions, personalities, and backstory a whole lot more. Hank and Brit pretty much solidify themselves as not-so-cynical private eyes in a cruel world that only they seem willing to traverse with any kind of compassion and healthy distrust of the system.

Of course, the best part of the whole episode is Hank finally getting the house. He walks in to an empty house for the second time. The first time he was still married, rather than buying it from his ex-wife. He relives that memory like it was yesterday. Even though a big smile is plastered on his face, it is obviously a very tragic and sad moment for him. He remembers are dislike of a wall that ruined the flow of the house, one that Hank takes a sledge hammer too effectively voiding the 72-hour Buyer's Remorse clause. Hank is an impulsive man trying to redeem and rebuild the life he had before he drank it all away.

A solid B+ episode if not for the last scene that puts it up into the A- range

NOIRvember: Terriers Episode 1

Terriers-extinct

Terriers is an unfortunately short live FX series that follows the misadventures of private eyes, Hank Dolworth and Brit Pollack.

There are basic elements that make up a film noir. One is a setting that is made up of shadowy elements contrasting against bright lights. Instead, we find ourselves in the sun soaked setting of Ocean Beach, San Diego. Certainly, not a place you would want to go on vacation, but a charming beach town that shows off its grit with a sense of pride. Another very superficial aspect is that smoking is absolutely rampant, yet in Terriers not a whole lot of them seem to be smoking. One character just chews habitually on cigarette holders, a nervous tick that is helping him stay off of them. It is like the sun just rose on a stereotypical noir film, and everyone is trying to grow up a little bit and but their bad habits aside. One of our protagonists is even a reformed alcoholic with literally no signs that he is going to turn back to the bottle, despite the stress that his life is currently putting on him.

One of the biggest characteristics of noir is the overall pessimism that comes with it. The worlds are inherently corrupt. Everyone is a suspect, no should be trusts, and most of them find themselves trapped in situations they never wanted to be a part of in the first place. That is where our hapless detective duo come in. They are a morally ambiguous couple of PIs. Not necessarily bad guys, rather lovable rogues who are good-intentioned. While the world they reside in his inherently corrupt, they are the surprising shining light using the systems own corruption against itself. One makes them different is there overall optimism. Hank and Brit are troubled individuals who seem to be trying to swing the karmic level in the other direction. Hank, a recovering alcoholic, is even seen in a liquor store perusing the hard stuff and even buys a bottle. It certainly tries to trick us into believing he is getting it for himself, but it is actually a gift. Hank isn't willing to give up yet, or possibly ever. Brit and his undying loyalty to Hank keeps him safely by his side.

Donal Logue and Michael Raymond-James (Hank and Brit respectively) sell the show. You might find some flaws, but there chemistry and charisma make up for any shit they could possibly send your way. The inappropriately drop one liners in dark moments, while there back and forth banter between the two is incredibly genuine. It reminds me and my friends. We bust each other's balls pushing the line of obscenity just to make each other crack up. It isn't really about the first joke cracked either, its about the way they feed off each other and continue the rather crude reality that they are selling to each other.

A+

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

51mm51ztacl

The staff of an abandoned police building find themselves under attack by the seemingly numerous hordes of a local gang.

Assault on Precinct 13 is more than capably directed by newbie John Carpenter. It mixes grainy '70s auter style with a classic Western set-up. Hand and hand with the '70s style is a collection of exploitation tropes. The first act slow burn is rather quick streamlined to get to the action quicker. It is seemingly slowed down by the overall creepiness of the gang's car which moves with Jaws-like suspiciously docile. The cast is an archetypical group of horror survivalists with enough charm to make it apologetic. Their simplicity infers the quick action much like the narrative. The claustrophobia is torturing making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. The excessive violence creates a real threat without juvenile gore. It is also very clear who the bad guys are.

The villains are really stand out here. Their creepy outward appearance has a ghoulish presence. They are a hive mind enemy voiceless and in the shadows hiding around every corner. Their nature implies a supernatural essence. Killing one seems helpless when there are hundred more waiting to take his place.

Assault on Precinct 13 is an awesome cheapie that milks every penny. It is an exceedingly effective horror thriller.

Review - Kidnapped

Kidnapped-2010-1

Plot:

Three hooded men break into the new house to rob from the family. While one of them takes the father to empty their bank accounts, two others watch the mother and daughter. The family tries to fight back with violent consequences.

Review:

This movie may be one of the most visceral horror movies I have ever seen. On a completely superficial level, there is a lot of crying and screaming and ugliness. At times it can get annoying, but it is off-putting by design. The repetitiveness of it without answer is what makes it really scary. I think one of our basest fears, one that is sometimes taken for granted in most horror movies, is the feeling that we are helpless and no one will hear us. Even when their screams are answered, it is a fleeting light of hope. Enough to bait them, but not enough to save them. Most of the hostage takers are like cold, instinctual animals. They are very blunt in their violence and harassment leaving very little to the imagination. They are balanced by an effectively creepy leader who hovers over the father.

The camera lens is probably the best character in the whole movie. It moves the hectic involved movements multiplying the visceral nature of the film. But it is when it stops that it becomes brilliant. It boldly captures images that we would normally wince away from. It stays there not being distracted by the noises and action around helping the tension and an uncomfortable feeling build. The best example is when someone is killed, panic strikes the hostages and the takers must control them. You can hear them scream, cry, and stomp their feet around the camera, but the lens is fixed to the rattling legs of the bleeding character. A giant pit in my stomach formed during this very scene.

The movie takes advantage of a split screen style cinematography. From a utility standpoint, it has its advantages, specifically showing us events that are happening simultaneously without having to jump back and forth between our victims. Unfortunately, I found it to be a major misstep and ultimately distracting. The very last use of it may have some artistic merit as the two screen blend to one, but I do not think that proves the rule.

Kidnapped is a visceral watch and is sure to shake your core. There isn't much to jump at, but it is a fantastic portrayal of the evils that men are capable of.

8/10

SPOILER

I think it includes one of the most satisfying pieces of violence retribution as the rape victim penetrates her rapists head with a phallic like object killing him.

Review: Green Lantern: Emerald Knights

1839792-green_lantern_emerald_knights_blu_ray_cover_middle

A spiritual successor to Green Lantern: First Flight, Emrald Knight is an anthology of tales of the corps, The backbone of the story involved the entire Corps standing against Cronos attempt to destroy them using shadow demons. While they wait for action, Hal Jordan tells the tales to new recruit, Arisia.

Nathan Fillion voices Hal Jordan, a fan favorite for the live action version for some time. I was included among them. The reason I liked Fillion so much for the role is he is he brings so much of Hal to all his characters. Mal of Firefly had his bravado and gung ho attitude while Castle has his charisma, being a nice guy who can match wits. Here, he is simply not given a lot to do. Instead of hot headed but good intentioned cop, he feels more like a stuffy professor who cares more about his students than to just lecture at them. There is serious wasted potential in this casting.

The first story involves Rori, the first Green Lantern. The thing is he isn't the first to wear the ring, just the first one to make a construct. He was a homely magistrate spending most of his time taking notes when by accident the ring ended up in his possession instead of one of the many warriors that had congregated for the chance. From then on, it was said that the rings must be able to choose their own bearers. Rori proved that all the fighting technique and experience wasn't enough. Green Lanterns had to be good people who the ability to overcome fear and do what is right. Sometimes that aspect is strongest in the weakest of people, making them not all that weak to begin with. This story reaks of Green Lantern mythos. It is what makes them so great and unique. It finds the best in people and gives it the credit that it deserves. It doesn't care what kind of personality defects or physical limitations you might have, it sees one thing, and one thing only, your bravery.

Another story focuses on Kilowag's training. He is the victim of an overly stern drill instructor, ironic since he is now considered a very stern instructer. Rocker Henry Rollins is a surprising fit for 'Wag. It is no surprise he captures 'Wag's bulldog attitude, but Rollins also captures his teddy bear charm. He proves himself a true team player and hero during their toughest drill where their instructor sends them against some of the harshest elements before being called to emergency duty.

The third story involves Mogo, the strongest Green Lantern of them all. Bulphunga is a nomadic warrior who is obsessed with being the best, so much so that he has tracked down all the best fighters he could find. He eventually catches a scent on Mogo and means to face off against him in mortal combat. This is probably one the funniest of the stories with some bumbling by design voice work from Rowdy Roddy Piper and some slapstick.

The last story is a prelude to Abin Sur's demise. He faces off against Atrocitus, a recently retconned character in the comics who now plays a key role. With a name like Atrocitus he must be a villain, but their are some heavy implications that he wasn't always bad. There is a Shakespearean tragedy to Atrocitcus' character, but he still comes with the brute nature most muscle bound comic characters come with.

The voice cast is top notch. They take to their characters with seemingly no effort. The structure of it almost kills it though. Hal's story telling seems on paper to be a good way of connecting everything, but each story seemed too much like a non-sequitar. Each one left me wanting more, and I wish it was more structured in general. It was the superhero equivalent of a stakeout sharing war stories when I was craving a space opera adventure with the American gunslinger archetype leading the way. In the end, I thought it was just ok!

Review: The Big Bang

Big_bang_poster_image

Ned Cruz, a reluctant private detective, is hired by a large Russian boxer to find his stripper girlfriend he knew only as a prison penpal. The trail starts in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles' sex industry and brings all the way to an eccentric billionaire's science project to try to create the god-particle. All the while, Ned is telling the tale to 3 problematic detectives.

The film boasts a pretty fantastic cast. Delroy Lindo, Thomas Kretschmann, and a particularly awesome William Fichtner star as the problematic detectives who poke and prod Ned Cruz with questions ducking his razor wit. Snoop Dogg makes an appearance as a porn director. James Van Der Beek makes an appearance as a sex-crazed celebrity. There characters aren't all that interesting, but they offer the right amount of comedic relief and temporary chemistry the lead. Autumn Reeser stars as a plucky waitress turned on by quantum physics. and Sam Elliot plays a new age wacko billionaire obsessed with unlocking the secrets of the universe. The kind of energy and passion they inject into the techno-babble invigorate from advanced college lecture to something almost philosophical.

At the head of the cast is Antonio Banderas as private dick, Ned Cruz. He gets his Bogart on as a hard-boiled, liquor soaked hero reluctantly sleep walking through his newest case. His lethargy is base level, as his eyes and narrative speak differently. We watch the events play out accurately, but his telling of the tale to the detectives have some irregularities. Just enough to show he truly cares. He has an acerbic wit that allows him to control the room even when getting socked in the face, but Banderas' accent hurts the fast-talking dialog.

His accent issues are compounded by the speed of the plot which jumps from point to point so suddenly I sometimes had trouble following. They refer to past characters, but I forgot some of their names. We meet them for so little time, it is hard to leave a lasting impression. The science talk can be a little too technical as well flying straight over my head. I found that surprising because while I am not an aficionado at any rate, that kind of science meets philosophy discussions always pique my interest.

The Big Bang is charming piece of junk food cinema. It sets an updated dime store novel story in a modern setting with an interesting color pallet full of pastels. It has a dark defeatist sense of humor and plenty of acerbic wit to keep you entertained. It just unfortunately fails to have a point.
