TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY should win the award for "Most Confusing Film of the Year." That's not to say it's a convoluted mess. It's not. I merely found it perplexing, and I'm ashamed to admit that it lost me at times. The last film to make me feel like an idiot was Stephen Gaghan's SYRIANA, if anyone remembers that film. With that said, TTSS is an engrossing, occasionally suspenseful mystery, featuring a great ensemble cast, which is anchored by a restrained, yet commanding performance by Gary Oldman. I have never seen Oldman this quiet or reserved. A strong performance worthy of the Oscar nomination he received. I do plan on seeing TTSS again, if only to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, so to speak.
I forgot some people's names so when they were talking about people I wasn't sure who they were talking about.
Tinker Tailor made sense to me up until when the mole is revealed. It's just like "oh, hey, here I am!" the rest of the movie... you just have to be paying a ridiculous amount of attention. And even then, it still provoked a ton of discussion between my father and I once we left the theater.
So...I was supposed to be stuck at school for the whole day, but my professors didn't show up to my classes. As a result, I have the rest of the day off! I'm going to catch a matinee showing of TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY right now, then I'll probably see another film tonight. No way I'm going to let this day go to waste. Woohoo!!!
Oscar Nominations: I"m very happy about a few things, including 3 nominations for THE TREE OF LIFE, Rooney Mara scoring a Best Actress nomination for GDT, Nick Nolte receiving a Best Supporting Actor nomination for WARRIOR, and Melissa McCarthy getting a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Best Supporting Actress. Speaking of the Supp. Actress category, I think Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer are going to cancel each other, leaving Berenice Bejo to win the award for THE ARTIST. I'm very surprised Gary Oldman and Demian Bichir both received Best Actor nominations. As for what pissed me off: DRIVE being virtually snubbed (with exception of Sound Editing), THE IDES OF MARCH being snubbed, Ryan Gosling not receiving a Best Actor nomination, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross not getting a nomination for Best Original Score for their GDT score, and only two fucking nominations in the Best Original Song category.
The Best Original Song category really pisses me the fuck off. What about Chris Cornell's song for MACHINE GUN PREACHER, The National's for WARRIOR, and Sinead O'Connor's for ALBERT NOBBS?!?! Fucking load of horseshit!
Octavia Spencer is gonna win the Best Supporting Actress award. I guarantee it ;)
Watched UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING over the weekend. I found it quite disappointing and underwhelming. Although it was nice to see Kate Beckinsale reprise Selene, I fail to understand why she would agree to appear in this film, with exception of a paycheck. AWAKENING is boring, repetitive, hollow, and ultimately pointless. (And for the sake of continuity, why the fuck isn't Scott Speedman in this film?! I can't blame him for not wanting to return to the franchise, though.) What I hated most about AWAKENING is that it feels and plays out like one of those horrendous straight-to-DVD sequels. This is easily the worst installment in the series. Say what you will about the prequel RISE OF THE LYCANS, but at least it features some delightfully entertaining over-the-top performances by Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy.
Watched the RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION teaser trailer. I thought it was a fucking commercial for Sony products at first. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to see Michelle Rodriguez. Didn't she die in the first film? Whatever. She's returning to the RE franchise, as well as the FAST & FURIOUS series. You know what this means? You can't kill her characters off for good because she's too fucking bad-ass! Haha! :D
that Sony commercial thing is pretty neat in retrospect, as long as you go into it not expecting to see a Resident Evil trailer. Good trailer making job
Ya can't top that RE: APOCALYPSE teaser. If only the movie could've been just as good...
Looks like it's not flashback scenes after all, as I had expected. I can see her coming back, since that's what the T-Virus does is reanimate dead cells. But I don't see how that other dude can come back, being that he was sliced into like a thousand pieces.
If THE EXPENDABLES 2 really is a PG-13, I'm boycotting it. It wouldn't be the first time that I refused to pay to see a PG-13 film that should've been rated R.
I follow the same plan. If enough boycott, Hollywood gets a message in a language that it understands.
@ Weapon X: Dude, that cover art is fucking amazing! They should be using your cover art instead.
"Ricky Gervais Packs Less Punch at Golden Globes." That's how PEOPLE summed up Gervais' hosting duties at the Golden Globes last night. I agree that Gervais was toned down and more tame in comparison to last year's show, but I still thought he was funny and hilarious at times. I loved his stabs at Johnny Depp, Jodie Foster, Colin Firth, Elton John, etc. Could he have thrown some bigger punches at the Hollywood Elite last night? Yes, without question. But was he still funny last night? Yes, I certainly thought so.
Who's watching the series premiere of ALCATRAZ tonight? I think it looks like a trippy good time. And it stars Sam Neill! I'm looking forward to it!
Just found out that HBO is finally releasing Season 1 of BOARDWALK EMPIRE on Blu-Ray/DVD next week. It's about fucking time, HBO!!!
now if only they'd get around to releasing the freakin SOPRANOS on blu... what the hell?!
^ oh stop being so bitter =P it'll be cool this way I think, it's basically a big movie from Season 1 to the end of Season 2, and now a new movie will be made from Season 3 to where ever this new chapter ends... have some hope man! ;)
PROMETHEUS has a great cast: Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Patrick Wilson (according to IMDB), Mark Strong (He's not listed on IMDB, but he is in the film, correct?), and Charlize Theron. By the way: The teaser trailer is fucking awesome! FOX and Ridley Scott can say whatever they want, but the trailer screams ALIEN. I'm not buying for a second that PROMETHEUS is not a prequel to ALIEN in some way, or at least part of the same universe. Prequel or no prequel, I cannot wait until next June!
Uh, if anyone is making an effort to hide the fact that it's an ALIEN prequel.......they're doing a pretty shitty job. (lol)
Only a complete noob, who'd never seen any of the other movies and is completely oblivious to the franchise, would not know what it actually is. And I'm willing ot bet there'll be people going into it who still won't.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is one of David Fincher's best films. As much as I like the original 2009 Swedish film, which is a solid adaptation of Stieg Larsson's international best-selling novel, Fincher's adaptation is superior for a number of reasons: (1) Unlike Niels Arden Oplev, who directed the original Swedish film, Fincher is an auteur filmmaker with a distinctive visual style. Visually speaking, there's nothing particularly interesting or remarkable about Oplev's version. Fincher, on the other hand, submerges the viewer into the cold, bleak, sinister Swedish winter landscape, a stylistically dark setting that enhances the equally dark narrative; (2) The characters, especially the titular protagonist and heroine brilliantly played by Rooney Mara, are more complex and fascinating; (3) Despite the fact that both adaptations feature nearly exact running lengths, the original Swedish film was plagued by a convoluted script and a languid pace. In Fincher's adaptation, scriptwriter Steven Zaillian has crafted an intricate, yet comprehensible (if the viewer is paying absolute attention, of course) script that provides the film with a smoother narrative and a tighter pace; (4) As for the performances, Fincher's adaptation edges out the original Swedish film due to a great supporting cast and Mara’s exceptional, fearless, Oscar-worthy performance as Lisbeth Salander. Noomi Rapace played the character in the original film, and although she was terrific, it was difficult to look beyond the rebellious, bad-ass goth-punk exterior and sympathize with her version of...[more]...
David Fincher's THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO was fucking awesome! As much as I like the original 2009 Swedish film, I think Fincher's adaptation is superior. (I'll post a review explaining why I think the remake is better than the original.) Rooney Mara was absolutely fantastic! I'm looking forward to seeing it again very soon. On another note: I'm back!!! :D
Fincher's is definitely superior. The Swedish version left so much stuff out that Fincher's version was able to squeeze in in a line or two of dialogue. Brilliance.

I hated Syriana so much, I did not and still donT understand one damn thing about the plot. DAMN YOU CLOONEY!!!!
