Good call on the Aviator, the King of Kong and Wonder Boys. All three of them are pretty great and the Aviator doesn't get enough love. I think it's the best film Scorsese made this decade. I'm hoping Shutter Island is as good as the trailer looks... Scorsese doing horror just sounds really intriguing.

What would you say is your #1?

Jules Winnfield: Existentialist Hitman

__bad_mutha_wizard___by_davidmacdowell-600x828

I was going through some old writings and here's a short blurb I wrote that was printed in the Tampa Tribune back in April of 2002 that I thought would be worth revisiting (WARNING SPOILERS FOR PULP FICTION):

Would you describe Pulp Fiction's Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) as having embrassed existentialism at the end of the movie? His interpretation of Ezekiel sounds to be very much from an existentialist's stand-point. Pointing out that he is along in an evil world, and that he has found that his meaning is to go about on his own and no longer hurt, but to help. As a hitman, Jackson was following a course similar to that of predestination -- This may be why the death of Vincent was included. Had Jules not quit working for Marsellus, he too may have been placed inside that apartment where Vincent was killed.

Jules is a man of moral code. He won't eat a dog because it has personality. Yet, while employeed by Marsellus, Jules had no second thoughts about blasting a man with whom he shared stories about hawaiian burgers. It wasn't until Jules broke free from the deity that is his boss (and note that all action in the movie revovles around Marsellus), that he was able to be true to himself. His actions are very much that of an existentialist.

Finally, this brings up what is in the briefcase -- The object which Jules has worked towards -- No one knows what it is. Just as no one can "see" God, no one can see what is in the briefcase. Jules does not beleive that his life should be determined over something which we do not have a full understanding of.

I think it's funny that as a teenager I was seeing Lost in Yonkers and Howard's End, and as an adult, Percy Jackson and How to Train Your Dragon.

George Lucas to release CGI-altered American Graffiti Limited Edition

George Lucas announced today, the release of an American Graffiti limited edition DVD that will not only include digital enhancements, but will alter many parts of the film. At the Wichita Rollers Ball, Lucas told the crowd of mostly elderly attendees, "When I first made American Graffiti, there were a lot of things working against me, namely rewrites forced by the studio. Now with the current advancements in CGI, I can go back and essentially make the film I wanted to make."

Among the changes Lucas has made, includes a plot change in which all the teenagers are back at home by dark, and also flying cars. "Well, basically any recollection of the American Graffiti as you know it will be long gone." Yelled Lucas when questioned by an angry fan, "You think that you wrote American Graffiti! You're wrong, and I could give a shit less about anything else. I'm rich, bitch!"

George Lucas reminded the crowd to remember to pick up his next release of Star Wars, due out before the holidays.

Texas Theater Moves Toward Fullscreen Format

Texas Theater Moves Toward Fullscreen Format
(story below)

click for low home loans

Fort Worth, TX, 10:48am

In response to rising pressure from local residents, Fort Worth's Gunshot Theater will make the move to only show its feature films in what is now commonly known as "fullscreen format".

The move was made amidst hundreds of angry letters, an online petition, and finally a full boycott of the theater.

"This is good," says local resident Charlie 'Red' Baker, "I don't see why they need to stretch the films out like that. All the classics were perfectly square images, and anything more is nonsense. If I wanted to move my head back and forth trying to pay attention, I'd go watch tennis."

Others, however, see things differently. At the internet talkback site AICN.com, user DustyHoffballs states, "TH1Z Iz BU77541T!!! WS PWNS FS!!!!"

Meanwhile, theater owner Holly Martins plans to go through with the transition starting July 18th with the premiere of Warner Brothers' The Dark Knight.

AFI needs "Vegas, baby!" on their Top 100

Look, I know we all disagree with movies being left off of lists and personally to me the only real importance of lists is to go, "Oh, so that's what they think." Either way, AFI is a film institute. So, I don't know what that means, but it sounds pretty important. That's why I'm pointing out that "Vegas, baby!" is probably one of the most appreciated quotes of at least since no one knew Vince Vaughn was really like his character Trent.

Now I don't think the quote should be there because I think it is all that good, don't make me out to be like that, no. In fact, although I like it, everytime I hear someone use it, I want to kick them in the face. But not just anyway, kind of like this:

But you know what, as I say that I realize it should be something more like this:

You know not actually physically attack them, that'd be wrong. That stance would work out well just sort of gyrate that stance in a loop like a video game character. Do that until they ask what you are doing and then tell them to think about what they just said.

My point is that this quote is so often used. I'm not talking about like when people shout "Yeah, baby!" after seeing Austin Powers or say stuff from Napoleon Dynamite. No, I mean people really mean it. They go to Vegas, and say "Vegas, baby!" This is not a quote. The movie coined a phrase, or at least engraved it into the psyche of our culture. Whoa! That's a bit much for a late 90s hipster film, but that's what happened. And hell, I don't mind that I think the movie, however, you'd describe it is one of the best of the 90s. Of course if I think longer I'd probably find it's low on my list of them, but either way, "Vegas, baby!"

So AFI, the next time they update their list and change stuff around they need to remember the fact that this annoying little way that people shove they are going to go to Vegas in your face, they need to remember that it more-or-less started as a movie quote. I've seen shows from Friends to Steve Harvey throw it out there, and it seems to be used even more than Vegas real catch phrase - what the hell is that? Vegas: Legal Prostitution in outlaying cities!?
