it couldn't be live action because it's a cartoon, a comic book, and they're really following through with that as you can see with the character models and universe -- things that just couldn't be done/would look horrible with live action

Bigger buildings used to have them, but I'm sure that they're obsolete because of mankind's ability to fuck up.
If anything you'd only now see those in bigger buildings, and not in the main hallways but in the stairwells (people don't use those and anyone that worked there would know where to get it if needed).
