GIVE MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION IT'S OWN AWFULLY GOOD!!!

A friend of mine and I were talking action stars. He told me his favorite was the one and only Jean-Claude Van Damme. I told him mine was Chuck Norris (what?). He brought how HARD TARGET was always his favorite Van Damme movie. But then he says, "I'm sure if I watched it nowadays I'd be like, 'This is fuckin' stupid.'"

I couldn't agree with such a statement more than just now, when I got done watching MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION on the FX channel (anybody else exctied for "Justified"?). When I was a kid, I absolutely adored Mortal Kombat. So seeing the movies was a real big thing for me. I thought they were both among the greatest flicks ever made...but then I grew up and realized how downright ridiculous ANNIHILATION truly is.

I know, I know, you can make the argument that the first one was the same, but hey, tell me that you weren't entertained and had a fun time with it. I mean, sure it was kinda cheesy but it still had the look and feel of a solid action flick.

ANNIHILATION just looks and feels like a bad soap opera ("Because Shao Kahn is my brother") mixed with a Disney Channel original movie. It's got horrible dialouge, horrible acting and just plain awful fight scenes.

So that's why I think MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION deserves it's own glorious spot in the Awfully Good section. Hell, you could even put it in it's own category of How to not make a video game adaptation. I get the feeling Uwe Boll thought it was brilliant though. It's got hilarious one-liners, CGI that cost about a nickel to do, and lots of cheese.

I love James Remar by the way seeing as how THE WARRIORS is an all time favorite of mine and my Mom dug him on "Sex & The City" as one of Samantha's boyfriends, but he's got nothing on Christopher Lambert. I get the feeling Lambert backed out of this flick since he didn't have any luck with another sequel that shall remain nameless.

Give MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION it's own Awfully Good. It's Awfully Worthy

Summer Movies anyone?

You know, I was just thinking about COOL HAND LUKE the other day. And what an inspiration it was for me, and how awesome Paul Newman (my all time favorite actor) was in it. I remember I first watched it about two or three years ago when my parents left me at the house alone for a week during the summer. It was like mid-July I think. And before they left, they brought me to the nearest Blockbuster and I rented a couple of flicks. I remember one of them was AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (which I absolutely adore to this day), and the other was COOL HAND LUKE.

So I was sitting alone in my room, watching this great, all-American classic flick that was COOL HAND LUKE. The mood seemed perfect for it. The weather outside was my all time favorite kind of weather. A summer breeze, with clouds covering the sky to the point where it looks like that there might be a slight chance of rain, but there probably won't be. I was mesmerized by COOL HAND LUKE with Newman bringing me to tears and smiles.

So when I was thinking about COOL HAND LUKE the other day, I thought to myself, "Man, that's a great summer flick." But aren't summer flicks always supposed to be like huge-ass Blockbusters that make millions of dollars????

No. Not necessarily. See, in my book, the mood of summer is relaxed and an all around good time. And COOL HAND LUKE fit perfectly in that format for me. So I ask you, my fellow film lovers, what would you guys feel hit this note perfectly. A flick that was fun, and felt like it was made to be viewed during summer? Any thoughts or recommendations?

While you think of some, I'm gonna go eat fifty hard boiled eggs in one hour. Please share your opinions. Much appreciated.

Just a short little blog

A movie theatre up in Minneapolis, about 40 some minutes away from my place is playing THIRST, directed by the dude that did the fuckin' masterpiece that is OLDBOY. I first saw the trailer for it last week at the same place, when they were showing ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW at midnight (loved it!). The trailer looked pretty good.

It seems that as of late there's a lot of vampire love stories coming out. Isn't there a show on the CW called "Vampire Diaries"? Is that a vampire love story? Well no matter.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN was one of my favorite movies last year, and the reason why was because in my opinion, the only way to show a vampire onscreen is for what they really are. Vicious fuckin' killers! And the preview for THIRST made it seem exactly like that.

Has anyone here seen it yet? Should I drive all that way to see it?

The theater i project at played Thirst to great business I really, really loved it. It's not as solid as Oldboy, and there are set pieces that could have easily been over the top but it mostly remains a test in subtlety for Park in some places. In other places, it's exactly what you'd expect from the man making a vampire film.

I really enjoyed the theological aspects, it's interesting how the priests lust for his female companion is mirrored with his blood lust to survive. It's a great story about obsession. I really recommend you see it!!

New to this whole thing

Hey, the name's Rob. Some people like to call me Stoss, so whatever's fine.
I've been an avid reader of Joblo, I'm a real big fan.

I'm a real movie lover. I think when I first started to take notice of that, it was sitting my ass down watching THE EVIL DEAD. I was hooked pretty instantly. It was the first movie that I actually looked deep down into. Behind the scenes, DVD commentary. I found myself knowing everything about it. And so forth with the awesome sequels, the hilarious monster fest that is EVIL DEAD 2, and the badass ARMY OF DARKNESS. My first real hero, Ash of course.

Ever since then, movies have been my obsession. I'm sure the rest of you
have a story to tell about when you were first hooked into film. I'm here to listen.
I'm here to talk. I'm here to share.

Now c'mon, let's talk movies.
