MFC 2.2: New additions, bells, whistles and more!

1mfc-logo-clock1

Hey folks! We've just launched our latest version of Movie Fan Central (MFC 2.2), which adds a bunch of cool new features to our little online movie community (56,000 members+). So not only can you make movie friends, write your own reviews, post blogs, images and videos to your profile, upload your DVD/Blu-Ray collection and include your top 10 lists (all free, of course), here are some of the latest additions...

1) WALL COMMENTS: Not only can you comment on other people's updates, but you can now post directly on their "wall", just like Facebook.

2) EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS: You now have the capacity to receive email notifications for any updates regarding your profile. If you want to know when you've received a "friend request", you can make that happen. If you want to know when someone has commented on your wall or replied to your comment or anything else...you can now make that happen via your "Account Settings" section.

3) TOP 100 BADGES: "Badges, we don't need no stinkin' badges!" Sure you do! In order to keep track of our most active schmoes, we've created top 100 lists for each section of the MFC, including the top 100 commenters, top 100 DVD collections, top 100 reviews, etc... If you make the top 100 in any category, you will receive a badge at the top of your profile and a handjob (sans handjob).

4) BECOME A FAN! This is one of my favorite new features! By the click of a button, you can now "become a fan" of any of the 250 HOTTIES listed in our MovieHotties.com galleries, as well as any of the 7,000 MOVIES listed in our JoBlo.com movie database. All you have to do is click on the "become a fan" button on those pages and voila...you're a fan! We'll be adding more such functionalities across the entire JoBlo Movie Network over time...

5) MORE MOVIE THEMES (SKINS): We love 'em, you love 'em so get ready for at least 10 new movie themes to "skin" your profile. We currently have 13 themes already in place including PULP FICTION, THE DARK KNIGHT, FIGHT CLUB and others, but get ready for your LORD OF THE RINGS, STAR WARS, KILL BILL and many others to come. We'll be adding 2/week for the next few weeks. For the launch, we've added THE BIG LEBOWSKI and ALIENS!

6) WHO ELSE IS LIKE ME? You now have the ability to see how among the rest of our 56,000 members owns the same DVDs/Blu-Rays as you (click on the title of the DVD in your collection), and who else has the same "favorites" as you do on your top 10/community lists (click on the hyperlinked movie titles on your lists).

7) EMAIL/PM FOLDERS: Our MFC email/private messaging system has also been updated, so that you can now save/forward emails, as well as create folders in which to save them.

8) CHAT/GAMES: That's right, as if discussing all things related to movies in our forums wasn't enough, or all of the "Strike Back" sections across all of the sites in our network, we now have a full-blown CHAT section which will allow you to get into major chat sessions with a bunch of other schmoes or go private 1:1 with a particular schmoe that you want. It's free, it's cool and it's stoner-friendly! PS: The chat program also includes over 100 flash games you can play while on the MFC...

9) FRIENDS UPDATES CUSTOMIZATION: Right now, as soon as you're a friend with someone else, you will see all of their updates on your HOME page, but with MFC 2.2., you now have the ability to restrict what updates you want to see from your friends (if any).

10) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! If you check into your account on the date of your birth, you will receive one of 8 randomly selected "Birthday messages" on your profile page (males/females receive different salutes). Below is one of the randomly chosen male birthday wishes.

Other smaller additions include the ability...

- to listen to our latest podcasts while surfing the MFC
- to choose which poster you want to use for your movie reviews
- to see the average score from all schmoes on reviews
- to add RSS feeds from other sites to your profile
- to keep track of the # of comments you have throughout the JoBlo Movie Network including Strike Backs, forums and the MFC
- next/previous links below all images
- rolling figures on all portal page items
- to "remember" your LOG-IN
- to update your password

Phew, I think that's about it, folks.

Let me know if you have any questions, etc... that are NOT in our FAQ section (click button at the top of the MFC). Thanks!

My review of the Oscars (1994)!!

Tarantino-avary

I was going through a really really old box of "diskettes" (remember those things?) and found in it a treasure-trove of old letters, images and crap I was writing during my graduate days back in 1994-1996. I wrote this little ditty (pre-JoBlo.com, of course) on the night in March of 1995, about the Academy Awards show that I had apparently just watched. I was so green... ;)

I just saw the Oscars, and I must say that it was one of the most exciting Oscars ever !!

Can you believe that Pulp Fiction actually won Best Picture ??? Was it just me, or did Tarantino kiss Roger Avary right on the lips when he won ?? What was that all about. Anyway, it was kind of cool how he thanked everybody from his old video store for helping him "Get a life !!!", as he put it. Also, he seemed to kind of choke up when he spoke of his desire to be the best he could be, so that he could show his father (who he hasn't seen since his childhood) that he was worth something. I almost cried.

No surpises for best actor: Tom Hanks. Thank God he didn't go on and on about the people in the Heavens and stuff like last year. But he was funny, as usual. I didn't think Winona Ryder deserved the best actress award, she seems like she is always playing that same young, goodlooking, vulnerable, nice girl in her movies. I don't see her acting very differently in any of her movies. Anyways, it was nice of her to mention Johnny Depp in her acceptance speech.

The best moment of the show was when the best supporting actor award was called out by Brad Pitt, and he named "Martin Landau" (of course). With the camera on all of the other nominees, we could actually see Sam Jackson cursing when he heard the name called. He then proceeded to walk off the show with his wife in tow. That was hilarious !!! It was funny the way Landau kept saying, "Sam, come back, Sam, oh SAM !!!".

I had the gun placed to my head when they named best supporting actress, just waiting for them to announce Jennifer Tilly's name, after which I would have proceeded to pull the trigger and leave this cruel planet we call Earth. Luckily her name wasn't called, and instead it was that English woman, Helen Mirrem (sp?).

Anyway, I thought Letterman was great, especially that song and dance routine he performed with Madonna, but I didn't expect him to do that crazy thing at the top of the show. That was completely un-Dave-like. Overall, this year's Oscars were a success. Despite a few political statements made by some, describing the tales of Sarajevo and the Peace in the Middle East (we viewers don't like to be reminded of the reality of our world while we're off in our fantasy show), it was really great. Any show that can make Clint Eastwood CRY when receiving his Irving Thalberg award, is okay in my book.

Until next year, make mine Oscar.

PS: The best director award was a token to Zemeckis for not having chosen Gump as best picture (you could see the disappointment in his face)

I'm confused. Forrest Gump did win Best Picture, Winona didn't win Best Actress.

Good read though, the Sam Jackson thing was indeed hilarious.

Holy shit, you're right!! That's a little bizarre actually. I KNOW that I was taking 'creative writing' courses back then, so maybe that's what I was doing... odd stuff. Another thing I found is a letter in which I say that I want to "own my own company one day and travel the world". Well at least that worked out!

Jonathan Frey
Jonathan Frey at 04:39 PM Jan 24

Haha, that's funny :) I figured it was a creative writing piece. It has that creative-writing assignment sorta vibe, what with you taking a real-life event that's based heavily on chance and tweaking and altering how it went down (imagining how it could've very well went down). I actually thought you were referencing its departure from reality in your intro when you said it was about "the Academy Awards show that I had apparently just watched"...i.e. "the show only *I* saw." :)

JoBlo's Top 50 coolest movies!

Joblo-book

Hey all!

Since we just launched our cool new movie community, I figured that one way to start shit up would be for me to post all 50 of my reviews from my 2002 book entitled JOBLO.COM PRESENTS...THE 50 COOLEST MOVIES OF ALL-TIME for the few people who didn't purchase the book yet... ;) (I'm kidding, of course) Even though the book is technically still available, it's a little out of date, so I figured I might as well share the reviews with all of my MFC friends, yo!!

Not sure if I'll be able to add one every day, but I'll do my best. I'm also gonna include the LITTLE KNOWN FACTS which I'd included below each review, as well as the COOLEST THING ABOUT THIS MOVIE section.

Please post YOUR OWN COMMENTS below my reviews, if you feel like it... ;)

Remember that these movies were chosen in 2001, so it's basically the "coolest movies" from 1970 to 2000 or so....not really "of all-time", so don't bust my nuts over that shite... ;)

Click on my REVIEWS section for the show to begin...

What's Stallone thinking?

Rambo5-poster

According to AICN (and they should know, since Stallone and the owner of said site apparently are best buddies!), the poster in this message is the one that the people behind RAMBO 5 will be using to publicize the film at the Toronto Film Festival this coming week (btw, we'll be covering the festival on joblo, so stay tuned).

Now is it me or does that look like a REALLY LAME poster that my little sister could have create with her Paint program or something?? (and I don't even have a little sister)

I dig what Stallone did with ROCKY BALBOA and RAMBO, but someone needs to set the main straight about this next installment, methinks, especially since I'm hearing that he wants to go the PG-13 route the next time around.

Brrrrrrrrr.....

That looks like the EXACT same image of Stallone on the Blu Ray for RAMBO. I'm calling bullshit on this one... I desperately hope I'm right.

I hope is as fun as Rambo 4

It'd have to be the exact same image of Rambo from the dvd cover because filming hasn't begun yet - right?
I was hoping we'd see Rambo back in the states for a while, meet his Dad and what-not. The end shot when he's waking up his family drive I thought it'd be great to see some of his home life.
Looks like he's going to Mexico now, correct?

Movie Fan Central is live!

Mfc_logo

Hey everyone!

So we've officially "transferred" our MYJOBLO community to our new community site called MOVIE FAN CENTRAL.

All of your info/profiles have been moved to this new community site, so hopefully you can jump right into your account and start community-ing... ;)

Ideally, we'd ask everyone to click on INFO first, then fill out the BASIC INFO about yourself (age, location, sex, etc...)

Then, we'd love if everyone could upload a DEFAULT IMAGE for their account. To do so, go to the QUICK POST section at the top of your profile page, click on IMAGE, then upload an image and set it to DEFAULT.

In fact, the QUICK POST section is basically where you can UPDATE your entire profile. You can update your STATUS UPDATE from there, write a blog, review, upload images/videos, post your top 10 lists or fill out the community lists, or upload your DVD collection.

On the top-right handside of the MFC, you will see THEMES and ACCOUNT SETTINGS. You can change the "look" of your profile via the THEMES section (we'll be adding more movie themes later) and choose which FRIENDS' updates you want to see on your HOME page via the ACCOUNT SETTINGS section.

For the coming week or so (August 17-24), we're still in BETA MODE, so there might still be some errors here and there, and some stuff missing. If you run into any BUGS/ISSUES, please email them to us at mfc@joblo.com (please explain the issue in detail).

Thanks!

The Deaden premiere...in Montreal!

Tonight was the premiere screening of DEADEN, the film that our very own Arrow wrote, co-produced and stars in, here in Montreal, and everything went really well....

This was the first time that I had seen the film on the big screen, and you know what, it was actually pretty damn good! I say it in that way because it's to note that the film was filmed in 13 days and on a very low budget and considering all that...honestly, I thought it was entertaining as hell (lots of Arrow humor and dialogue, excellent directing, lots of violence, tits, ass (and I mean the Arrow's!!), etc...)

Of course, I'm BIASED as shit since I also executive produced the film and have a dinky cameo in it, but I thought I'd toss my two-bit opinion out there anyway.

BTW, it was a cast/crew/family screening, so pretty much everybody there was biased, but still... :)

That said, one girlfriend of a buddy of mine told us STRAIGHT UP afterwards that she didn't care for it-- I wonder if it was the opening rape/kill scene in which the abortion is pulled from the woman's womb or when that dude's nuts got chomped by a dog... ;)

Like I said...not for everybody, but my sister liked it and so did most everyone else at the bar afterwards. Anyway, I didn't think I'd use this blog for anything, but there you go...an "event" that is worthy of a personal blog, but certainly not worth slapping on the site.

Day #1: The Launch!

Well, after months and months of development and hard work, MyJoBlo.com is now officially launched, although we obviously need to work on it a little more, in terms of BUGS and shit, but for the most part, it should be ready to go.

Hope you all dig.
