Zombieland: 3 out of 4 stars

Zombieland is the most senseless fun I’ve had at the movies in a while. In a world full of great art films as well as lame bloated blockbusters, there is something to be said for the horror-comedy genre. You don’t have to think. All you have to do is sit back enjoy, get grossed out a little bit, and laugh.
In Zombieland we follow Columbus (Jessie Eisenberg) in a post zombie infested world. A “mad-human” disease has infected the majority of our population and he is one of the few roaming humans not infected. In Zombieland the name of the game is survival and Columbus has a list of rules he lives by in order to make it through the day without getting eaten alive by the undead. He crosses paths with another survivor Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) who lives by one rule…nut up or shut up.
They set off across the country to finally head to their respective hometowns killing or stopping Zombies along the way. Eisenberg’s well played nerd butting heads with Harrelson’s psycho zombie killer makes for some great comedic dialogue. Tallahassee’s unique methods of murdering the mush-brained ghouls and affinity for Twinkies get you giggling too. The movie never takes itself too seriously and that’s why it works so well. Eventually they run into two sisters, Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). This ends up being a love/hate relationship due to the fact that the girls can’t seem to make up their mind whether or not they want to steal the guys’ weapons and vehicle or keep them around and trek across Zombieland together.
Their road trip finally ends up taking them to Los Angeles to an amusement park, which of course is conveniently a great backdrop for a horror comedy showdown. They also stay at a certain celebrity’s abandoned mansion for a night while they are there as well. I’m not going to give it away, but it ends up being one of the funniest cameos in ages and gets the biggest laughs of the film.
Zombieland is a hell of a good time. It is up there with 2004’s Shaun of the Dead, yet not quite as good. It’s definitely a great ride. If you’re having a tough time at work, your significant other has just dumped you, or you just need to escape for 1 hour and 21 minutes, then I suggest you take in Zombieland at once. A little zombie comedy entertainment never hurt anybody. The only effort it requires is for you to buy the ticket.
