So I saw it over the weekend. Looking back it reads like I hated the film and honestly I didn't. I was disappointed. I can't lie about that.
What I loved (LOVED) was everything set in the future. The look, the action, the pace, the suspense. The film starts with a massive bang. Hooks you right away.
The issues for me set in once the film shifted to the 70's. It was like someone hit the breaks. The film just came to a stand still. The stakes are right there. They have to prevent the future but no one seems bothered. haha. It felt like the film was just moving from one scene to the next with no real rhythm. The climax was weak. The 70's set section anyway. It just ended so abruptly.
Other stuff that didn't gel with me were the characters. Mystique is awesome but I feel like they're getting lazy with her now. We see her used in situations we've seen in films gone by. Nothing new. Same with Magneto. Most of his stuff felt like call backs to X2. They got rid off his boss theme music too. Wolverine. He's just there. Along for the ride. Beast seems lost. Don't get me wrong acting wise everyone was great but there was just nothing that gripped me in those scenes. Also, Blink, Sunspot, Warpath and Bishop. I know. The cast was massive but would it have killed Singer to throw in some interaction between them, some dialogue exchanges that gave a hint to their personalities beyond the most bland "Look out!" action movie dialogue ever? Poor Havoc, he's not even referred to by name in his short scenes hahah it's like "Oh it's only one of the guys from First Class, no one cares about him!"
On the flip side I appreciated the two plights the movie set up. The larger scale of preventing a horrendous future and the low scale saving of a young woman's soul with Mystique. The new characters in the future are used great and their powers are boss. The Sentinels looked amazin and those cameos at the end were not only great but warranted. Also Quicksilver. Great new character.
So no...I didn't hate it. I'm still beyond excited for Apocalypse but maybe next time flesh folk out a little more....and move Wolverine, Mystique, Professor X and Magneto to the side. Give 'em time to breath. Let us miss them. There's a MASSIVE cast of characters the films have to this date hardly touched upon. Let some of the other mutants step up and be the focus for a change.
